For those of us who call Maine home, the search for the quintessential "Deep Woods" experience is a lifelong pursuit. We crave the solitude of the North Country, the sound of a rushing river, and the sight of a truly dark, star-filled night sky. While many campgrounds claim to offer an escape, few deliver on the promise of a genuine, unplugged wilderness retreat quite like Aziscoos Valley Campground. Located deep within the rugged and majestic mountainous terrain of Western Maine, this destination is a true local treasure, a place where the air is crisper, the stars are brighter, and the stresses of everyday life simply melt away. It is often referred to by those in the know as one of the finest, most intimate camping experiences in all of New England, making it a must-visit for any Maine resident seeking to reconnect with the state’s legendary natural heritage.
Aziscoos Valley Campground is more than just a stopping point; it’s an immersive basecamp perfectly positioned for exploring the vast, largely undeveloped wilderness of the Oxford County region. It stands out from many of our coastal or southern Maine parks for its remote nature and the spacious, open setting—a delightful rarity in our typically dense woodland landscape. The entire operation is built on a simple premise: providing a clean, comfortable home base so that you can focus entirely on the unparalleled outdoor recreation that defines the area. Whether you are an avid fly-fisherman, a canoe enthusiast, or simply a family looking for a profound disconnection from digital life, this campground offers a unique and authentic slice of Maine wilderness life that is both welcoming and profoundly serene. The sense of community here is strong, with great owners who are known for being down-to-earth and incredibly helpful, reinforcing that welcoming Maine spirit.
The demand for sites at this location speaks volumes about its quality. As a limited-site property, it manages to maintain a truly intimate feel, meaning that even when fully booked, the natural spacing and quiet atmosphere are preserved. This attention to preserving the core camping experience is a key reason why it garners such high praise from fellow Mainers and New Englanders who appreciate authentic outdoor living. This introduction merely scratches the surface of the natural beauty and excellent facilities that await visitors to this secluded Maine gem.
Aziscoos Valley Campground is situated in Lincoln Plantation, Maine, right on the Wilsons Mills Road (ME 03579). This location places it firmly in the northwestern corner of the state, a region known for its sprawling forests, high peaks, and pristine water bodies, including the expansive Aziscohos Lake and the famed Rangeley Lakes region. For Maine locals, reaching this destination means embracing the adventure of the journey itself. It is a purposefully remote spot, roughly an hour or more beyond more populated towns, ensuring that the tranquility you seek is fully realized upon arrival. The reward for the drive is the breathtaking, nearly 360-degree views of the surrounding mountainous terrain that greet you from almost every site.
The campground’s address, Wilsons Mills Rd, Lincoln Plantation, is a gateway to one of the most picturesque corners of Oxford County. It sits directly on the bank of the Magalloway River, a renowned waterway that winds through the valley. One of the location’s most charming landmarks is the historic Bennett-Bean Covered Bridge, which is easily accessible from the grounds via foot. This iconic piece of New England heritage adds a layer of picturesque charm to an already stunning natural setting. While the drive is substantial from the southern and central parts of Maine, it is the journey into the remote interior that truly signifies the start of a wilderness vacation. It's a reminder that the best of Maine's natural beauty often requires going just a little bit further off the beaten path.
Accessibility is balanced between being remote enough for a true wilderness experience and convenient enough to manage a multi-day stay. Visitors are strongly advised to arrive well-provisioned, as local supply options are minimal, reinforcing the sense of being truly "away." However, the location's direct river access and proximity to excellent hiking trails make it the ideal hub for a deep-woods excursion, perfectly connecting you to the natural landscape of Maine’s High Peaks region.
Despite its remote wilderness setting, Aziscoos Valley Campground is praised for offering a range of essential, high-quality services that ensure a comfortable stay, striking the perfect balance between rustic charm and modern convenience.

