For generations of Mainers, the call of the deep woods and the clear, cold water of the Rangeley Lakes Region represents the ultimate escape. The Stephen Phillips Memorial Preserve Wilderness Campground is an institution that perfectly captures this essence, offering a rare, protected space where one can genuinely disconnect and fully immerse in the state's legendary natural beauty. This is not your typical RV park; this is primitive camping at its finest, a purposeful retreat from the modern world that respects the vision of its founder, Stephen Phillips, who sought to preserve this corner of Mooselookmeguntic Lake for public enjoyment and conservation.
Located within a vast 6,000+ acre preserve, this campground is a sanctuary for those who believe that sometimes, "it's not what you have but what you don't have." The absence of distractions—namely, no electricity, no showers, and intentionally, no cell service—is the main draw for many local campers. It is a place for groups and families to truly bond, surrounded by the stunning, unspoiled scenery of the Western Mountains. As one delighted visitor noted, the staff is "extremely accommodating," and everyone is "genuinely impressed by the natural beauty of the reserve," often leading to plans for a return trip, year after year. The lakeside sites, with their beautiful views, are the perfect backdrop for creating lasting memories of Maine wilderness adventure.
Location and Accessibility
The Stephen Phillips Memorial Preserve is situated in Oquossoc, Maine, right on the shores of Mooselookmeguntic Lake, one of the largest and most pristine bodies of water in the Rangeley chain of lakes. The physical address is 377 Stephens Rd, Oquossoc, ME 04964, USA. Reaching the Preserve often requires following a scenic, winding route off of local roads like the Herbie Welch Trail, leading to the mainland office (the Log Cabin).
Access to the various campsites is a fundamental part of the adventure. The Preserve features a unique array of camping zones: Mainland sites, which are within walking distance of the parking area, and a significant number of spectacular sites located on offshore islands, including Students Island, Toothaker Island, Griffin Island, and Farrington Island, as well as along the Western Shore. The majority of these remote sites are attainable only by watercraft, requiring campers to either bring their own canoe or rent one from the Preserve office. The location is an integral part of the Rangeley Lakes Region, providing boat access to premier fishing and exploration spots across thousands of acres of preserved land. This intentional separation from the main roads ensures that the atmosphere remains rustic, peaceful, and truly wild.

The services at Stephen Phillips Memorial Preserve are defined by their commitment to a rustic, wilderness-first experience, offering essential provisions to support comfortable primitive camping while minimizing the environmental impact. Conclusion: Why This Place is Suitable for Locals
The Stephen Phillips Memorial Preserve Wilderness Campground is perfectly suited for Maine residents because it embodies the state's deep cultural appreciation for conservation and the rugged outdoor lifestyle. For a local, this is the authentic, unvarnished Maine experience—a purposeful retreat from suburban amenities to the simplicity of the woods.
Unlike crowded commercial campgrounds, the Preserve offers a true "get away from the everyday craziness" atmosphere, with the genuine feeling of being "truly in the woods." The lack of cell service is not an inconvenience; it is a blessing, allowing Maine families and friends to truly engage with each other and the pristine environment. Camping on an island in Mooselookmeguntic Lake is a rite of passage and a proud local tradition. By choosing this Preserve, Mainers are not just booking a campsite; they are supporting a charitable trust dedicated to protecting over 6,000 acres of their state's heritage, ensuring that this sanctuary of natural beauty will remain available for future generations to explore, fish, and find their own "amazing location" and "happy place" on the water.

The sites are right on the lake though some have easier access than others. There is no cell service so you're truly in the woods.

Aug 11, 2025 · Jacob Brooks-MadgeyBeautiful lake! Very relaxing. Dog friendly. Canoed out to a remote site on Students Island which is not far from the main campground. Many of the campsites are grouped close together and would be great for big parties. There are some more isolated sites. The staff were very helpful when I called for information.
Sep 27, 2020 · AllegraBeautiful area and extremely reclusive. My favorite camping spot. Renting and taking canoes out on lake Mooselookmeguntic is absolutely serene.
