East Cook, MN 55604, USA
For Minnesota residents looking to truly disconnect and immerse themselves in the legendary North Woods, the Superior National Forest offers an unparalleled opportunity for wilderness camping. Forget the crowded RV parks and pre-booked amenities—we’re talking about a genuine backcountry experience. Among the numerous hidden gems scattered throughout this vast landscape is the secluded Superior National Forest Campsite #596, a site that promises quiet solitude and direct access to some of the region’s most challenging and rewarding paddling routes.
This is not your average state park campground; it's a primitive forest service site designed for the self-reliant adventurer. Campsite #596 embodies the spirit of the Arrowhead Region: rugged, beautiful, and deeply tied to the rhythms of nature. It serves as an ideal waypoint for extended canoe trips, a secluded base camp for fishing expeditions, or simply a sanctuary for those who value absolute peace beneath a canopy of pines.
The allure of a site like #596 lies in its simplicity and the raw beauty of its surroundings. It offers a glimpse into the classic Minnesota wilderness experience, a vital part of our state’s outdoor heritage.
Location and Accessibility: A True Wilderness Journey
Superior National Forest Campsite #596 is officially located in the broader area of East Cook, MN 55604. However, true to its backcountry nature, this site is not a simple roadside pull-off. It is situated deep within the forest's interior, making access a part of the adventure itself. Based on local adventurer reports, reaching Campsite #596 typically involves a significant paddle and/or portage, often navigating challenging waterways near the Canadian border.
The specific location suggests it is accessible via one of the forest's many lakes or river systems, requiring a non-motorized or small motorized boat, or a canoe, to reach. User experiences describe a navigation of a narrow stream with a fast-moving current and many rocks, indicating that the journey requires careful boat handling or even "walking the water passage and pulling the boat through." This detail is crucial for local users to understand: proper gear, including sturdy rubber boots for water passages, is a necessity. For those planning an extended trip, this site is known to be a convenient stop, with previous campers noting its proximity to other backcountry sites, including those leading all the way into the area of North Lake—an important geographical feature near the international border. This makes it a strategic location for those planning a longer, multi-day canoe and camping route.
Accessibility by road is limited to the nearest entry point, which would require a drive on the sometimes primitive and unpaved forest roads (such as the Gunflint or other backcountry trails) before launching a watercraft. This inherent remoteness is what preserves the site's exceptional natural quiet and unparalleled stargazing opportunities that Minnesota’s northern reaches are famous for.

No real rapids, just a narrow stream with many rocks. Made it through with the boat. Current moves very fast. Bring your rubber boots, it was easier to walk the water passage and pulling the boat through. On the way back, turn your boat backwards to slow yourself down. Campsite had a grill, 2 spots for a tent and a latrine. Last latrine we could find. We stopped at about 5 more campsites after. We made it all the way into North Lake, campsite hopping.
