Taylors Island Family Campgrounds About

Hello, fellow Marylanders! When you're seeking a camping experience, whether it's a nostalgic trip back to simpler times or a convenient base for a long-term stay on the beautiful Eastern Shore, you want to know exactly what to expect. Taylors Island Family Campgrounds, located on the picturesque Taylors Island, MD, offers a unique proposition. While its name might evoke images of bustling family fun and extensive amenities, recent feedback suggests a more nuanced reality that prospective campers, particularly those from Maryland, should understand.

This campground appears to lean towards an older, more established demographic, with a primary focus on "long term lease" sites. For those who remember a more "peaceful, desolate" Taylors Island from decades past, the current landscape of trailers and people marks a significant change. It's important to approach Taylors Island Family Campgrounds with realistic expectations, as it doesn't seem to be positioned as a resort-style destination packed with kid-centric activities or modern facilities. Instead, it seems to cater to a specific niche, possibly those looking for a quiet, long-term spot with bay views, and who are self-sufficient regarding entertainment and amenities.

This overview aims to provide a factual, balanced, and engaging look at Taylors Island Family Campgrounds, drawing directly from available public feedback. We will explore its serene island location, the types of services it offers, its features and highlights (including its notable "Good bay view"), and how to contact them. By providing this candid perspective, we hope to help you, as a local Maryland user, determine if this campground aligns with your vision for an Eastern Shore getaway.

Taylors Island Family Campgrounds is uniquely situated at 4362 Bay Shore Rd, Taylors Island, MD 21669, USA. This address places it directly on Taylors Island, a charming and somewhat remote peninsula in Dorchester County, Maryland, extending into the Chesapeake Bay. This location is a significant aspect of the campground's identity, offering a distinct Eastern Shore experience.

The accessibility of Taylors Island involves navigating scenic, often two-lane roads that wind through Dorchester County's flat farmlands and marshlands. While it's certainly reachable by vehicle, the journey itself contributes to the feeling of escaping the mainland's hustle and bustle. The island's inherent tranquility and proximity to the bay are key draws for those seeking a peaceful retreat.

The "Good bay view" is a primary highlight of its location, suggesting direct or easy access to vistas of the Chesapeake Bay. This is ideal for campers who enjoy waterfront scenery, sunsets over the bay, and the gentle sounds of the water. Being on an island means a closer connection to the aquatic environment, potentially offering opportunities for crabbing, fishing, or simply observing wildlife.

However, its island location also means a degree of remoteness. While there's an "ok" store on-site, extensive amenities, restaurants, or large grocery stores typically found in more populated areas would require a drive off the island. This makes the campground more suitable for self-sufficient campers who are prepared to either bring most of their supplies or are content with limited local options. For Marylanders looking for a true escape to a more traditional, less developed part of the Eastern Shore, the location of Taylors Island Family Campgrounds offers just that.

Taylors Island Family Campgrounds appears to offer a limited set of services, primarily catering to long-term stays rather than short-term vacationers seeking a wide array of amenities. Based on the provided feedback, here's an overview of the services you might find:

  • Campsites (Primarily for Long-Term Lease): The campground largely operates as "Older grounds for long term lease." This suggests that the majority of sites are occupied by seasonal or permanent residents who have leased their spots for extended periods. There are "Only a few sites to stay in" for short-term visitors, implying limited availability for transient campers.

  • General Store (Limited Stock): There is a "Store ok for stock." This indicates a basic convenience store on-site, likely offering essentials, snacks, and perhaps some camping supplies. However, it's not described as extensive or a major retail hub.

  • Bathrooms: Restroom facilities are available, though their condition is inconsistent, described as "Bathrooms need work... hit or miss for clean." This suggests that while facilities exist, their cleanliness and maintenance may vary, requiring campers to manage expectations or be prepared.

  • Owner's Focus (Wine Sales): A notable aspect mentioned by a reviewer is that the "Owner more worried about his wine sales." While this might imply a specific focus for the owner, it doesn't necessarily detract from fundamental camping services but points to the primary interest of the on-site store.

  • Bay Views: While not a "service" in the traditional sense, the "Good bay view" is a key natural feature that the campground's location provides, offering scenic enjoyment for residents and visitors alike.

What is explicitly NOT offered, or is significantly limited, includes:

  • No Kids Play Areas: "No kids play areas" indicates a lack of dedicated facilities for children's recreation, which is important for families to note.

  • No Swimming: "No swimming" explicitly states that there are no designated swimming facilities like a pool or safe beach access for swimming, which is a significant consideration for many campers.

  • No Lodging (Historically): An older review mentioned "No lodging!" from the 60s, suggesting that historically, the place was purely for camping, without cabins or other structures. While this might have changed with long-term trailers now on site, it reinforces the rustic nature.

Prospective campers should confirm specific services and their current condition directly with the campground prior to booking.

Taylors Island Family Campgrounds, while not a modern resort, offers a few distinct features and highlights that might appeal to a specific segment of Maryland campers, particularly those seeking simplicity, long-term stays, and natural beauty.

  • Good Bay View: This is a consistent highlight. The campground's location provides "Good bay view," offering picturesque scenery, especially during sunrise or sunset over the Chesapeake Bay. For those who appreciate natural vistas and waterfront tranquility, this is a significant draw.

  • Focus on Long-Term Lease Sites: While a deterrent for some, for individuals or families seeking a semi-permanent or seasonal base on the Eastern Shore, the availability of "long term lease" sites is a major feature. This allows for a settled community feel and the convenience of having a dedicated spot without the full commitment of property ownership.

