Introduction / Overview
For decades, Sawbill Lake Campground has served as a cherished and vital outpost for Minnesota residents venturing into the pristine wilderness of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). More than just a place to pitch a tent, this campground is a full-service hub, conveniently located at the very edge of the famed wilderness boundary. Operated under the authority of the Superior National Forest and managed by a dedicated local outfitter, Sawbill Lake Campground strikes a perfect balance between accessibility and the authentic Northwoods experience.
Nestled within a thick, beautiful red pine forest, the campground features 51 individual campsites, many of which are generously spaced to offer the privacy that Minnesota campers value. With nearly half the sites available for reservation via the national system and the rest open on a first-come, first-served basis, it provides flexibility for both meticulous planners and spontaneous adventurers. It’s an ideal spot for an overnight stay before an early morning paddle into the BWCAW, or a comfortable, longer-term base camp for enjoying the surrounding Superior National Forest, hiking the nearby trails, and exploring the North Shore region.
The overall atmosphere is friendly, professional, and deeply rooted in the history of wilderness travel. From the clean, well-maintained facilities to the helpful, knowledgeable staff, Sawbill Lake Campground consistently delivers a high-quality camping experience for families, solo travelers, and large groups seeking their next great Minnesota outdoor adventure.
Location and Accessibility
Sawbill Lake Campground is located at the end of the 24-mile-long Sawbill Trail, a famously scenic and partially gravel road leading directly from Minnesota Highway 61 in Tofte, MN. This location at the end of the road ensures that the environment is remote and tranquil, yet the facility remains easy to find and reach. The official address is Sawbill Trail, Tofte, MN 55615, USA.
This campground's single greatest accessibility advantage is its direct, immediate placement at the Sawbill Lake Entry Point (#38) for the BWCAW. This allows campers to check into their site and launch their canoe or kayak into the wilderness area with minimal effort. While the campsites themselves are situated on a hill overlooking the lake, providing partial views through the forest, the water’s edge is only a short walk away. Importantly, the lake access from the campground is restricted to non-motorized, carry-down watercraft, maintaining a quiet, protected environment.
The campground’s proximity to the full-service outfitter is a major draw. Visitors can drive directly to their site, complete their gear preparation, and handle all necessary permits and rentals without ever needing to leave the immediate area. While the drive from Tofte on the scenic Sawbill Trail takes some time, the destination is a true Northwoods wilderness haven.
Services Offered
The services at Sawbill Lake Campground are designed to provide a comfortable and convenient experience while supporting primitive wilderness exploration. They go beyond the basics of many National Forest sites.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
Sawbill Lake Campground is tailor-made for Minnesota locals for several practical and experiential reasons. Primarily, it serves as the ultimate logistical hub for a BWCAW trip. For those who value preparation and an early start, camping here the night before entering the wilderness allows for quick gear staging, permit pickup, and an efficient morning launch, maximizing their valuable time off. The comfort of returning to the campground after a demanding wilderness excursion, knowing a hot shower, laundry facilities, and a cold drink are waiting just steps away, is a significant advantage.
Furthermore, the high quality of the campsites—well-spaced, clean, and set beneath the beautiful pine canopy—provides a relaxing family vacation in itself, even without paddling into the protected wilderness area. Locals looking for an accessible, yet deeply woodsy, experience on the North Shore will find the convenience of the dump station for RVs, the multiple water sources, and the friendly, expert staff to be exceptionally appealing. Sawbill Lake Campground truly offers the perfect launching pad and recovery base, seamlessly blending the convenience of a developed campground with immediate access to Minnesota’s signature wild treasure, the Boundary Waters.
Great campground, pretty big. Second time we stayed before launching into BWCA. Very convenient and spaced out sites, pit toilets, potable water spigots. No open dumpsters found, so we packed our garbage out. Each site had a picnic table and a fire pit.
Jul 23, 2025 · Em VI’ve camped here twice now. It’s been a great experience both times. Easy to find your spot. There are a few water facets spread throughout the campsites. Restrooms as well that are very clean. The staff are helpful. Easy access to the Lake. Bring lots of bug spray and sunscreen!
Jul 14, 2021 · Noah PattersonRed haired host had definitely complained and targeted us when she found out about our group coming. Also, after finding out that our dogs needed to be leashed, she came around 3 more times to yell at us and threatened to call the sheriff the 4th time even though we were following all her rules. WHILE the other campers dog’s were roaming off leash around our camp site TWICE and she did not stop by to talk to them once about leashing their dog. Felt targeted because of our race along with our sexuality. Not coming back here if she is still here. It was suppose to be a fun relaxing time but every time she strolled around to make rounds, it was uncomfortable because she would stop ONLY AT OUR campsite and stare at us as if we were doing something wrong. Beautiful lake and awesome campers, but the host made our experience extremely uncomfortable and bad. The photo of the dog was proof of the other campers dog unleashed in our campsite.
Jun 16, 2024 · m2 RickAn absolutely incredible place, the views will make your mind absolutely boggle. Campsite was large and clean. Outfitters were helpful and good service.
Sep 25, 2019 · Jon HanlonThis is a large campground on Sawbill Lake. The campsites are all spacious with good distance between them and lie under towering pines. Bathrooms are pit toilets and Sawbill Canoe Outfitters is located within the campground, offering supplies, etc.
