Introduction / Overview
For the Minnesota adventurer seeking a truly secluded and unforgettable camping experience, the Star Island Campground on Cass Lake is the ultimate Northwoods destination. Situated squarely in the middle of one of the largest and most pristine lakes in the region, this campground offers a level of quietude and immersion in nature that is hard to find at roadside spots. Star Island itself is a unique jewel of the Chippewa National Forest, famously hosting Lake Windigo—a lake within an island—earning it recognition as a geological marvel.
The campground is explicitly a primitive destination, designed for tent campers and those who embrace the "pack in and pack out" ethic. It’s an ideal choice for boaters, canoeists, and kayakers, as the primary access is by watercraft, instantly filtering out casual visitors and ensuring a genuinely peaceful retreat. One satisfied visitor captured the essence perfectly, noting it as a "Lovely quiet camping site," with "Clean clear looking lake water!" The experience here is less about amenities and more about embracing the solitude and natural beauty of a true island wilderness camp.
Located on the southwestern shore of the star-shaped island, the campground provides rustic sites nestled in a dense forest, offering shelter and privacy. Campers here are rewarded with unparalleled access to Cass Lake’s renowned fishing grounds and miles of scenic island trails. If your idea of camping involves listening to the loons under a dark, starry sky after a day of paddling and swimming, Star Island Campground should be at the top of your list.
Location and Accessibility
The Star Island Campground is geographically located within Cass Lake, MN 56633, USA, right in the heart of the Chippewa National Forest. Its unique location—on an island in the middle of Cass Lake—is what defines its accessibility and character.
The key point of access is by boat or canoe only. This restriction is the very element that contributes to its renowned quiet and seclusion. Visitors must launch their watercraft from the mainland, typically utilizing public access points such as the US Highway 2 Wayside Rest Area east of the city of Cass Lake, which offers ample parking and drive-down boat access. Local marinas and resorts also provide parking and boat rental services for those who don't own a watercraft.
Once across the clear, expansive waters of Cass Lake, the island campground is situated on the south side. Access is easy from the water, allowing campers to "pull a boat up to" the shoreline, as noted in a customer review. This setup requires self-sufficiency but delivers a truly exclusive wilderness experience, making the journey an integral and enjoyable part of the adventure. The island itself is a mix of public Chippewa National Forest land and private cabin holdings, and the campground ensures public access to the magnificent shoreline and interior trails.

Lovely quiet camping site. Pit toilet. Needs TP however, but there was a bottle of hand sanitizer! Beach is easy to pull a boat up to but needs some mowing along the shoreline and paths. Clean clear looking lake water!
