Spalding Dam Site Campground About
For many Nebraskans, the allure of the open road and the tranquility of nature are strong motivators for a weekend getaway. If you’re a local looking for an unpretentious, budget-friendly, and truly peaceful place to set up camp, then Spalding Dam Site Campground in Spalding, Nebraska, might just be your next favorite discovery. This isn't a flashy resort campground, but rather a charming, down-to-earth spot that offers exactly what many seasoned campers appreciate: affordability, quiet surroundings, and access to some good old-fashioned outdoor fun.
Imagine rolling into a campsite where the biggest decision of the day is whether to cast a line in the river or simply relax under the Nebraska sky. That’s the kind of uncomplicated, refreshing experience Spalding Dam Site Campground provides. It’s a testament to the idea that sometimes, the simplest pleasures are the best, especially when you’re looking to unwind from the daily grind right here in our home state. As one camper, "Airbrush Mike," enthusiastically put it, "Well you just cant beat $5 per night with electric. I loved it. Cant wait to go back. Good place to recoup!!!!" This sentiment perfectly captures the essence of this local gem.
Spalding Dam Site Campground is located in the charming town of Spalding, NE 68665, USA. Situated in central Nebraska, this campground offers a convenient escape without requiring an extensive journey for many residents across the state. While not a large metropolitan area, Spalding provides a quiet, community-oriented atmosphere that perfectly complements a relaxing camping trip.
The accessibility of the campground is one of its key advantages. The roads leading into Spalding are generally well-maintained, making for a smooth drive for both RVs and vehicles towing trailers. Once you arrive in Spalding, the campground itself is straightforward to locate. Its position near the dam and the Cedar River offers not only scenic views but also immediate access to water-based activities. For those coming from larger Nebraska cities like Grand Island, Kearney, or Omaha, Spalding is within a reasonable driving distance, making it an ideal choice for a weekend or short-term camping excursion. The ease of getting there means you can spend less time navigating and more time enjoying the natural beauty of the area. Plus, being within the town of Spalding means that local conveniences like a general store or perhaps a small eatery are not far, should you need to restock supplies or simply want a break from cooking at the campsite.
Spalding Dam Site Campground focuses on providing essential services that make camping enjoyable and accessible, particularly for those on a budget.
Electric Hookups: A standout feature, especially for its price point, is the availability of electric hookups. This means you can power your RV or charge your devices, significantly enhancing comfort during your stay. As the review from "Airbrush Mike" highlighted, the "electric only" sites are a major draw. It's important to note that information suggests these sites are electric-only, meaning water hookups might not be available directly at each site, but common water sources are typically nearby.
Overnight Camping: Unlike some spots that are purely for day-use fishing, Spalding Dam Site Campground is explicitly set up for overnight camping. This makes it perfect for weekend trips or longer stays, allowing you to truly immerse yourself in the camping experience. As one prospective visitor inquired, "is it a place you can go camping for the weekend or is just you can stay a few hours to just fish?" The answer is definitely for weekend camping and more!
Basic Amenities: While specific details on restroom and shower facilities at the Dam Site Campground are less widely publicized compared to a larger commercial park, it's common for such municipal campgrounds to offer basic public toilets. For self-contained RVs, this might not be a major concern, but tent campers should be prepared. It's always a good practice to verify the exact amenities when planning your visit. Information for Spalding City Park Camping (which seems to be managed by the same entity) mentions two sets of playground equipment, a sand volleyball court, tennis courts, a basketball court, two baseball diamonds, a football field, and a running/walking track, so some of these recreational amenities might be accessible to Dam Site campers due to proximity within Spalding.
Spalding Dam Site Campground offers several appealing features that contribute to a pleasant and memorable outdoor experience for Nebraskans.
Incredibly Affordable Rates: One of the most significant highlights is the cost-effectiveness. With rates reportedly as low as $5 per night with electric hookups, it's one of the most budget-friendly camping options in Nebraska. This affordability makes it an accessible choice for families, individuals, and groups looking to enjoy the outdoors without a hefty expense.
