Introduction / Overview
For New Hampshire locals seeking the true, restorative silence of the Great North Woods, Umbagog Lake State Park Campground stands out as a genuine hidden gem. Located in the picturesque town of Errol, this state park offers an experience that expertly balances rugged wilderness immersion with exceptional, well-maintained facilities. It is a vital access point to the breathtaking Umbagog Lake, a large, pristine body of water straddling the border with Maine and forming part of the Umbagog Lake National Wildlife Refuge. This is where New Hampshire's natural heritage is on full display.
Visitors consistently rave about the park's tranquil environment, highlighted by the iconic, haunting calls of the common loon, which is a prevalent and beloved feature of the lake. Far from being a mere roadside stop, Umbagog Lake State Park is a destination designed for the serious outdoor enthusiast, the family seeking a digital detox, and the New Hampshire native who appreciates a state park run with professional dedication. The park's commitment to high standards is evident in the positive feedback from users, who frequently praise the friendly, professional staff—from the maintenance crew, like Danny, keeping the cabins and grounds immaculate, to team members like Drew, ensuring docks and tools are perfectly organized. This smooth, efficient operation has earned the park a reputation as one of the best-kept state parks in the entire country, a point of pride for Granite Staters. It’s a place where the attention to detail, as noted by long-time park-goers, ensures a memorable and hassle-free stay.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
Umbagog Lake State Park Campground is perfectly suited for New Hampshire locals because it offers a quintessential Granite State wilderness experience without sacrificing quality or organization. For the resident who loves to camp, this park provides options for every comfort level—from full-hookup RV sites for a family weekend to rugged, boat-in primitive sites for the seasoned explorer. The remote northern location means fewer crowds than the more southerly parks, allowing locals to truly feel connected to the vast, untouched nature that defines their state's northern region. The commitment of the staff to cleanliness and efficiency, making the entire operation run "like a Swiss timepiece" as one visitor described, ensures that a weekend spent here is focused purely on relaxation and adventure, not on dealing with poorly maintained facilities. The RV sites are nice. They have enough space. The staff is super friendly. The views are incredible. One of my favorite night time sounds is the call of the common loon. They are prevailant here. So peaceful. Thisbisba place I will return to,no doubt.
Sep 21, 2025 · Doug HowellThis was my first time at Umbagog Lake State Park Campground. I was impressed! Danny, the maintenance guy, has done an amazing job building and updating doors and cabins. Drew, another team member, was constantly working on docks, organizing, getting things done, all in preparation for the season open. Ann Marie answered all my questions, shared history, gave clear guidance and, overall, made it very clear how much she valued every single team member. This place runs like a Swiss timepiece, smoothly and very efficiently. Cabins are situated to maximize views and while wildlife is abundant, the team does their best to minimize the poo associated with their presence. The cabins, the boats, the tools, the bathrooms, the docks...Everything is given the attention deserved in a state park. Quite frankly, I think it is the best one I have seen and I have been to MANY state parks around the country. And, to those who wonder, of course there are bugs, but goodness gracious, this team cleans constantly to rid all spaces of them and, duh, it's a CAMPGROUND, not your civilized home. This place is VERY well kept. I can't wait to bring my classmates here to enjoy it!!! And if you see this hat and or patch, please go up to them and thank them for the amazing job they are doing!
Apr 08, 2025 · Nicole Starr Bauman, CNI GlobalBeautiful campground on the southern end of Lake Umbagog. Sites are generously spaced. Loons on the lake. Sweet store with ice cream, hats, and information, wood and ice. Beautiful marina and excellent access to Umbagog. Beautiful beach and picnic area. And beautiful, new bathrooms , laundry room, ... The flora and fauna are spectacular. We loved our stay!
May 23, 2024 · Jen B.Second time here in 2 years! Load the canoe and paddle a couple miles to the remote campsite for 2 nights. Last time, we had our own private island(R32). This time, we're out on a penninsula (R33). For thirty bucks a night, it can't be beat! Update:7/12/25 Back on the island (R32), and it's $40 a night now. It's still worth every penny!
Jul 12, 2025 · Dewey JohnsonI stayed at site number four for a week in september 2023. Site number 4 is completely unlevel. I have never had to Jack up the side of my trailer as much as I have at this site. (check out the picture). As you can see from the video, the bugs are intense. Intense! Bring bugnetting and bug screening. The showers are coin-operated and provide great water flow, but are expensive when compared to other new hamster state parks. There is good cell service at this park. I have AT&T and had 4G service with 4 bars. I spoke with others who had Verizon and they reported good service also. .
