This recreation area is designed to provide a respite for the military community, offering a chance to unwind by the lake, enjoy various outdoor activities, and simply relax in a natural setting. Unlike many bustling commercial campgrounds, Maxwell-Gunter AFB Lake Martin Recreation Area maintains a more laid-back, rustic feel, which many find to be a refreshing change of pace. It's a place where the focus is truly on the natural surroundings and the opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones.
Visitors often express "mixed feelings," but a prevailing sentiment is the appreciation for the beautiful Lake Martin and the friendly staff. While some aspects of maintenance and layout might require a bit of adaptability, the core offerings of spacious, wooded sites and direct lake access consistently shine through. For those who understand and embrace the nature of a military campground – often focused more on function and value than luxury – it promises a rewarding and memorable experience in the heart of Alabama's lake country.
If you're part of the military community in Alabama looking for a serene escape with beautiful lake access and a friendly atmosphere, this recreation area warrants consideration. It's a testament to the benefits provided to service members, offering a slice of paradise where you can truly "relax and enjoy," despite minor logistical hurdles.
Maxwell-Gunter AFB Lake Martin Recreation Area is located at 350 Air Force Rd, Dadeville, AL 36853, USA. This location is paramount to its appeal, as it directly borders the beautiful Lake Martin, one of Alabama's largest and most popular recreational lakes. For military personnel and eligible DoD civilians stationed or residing in Alabama, accessing this recreation area is generally straightforward via state and county roads leading to Dadeville.
The campground's direct access to Lake Martin means that the incredible fishing, swimming, and boating opportunities are practically at your doorstep. Reviewers consistently praise the beauty of the lake itself, making it the undeniable star of the location. While the internal layout of the campground might be described as "jankie" or "erratic" by some, indicating potentially narrow roads and tight turns for larger RVs, the advantage of being right on Lake Martin often outweighs these minor inconveniences.
Its position in Dadeville offers a balance of natural seclusion with reasonable proximity to necessary amenities. While the campground itself is about enjoying nature, nearby towns provide access to grocery stores, restaurants, and other services within a 20-30 minute drive. This ensures that while you can fully immerse yourself in the outdoors, you're not completely isolated from modern conveniences. The relative quietness of the area surrounding Dadeville also contributes to the peaceful atmosphere of the campground, enhancing its appeal as a serene retreat for those looking to escape the busier parts of Alabama.

Current (as of information available up to mid-2025) daily rates for RV full hookup sites are: $40 nightly (April-September) and $35 nightly (October-March). Weekly rates are $250 (April-September) and $210 (October-March). Monthly rates are $1400 (October-March), with monthly stays limited by policy.
Cabin fees also vary by rank and season (e.g., E-4 & Below: $75-$65/night; All others: $95-$75/night; DV/O6/GS15: $115/night). Weekly cabin rates can be around $425. These tiered pricing structures based on military affiliation are the primary "promotions" offered.

The spacious, wooded RV sites and peaceful atmosphere allow for genuine relaxation, a much-needed respite from daily routines or demanding military duties.
While some reviews point to maintenance challenges and a "jankie" layout, the overarching sentiment is one of appreciation for the location's inherent beauty and the friendly staff who are doing their best with the resources available. Mixed feelings about Maxwell-Gunter. So positive, negative, positive….Lake Martin is beautiful! The people working there were friendly. Sites spacious and wooded, peaceful. The other reviews are correct, not maintained well. If it breaks, don’t fix it. If warped, put a block on it. Pretty much….we have a lake and hook-ups, find your own way to get in and good luck. The layout is rather jankie. Being a military campground, standards are low. But, once you get over the layout frustration…relax and enjoy! Fishing, swimming, beach areas, quiet. Best for RV’s or tent camping, but a struggle for the larger motorhomes like ours. Suggest lot 36 or (if you can find it) 21 which is serene.
May 31, 2025 · Kelly McAbeeAlthough it advertises boat rentals, pontoon rentals, jet skiis, none of them were in working condition. As a matter of fact, they no longer have jet skis. Only 1 water tricycle and only one paddle boat was in working condition. The staff was very friendly and the stay was enjoyable.I’ll be back.
Aug 12, 2024 · Tammy WorleyBeautiful property on Lake Martin. Called to make reservations and they called back in within an hour to complete. Travelled there in a small camper/van. The lake had nice sandy bottom so I swam from my campsite. Many docks around the campground for people with boats which seemed to be assigned to certain campsites. Also had a marina. We didn't have a boat so I don't know how that worked. Bathrooms were old but clean and well provisioned. Had a great hot shower with excellent water pressure. Lots of dock work being done in preparation for summer. Property hilly, many sites not flat. Might be difficult for large RV's. Peeked into cabins which looked old but clean and neat. Porches around cabins getting a little rickety. Nice sandy beach with volleyball net. Playground for kids. Almost no one there on Easter weekend. Need to support this Rec center so it can continue!!!! Hidden gem.
Apr 19, 2025 · Bonnie HarrisThis park is a hidden gem. It is super quiet and well kept. We first arrived and we couldn't fit into our site, our rv is 36ft and the site was a bit snug and they let us move over to a bigger site. The site we moved to was level, some of the other sites were not. But otherwise we really enjoyed our stay!
Nov 15, 2023 · Brianna HNot properly maintained, staff SEEM to be chilling every time I saw them, no restrooms operating when we arrived, dump station plugged, the other had a severe water leak. 30 amp breaker not working at site 33, informed staff and two days later still the same. Looked like power lines on the ground with a power pole broken off, appeared to be that way for some time. Had to be let into a trailer for laundry because the Rv laundry is being repaired? Never saw anyone working on it in 3 days. It’s a beautiful site with great potential but is run down, from other reviews this seems to be starting about 2014 ish. Please fix it up.