  • Sense of Desolation/Peace (Historically): While not "untouched by mankind" as in the 60s, the island setting still offers a quieter, less developed atmosphere compared to more bustling coastal towns. This appeals to those who remember and seek a more "peaceful, desolate" environment, albeit with the presence of other trailers now.

  • Older, Established Grounds: For some campers, the "older grounds" might offer a sense of nostalgia or a preference for a less commercialized, more traditional camping feel. It suggests a history and perhaps a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere.

  • On-Site Store (Basic): The presence of an "ok" store for stock means campers don't have to leave the island for basic necessities, which can be convenient given the remote location.

  • Proximity to Nature: Being on Taylors Island means easy access to the natural environment of the Chesapeake Bay, potentially offering opportunities for bird watching, exploring the shoreline, or enjoying the unique ecosystem of the marshlands.

  • Unique Owner Focus (Wine Sales): While a quirky highlight, the owner's focus on "wine sales" might appeal to those who enjoy a glass of wine with their bay view, potentially offering a unique local product experience within the campground store.

It is crucial to acknowledge the reported significant drawbacks, such as the lack of kids' play areas, no swimming facilities, inconsistent bathroom cleanliness, and tight sites for short-term visitors. These aspects mean that the "highlights" are very specific to a camper who prioritizes quiet, long-term stays and natural views over recreational amenities and modern facilities.

Based on the provided customer reviews and the nature of Taylors Island Family Campgrounds as "older grounds for long term lease" with limited amenities, there are no specific, advertised "promotions or special offers" in the traditional sense. Campgrounds of this type generally focus on consistent pricing for long-term leases and limited nightly rates, rather than short-term promotional deals.

Therefore, for prospective campers in Maryland, the primary "offer" would be the opportunity for a long-term lease in a bay-view location, or one of the "few sites to stay in" for short visits.

To understand the financial aspects fully, prospective residents or campers should:

  • Contact Directly for Lease Information: The most crucial step is to contact Taylors Island Family Campgrounds directly to inquire about current long-term lease rates, availability, and specific terms. Given its focus on leases, this information is paramount. You can reach them at (410) 397-3275.

  • Inquire About Short-Term Site Availability and Rates: For those looking for a temporary stay, it's essential to ask about the "few sites to stay in," their nightly rates, and reservation procedures, as these are likely to be in high demand or have specific booking windows.

  • Understand Included Services vs. Extra Costs: Clarify what is included in the lease or nightly rate (e.g., utilities like water, electric, sewer, if any) and what additional costs might apply (e.g., specific waste disposal, propane refills, or any fees associated with the "wine sales" mentioned).

Since no explicit promotions are provided, the value of Taylors Island Family Campgrounds primarily stems from its unique location with bay views and its focus on long-term opportunities, rather than promotional discounts on extensive amenities.

For direct inquiries, reservations, or any additional information regarding Taylors Island Family Campgrounds, please use the following contact details:

  • Address: 4362 Bay Shore Rd, Taylors Island, MD 21669, USA

  • Phone: (410) 397-3275

  • Mobile Phone: +1 410-397-3275

It is highly recommended to contact the campground directly by phone to confirm current availability, especially for short-term sites, and to get the most up-to-date information on long-term lease options and pricing. Given the feedback on amenities and cleanliness, it would be prudent to ask specific questions about the current condition of facilities like the bathrooms and to clarify expectations regarding recreational options. Direct communication will help set realistic expectations for your visit.

For Maryland locals, Taylors Island Family Campgrounds offers a unique and suitable option, particularly for a niche group of campers. It is most fitting for those who are seeking a long-term or seasonal lease on the Eastern Shore, allowing them to establish a semi-permanent base with "Good bay view." This is ideal for retirees, remote workers, or families who frequently visit the area and prefer a consistent, dedicated spot to call their own, rather than constantly searching for new camping reservations.

The "peaceful, desolate" nature, as recalled from its past, still hints at a quieter environment compared to bustling family resorts. This makes it suitable for adults or couples who prioritize tranquility, scenic bay views, and perhaps simple activities like fishing or crabbing off the shore, rather than organized recreational programs or extensive amenities like pools and playgrounds. The presence of an "ok" on-site store provides basic convenience, reducing the need to leave the island for minor needs.

However, it's critical to understand that this campground is not designed for families with young children seeking a multitude of activities, as there are "no kids play areas" and "no swimming." Campers must also be prepared for potentially inconsistent bathroom cleanliness. For the self-sufficient camper who values a quiet, bay-front location and is looking for a long-term spot on the Eastern Shore, Taylors Island Family Campgrounds could be an excellent fit. It provides a genuine, no-frills escape to a beautiful, less commercialized part of Maryland, offering a very specific kind of authentic island living experience.

Not at all what I remembered from my childhood, in the 60's it was peaceful, desolate. No trailers, no people, just a wide beach with lots of driftwood. Untouched by mankind. No lodging!

Older grounds for long term lease. Only a few sites to stay in. No kids play areas or swimming. Bathrooms need work... hit or miss for clean. Store ok for stock. Owner more worried about his wine sales. Look elsewhere for more fun. Good bay view.

I had a great time fishing, the area outside to picnic with the kids is beautiful overlooking the bay. The restrooms were clean and well maintained. It is great to be able to take our dog with us. Everyone is friendly. The laundry area is a bonus and the stoe carries so many items. I love going there.

Disfunctional and unorganized business. Would not recommend. I booked a campsite 5 months in advance for a trip. I called closer to the date, just to confirm since they are low tech and don't offer online reservations or email confirmation. I called only to be told that they did not have me down and lost or didn't put me in their books.
