For New Yorkers eager to tap into the unparalleled outdoor opportunities of Oswego County, particularly the world-renowned Salmon River, the Salmon River Family Campground in Pulaski, NY, offers a practical and community-focused base camp. Opening its doors in 2023, this relatively new destination has quickly established itself as a go-to spot for anglers, families, and solo adventurers who prize location and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere above all else. This article provides an in-depth look at what New York locals can expect from their stay at this highly-rated location, drawing directly from public data and authentic customer experiences.
Introduction / Overview
The Salmon River Family Campground, owned and operated by an enthusiastic team, including the frequently mentioned George, is a destination designed with the serious New York sportsman in mind. Located in Pineville, nestled between the towns of Pulaski and Altmar, the campground’s primary appeal lies in its immediate proximity to the action. It is situated within the fishing premises of the Salmon River and is located right across the street from the Pineville Pool Parking area—a key access point to the 12 miles of public fishing rights along the river.
Since opening, the campground has received strong praise for its dedication to customer service. Customers consistently highlight the welcoming atmosphere, the owner’s accommodation of requests, and the general feeling of being treated like family. This focus on guest experience is a crucial factor for repeat visitors, with some groups booking for multiple seasons in advance, specifically noting, “If you are coming to fish this is the place to stay!” The campground caters to a variety of campers, from those with large RVs to traditional tent campers, and even those needing a rental camper. This commitment to flexibility and location makes it an essential consideration for anyone planning a trip to the Central New York outdoor region.
Location and Accessibility
The campground is strategically located at 437 County Rte 48 #445, Pulaski, NY 13142, USA.
This address places the campground directly on County Route 48, a key road running through the Salmon River corridor. Its Pineville location is ideal, sitting in the heart of the most famous stretch of the river. This immediate access to prime fishing territory—especially for the annual salmon and steelhead runs—is the core of its value proposition for New York anglers.
For local users driving from New York City, Long Island, or the greater Capital Region, Pulaski is conveniently situated just off Interstate 81, making the drive relatively straightforward. The campground is about an hour's drive north of Syracuse and in close proximity to a multitude of other regional attractions, including the Salmon River Falls Unique Area (offering stunning 110-foot waterfalls and gorge hiking), Selkirk Shores State Park (on the shores of Lake Ontario), and the extensive state forest lands, which offer additional hiking, hunting, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing opportunities. The local area around Pulaski provides easy access to dining, local shops, and essential services, ensuring that campers are never too far from convenience while maintaining their connection to nature.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
The Salmon River Family Campground is perfectly suited for New York locals for two key reasons: unparalleled location and exceptional hospitality.
Firstly, for the enormous community of New York State anglers, its location on County Route 48 near the Pineville Pool is simply unbeatable. It eliminates the hassle of long drives to access prime public fishing rights, allowing more time to be spent on the water pursuing world-class salmon and steelhead. Secondly, the campground offers the kind of welcoming, owner-operated environment that many New Yorkers seek—a break from the impersonal large-scale resorts. The management’s enthusiastic and accommodating approach fosters a genuine sense of community, making it a place where visitors aren't just guests, but are treated “like family.” While one review did highlight a need for increased consistency in management presence—an understandable growing pain for a new business—the overwhelmingly positive feedback on the friendly, responsive service and great location solidifies this spot as an essential, high-value destination. For a weekend fishing trip, a family adventure, or a seasonal base for winter sports, the Salmon River Family Campground provides the essential infrastructure and local advantage that New York residents are looking for.

We were one of the first groups to stay in 2023 and we loved it so much we came back for 2024 and while we were there we booked for 2025. George was super helpful and had great communication with us and accommodated all our requests without hesitation. He set us up and had us ready for our amazing weekend. We choose to stay at salmon river family campground because of the welcoming atmosphere and the great location being close to the river. If you are coming to fish this is the place to stay!
Oct 13, 2024 · Kylee GrangerGeorge..George..where are you George?!?! I showed up at the time I told you, hung around a few, left & came back three more times knocking on the door but nobody was home! My phone service was spotty & we didn't connect but there was no camp spots left anyway. I seen the garden hose someone complained about, a few other bad reviews I should've considered but gave it a go. Business tip; run it like one. 👍
Oct 11, 2024 · J CStated that full water/septic and wifi would be set up soon after our arrival. We stayed 10 months out of the year agreement and the only thing we got was the workers repeatedly knocking on our door demanding that our camper be relocated to different spots on the campground. We left after 10 months with the agreement that we would be reimbursed for the 2 months that we did not stay due to the lack of previously stated amenities, that was almost a year ago and we are still waiting to be paid the remaining $890 and our attempts to contact the owner go unanswered. I would not recommend this place to anyone.
Jun 03, 2024 · Jaymie GerlachMy boyfriend and I stayed at this campsite this weekend. I had an amazing time and the view was beautiful especially while laying underneath the clear skies looking at the stars. I will for sure be coming back sometime soon the owner was so sweet and he treats everyone like family :) he’s so happy and positive, he put a smile on our face and made us laugh!