The season for Aziscoos Valley Campground typically runs from mid-May through mid-October, making reservations essential, particularly for peak summer months. Given the lack of reliable cell service at the location itself, direct phone contact is the preferred method for making arrangements and obtaining specific site details. The owners are the best resource for information on current conditions, fishing regulations, and the most accurate directions to this remote corner of Maine.
Aziscoos Valley Campground is not just suitable for Maine locals—it is the ideal destination for anyone seeking the authentic heart of the state’s wild interior. For residents, this campground offers a powerful antidote to the tourist bustle of the coast and the over-commercialization often found in more accessible parks. It provides a sanctuary where true wilderness is not an aspiration but a daily reality.
Firstly, it embodies the celebrated spirit of Maine’s remote North Woods. The remoteness is a feature, not a drawback, granting a level of peace and quiet that simply cannot be found closer to population centers. Secondly, the Magalloway River and the proximity to Aziscohos Lake represent some of the best fishing and paddling waters available, offering a high-quality recreational experience that locals can appreciate and utilize fully. Thirdly, the commitment to clean, well-maintained facilities in such a primitive setting—especially the "cleanest and most modern" restrooms—shows respect for the camper and proves that a deep woods experience does not have to mean sacrificing comfort. Finally, the intentional lack of Wi-Fi and cell service serves as a powerful incentive for Maine families to finally and completely unplug, fostering connection with each other and the stunning natural environment. It’s a return to what camping in Maine should be: vast, wild, serene, and unforgettable. This hidden gem is a must for any Mainer looking for their most authentic, refreshing outdoor adventure.

Probably my favorite campground in all of New England. This place is truly a hidden gem. Not a lot of sites available so you need to book early. The Sites themselves are mostly grassy and enormous. Nearly 360° views of the surrounding mountainous terrain from all sites. The Magalloway River runs parallel to the campground with a historic covered bridge crossing it (accessible by foot). You can tube, kayak, canoe, float or fish in this wonderful body of water. On a clear night Aziscohos is a star gazers dream, simply stunning. I’ve only been here in a pop up, but I believe there is a dump station. Most sites are “dry camping”, and that to me makes it that more “intimate” and true to what camping really is. There are a handful of sites that have water and electric. The restrooms and showers are the cleanest and most modern of any campground I’ve been to. Owners are great people and very down to Earth. I can’t say enough great things about this wonderful place.
Mar 04, 2023 · Joe StoverCamping in an ample meadow (a rarity in this wooded area). Some spots amongst the trees, too. Sites with and without electricity/water. Clean shower/toilet. Kind manager. Beautiful area on the Magalloway River, with picturesque covered Bennet Bridge.
Sep 20, 2023 · Stefanie SteinerFantastic campground right on the river. Level and spacious tent sites. And a super clean bathroom facility with a dishwashing sink. The owners/hosts are incredibly nice too!
Jul 03, 2025 · Charles SimpsonWhat a beautiful piece of land! Our group of four stayed here for one night, and loved it. I mean, they have a covered bridge! The sites are huge and the bath house is clean. Friendly hosts. Recommend.
Oct 11, 2021 · Jennifer McConnellI cannot say enough good things about this place. We had to book last minute due to some issues we had at another campsite earlier in the afternoon. The female owner answered the phone and got us right in for two nights. When we got there she was very pleasant and check in was very easy. Our campsite was very clean and what is great about this place is that they are very nicely spaced out so you really have some privacy. They provide you with a fire pit, a large trash barrel with bag, and also a picnic table. We set up and had supper and a wonderful night. It was nice and quiet, no one was playing loud music or dogs barking incessantly. The bath house was very clean, two toilets, two sinks and stand up shower that takes quarters, it was a little bit of a walk from our site, but that was okay. Our second night the owners drove around and stopped in to say hello which was great, asking how riding went, very friendly but not at all intrusive. Again we had a wonderful second night, and the next morning as we were packing up to leave the owner was out mowing the lawn and stopped by to chat with my boyfriend. We left with big smiles and plans to return next year.
