Introduction / Overview: Your Midcoast Maine Basecamp
For Maine residents looking to explore the beautiful Midcoast region without the premium price tag of more centralized locations, Northport Campground offers an accessible and value-oriented option. Positioned strategically between the bustling maritime city of Belfast and the picturesque harbor town of Camden, this campground provides a practical and tranquil home base for discovering Penobscot Bay. Operated by the Knight family, Northport Campground aims to provide a relaxed, family-friendly camping experience amidst a grassy, shaded setting near the woods.
The core appeal for local users lies in its affordability and its convenient access to iconic Midcoast attractions. Campers frequently praise the spacious, grassy sites, many of which offer almost full hookups, a significant benefit for RV travelers. While the campground is recognized for its rustic charm and the kindness of its long-time owners, it is important for prospective guests to be aware of its operational style. This is a traditional, no-frills, cash-and-check only operation where the emphasis is often placed on the natural setting and the proximity to the coast, rather than the newest facilities. For Mainers who appreciate a laid-back, "get-what-you-pay-for" approach in a prime location, Northport Campground remains a relevant option.
Location and Accessibility: The Hub of Midcoast Exploration

Conclusion: Why Northport Campground is Suitable for Maine Locals
Northport Campground is a perfect match for Maine locals who understand and appreciate the value of a no-nonsense, family-run business in a million-dollar location. It is the accessible 'back door' to Midcoast Maine. While recent reviews suggest that some aging facilities—particularly the bathrooms—require attention, the core strengths of the campground remain compelling for local residents.
The unbeatable location on Route 1, midway between the cultural centers of Camden and Belfast, allows Mainers to experience the finest aspects of Penobscot Bay—from sailing and hiking Mount Battie to enjoying world-class lobster—without paying a premium for a waterfront view. The reasonable rates, combined with the one-night-free-per-week incentive on certain sites, make it a truly budget-friendly option for an extended family vacation. For those who prioritize spacious, quiet sites, proximity to attractions, and a down-to-earth atmosphere over polished, modern infrastructure, Northport Campground offers an honest and economical way to enjoy one of Maine's most beautiful and celebrated coastal regions.
Very nice camp ground. My Girl Scout Troop enjoyed our time there. Play ground could use a little upgrade according to the girls but they still had fun. Grates are available you just need to ask in the office. The Knight family that owns and runs it were very kind.
Aug 09, 2017 · Jennifer BragdonUPDATED: We have stayed at this campground a number of times - It used to be very well maintained and run. While we love the almost full hook-up grassy sites (no cable) and the location to Camden, the Maine coast and Young's Lobster pound, I am disappointed to report that some of the recent reviews are true. The older man who checked in our party had been drinking to say the least. There was no number on one of the 2 campsites we reserved causing an issue with our own group. The campground offers no discount to seniors, or the normal groups. But the reason I went in and changed this review was the bathrooms- You have to be kidding! What a dump! Forget the fact that there was no paper towels or even soap- drywall was pulled off the wall in much of the men's room and a large section of a wall board was resting in a shower stall- We will come back to see if things improve but this place needs attention now. By the way- It took these people 11 months to cash a check that I wrote last September 2016. Nice surprise. Cash or check is all they take by the way. No. We won't be going back.
Aug 19, 2017 · Gary LeeHere's my 5 year rview of Northport Campground in Northport, ME We stayed here in 2019 and at that time the owner said he was going to be updating and clearning up the campground. The pool had been closed and the bathroom/shower house was disgusting with black "mold" or something around the edges of the shower floors. We had been assurred that these things were going to be taken care of. We stayed here for 8 nights! At the rate they charged, ($60/night), it is a shame and if we could have gotten a refund and gone elsewhere, we would have!! Although their website says "Clean indoor rest rooms with flush toilets and hot water. Hot showers," not one thing has been remodeled or fixed since we had been here 5 years ago. There is no way I or my husband would shower in these showers. There is no office, there is no laundry room, there is no wifi. The trash dumpster hasn't been emptied since we got here and when we arrived it was already almost full! There is one "permanent" mobile home that looks like it's ready to fall off its "foundation". They have a food truck in front of some of the worst, trashiest area behind it and next to his house. This beautiful piece of property has deteriorated badly. It had about 10 RVs, and only about 3 had any people. All the rest looked like they were being stored here! My advice is stay away. No matter how nice the owner was, the campground is a rip-off.
