The region is highly sought after by local anglers and hunters due to its remoteness and proximity to significant waterways. The Richardson Lakes are a key part of the famed Rangeley Lakes chain, providing miles of boatable water and legendary fishing opportunities for Landlocked Salmon and Brook Trout. Access often involves traveling several miles on rural roads, which contributes to the campground’s remote and peaceful atmosphere. Campers are strongly encouraged to come prepared with all necessary provisions, as nearby shopping and dining options are extremely limited, reinforcing the self-sufficient spirit of a true Maine outdoor vacation. The campground's remote setting also means that cell service can be spotty or non-existent for some providers, offering a forced digital detox that many Mainers welcome.

South Arm Campground is a beloved destination precisely because it offers what so many Maine residents value most: genuine remoteness without sacrificing vital access to the outdoors. It provides a unique blend of convenience—for RVers with hookups and a boat launch—and rugged adventure, with its legendary boat-in wilderness sites. For the local Mainer, this campground represents the perfect opportunity to disconnect, fish for famous native salmon and trout, and enjoy the pristine Richardson Lakes. The distance from major towns is seen as an asset, guaranteeing a peaceful experience where the only persistent sound is the call of the loons over the cool lake water. It is a place to uphold the state’s long tradition of self-reliant camping, a perfect setting for family traditions, and a true gateway to the wild, scenic heart of the Western Maine Mountains.
Good campground with water sites, bathrooms with showers, rent boat or canoe, or bring your own as they have a boat launch and docks where you can rent a slip. Store sells ice and a few other things. Lake water is cooler than most other lakes, refreshing as we say.
Jul 21, 2025 · Jeffrey WintersIt’s wayyy out there so a great spot to get away from town. However, the two nights we stayed there was a camper next to us, no one was there all weekend- an alarm on the camper went off from 4:30am - 7am the first night and 2:30-6am. When I told the office about it they checked on the wrong camper, when at check out we told them we came to relax and get away from alarms to have a relaxing weekend they couldn’t do anything to reimburse us for the inconvenience when other campers next to us also heard it. They could have refunded one night and choose not to do anything but shrug.. they knew who owned the camper.. we were also told we had a site on the water, we did not. We usually go to Coos Canyon but they were full up & wanted to try somewhere new. Lesson learned. It was really pretty at South Arm but not worth having that issue again with no attempt to make the situation better. If they reach out I’d be willing to change my rating. But beware camping next to “lifer” campers or Rv’s that are empty.
Aug 03, 2025 · AliThis place was fun. They do shut off the power during the night so keep that in mind on hot summer days. It’s very gorgeous, they have an amazing view.
Aug 04, 2025 · Amber RiendeauSoutharm campground in Andover Maine is a great camping experience. Remote sites are clean. Sites are far enough apart for complete privacy. Boat slips at main campground are easy to dock, plenty of firewood for sale. Bathrooms are spotless. Showers are the same. Already making plans for 2026 summer camping trip .