Excellent Fishing Opportunities: The campground’s location by the Spalding Dam and the Cedar River means immediate access to prime fishing spots. The Cedar River is known to be a good place for fishing, with fish bypasses having been built to allow migration around barriers and help fish populations, particularly channel catfish, repopulate the river. The presence of "a few ponds nearby" also adds to the fishing variety. This makes it an ideal destination for anglers of all skill levels.
Peaceful and Relaxing Atmosphere: Reviews suggest a calm and tranquil environment. It’s a place where you can genuinely "recoup," as one camper noted. This peaceful setting is perfect for those looking to escape the noise and stress of city life and enjoy the quietude of nature.
Open Year-Round: According to some public information, Spalding Dam Site Campground is open all year. This is a significant advantage, allowing Nebraskans to enjoy camping across different seasons, whether it's a warm summer weekend or a crisp autumn retreat. However, it's always wise to check with local management for any seasonal changes in available amenities or specific closures.
Proximity to Town Amenities: While offering a natural escape, the campground is not isolated. Its location within Spalding means that essentials are within easy reach. A general store or local businesses can provide any forgotten items or a quick bite to eat, adding a layer of convenience to your camping adventure.
Given the already low nightly rate of reportedly $5 with electric hookups at Spalding Dam Site Campground, specific, additional promotions might not be regularly offered in the same way a larger commercial park might. However, the consistent affordability is in itself a significant "special offer." For the most up-to-date pricing and any potential seasonal deals, it is always best to directly contact the City of Spalding or the campground management. Information suggests that there might be distinctions between "Reserved prepay and nonrefundable" options and "Open Camping first come" options for rates, with the latter often being more affordable. For example, Spalding City Park Camping (which seems to be managed by the same local entity) lists "Open Camping first come – $15.00 per night" and "Spalding Dam/Mill Camping: Electric only, no water. Reserved prepay and nonrefundable – $20.00 per night. Open Camping first come – $10.00." This indicates that if you are flexible and arrive on a first-come, first-served basis, you might find even more attractive rates.
For direct inquiries about Spalding Dam Site Campground, including current availability, specific amenities, and any updated pricing or policies, you will likely need to contact the City of Spalding offices. Information regarding municipal campgrounds is often managed through the local city hall or public works department.

While a direct phone number specifically for the campground itself is not widely listed as a separate entity, general inquiries about the city’s recreation facilities, including the campground, can often be directed to the City of Spalding. Look for contact information for the City Clerk's office or the local municipal office on the official Spalding, Nebraska, municipal website. For other general local recreational facilities in Spalding, a public management phone number is listed as 308-497-2416. It would be advisable to use this number or search for the City of Spalding's official website for the most accurate contact details and information regarding payment methods and reservations, especially since some sites might be first-come, first-served while others might be reserved.
Spalding Dam Site Campground is an ideal spot for Nebraskans seeking a genuine, no-frills camping experience that perfectly balances outdoor enjoyment with incredible value. Its primary appeal for local users lies in its remarkable affordability, making it accessible for frequent visits and extended stays without straining the budget. This is a significant draw for families and individuals alike who want to maximize their time in nature without overspending.
The location offers a peaceful retreat, away from the hustle and bustle, allowing for genuine relaxation and a chance to "recoup" as suggested by visitors. The excellent fishing opportunities in the Cedar River and nearby ponds provide a fantastic activity for anglers of all ages, adding a layer of recreational value that appeals to many Nebraskans. Furthermore, the provision of electric hookups, even at such a low price, adds a crucial level of comfort for RV campers, distinguishing it from many primitive camping options.
Being open year-round offers flexibility for impromptu trips or planned seasonal adventures. Its accessibility within Nebraska means less travel time and more time spent enjoying the serene environment. For Nebraskans who appreciate simple pleasures, quiet surroundings, and a strong connection to the outdoors, Spalding Dam Site Campground is truly a hidden gem – a place to unplug, recharge, and create lasting memories without a hefty price tag. It's the kind of local spot that embodies the true spirit of Nebraska's laid-back charm and natural beauty.

One of my favorite places. I grew up there my dad worked at the power plant so I would be fishing or go for walks along the river.a good place to clear your head. Or just relax.
Came in late at night and was able to find a spot quickly and easily. Listened to a big bullfrog for a while. In the morning the area was covered in mist. Great place.
Fun place to take the grandkids
