Paradise Grove Campground About
Hello, fellow Marylanders! Are you longing to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with nature in its purest form? If your idea of camping involves embracing the simplicity of the outdoors, with just the essentials at hand, then Paradise Grove Campground near Patuxent River might be the unique experience you've been searching for in Southern Maryland. This is not your typical resort-style campground with all the bells and whistles; instead, it offers a truly primitive and unvarnished camping adventure, ideal for those who appreciate a "no-frills" approach to spending time under the stars.
Paradise Grove Campground is designed for campers who are self-sufficient and enjoy a rustic setting. Here, you'll find the fundamental elements for a comfortable outdoor stay: a clean site, a fire ring for cozy campfires, and a picnic table for enjoying meals al fresco. Its location boasts great views and offers access to excellent fishing opportunities, making it a potentially rewarding spot for anglers and those who enjoy waterfront scenery. For many local campers, finding a straightforward, primitive campground like this is a breath of fresh air, allowing for a genuine immersion in the natural beauty of the Patuxent River area.
However, it's important to approach Paradise Grove Campground with realistic expectations. Reviews highlight specific characteristics that define the experience here, including its proximity to military flight paths, which results in noticeable noise from low-flying helicopters and the nearby flightline. Additionally, it operates without on-site restrooms or porta-potties, requiring campers to drive to the nearest facilities. These aspects mean that Paradise Grove is best suited for seasoned campers who prioritize scenic views, fishing, and a truly primitive environment over extensive amenities and absolute quiet. If you're an experienced outdoors enthusiast ready for a back-to-basics Maryland camping trip, read on to discover more about what Paradise Grove Campground has to offer.
Paradise Grove Campground is situated at MD-235, Patuxent River, MD 20670, USA. This location places it within St. Mary's County, a beautiful part of Southern Maryland known for its rich history, waterfront communities, and proximity to the Chesapeake Bay and Patuxent River. The campground's address on MD-235 indicates its direct accessibility from a state highway, making it relatively easy to find for those traveling by vehicle.
The accessibility of the campground means it's within reach for many Maryland residents, particularly those in the Southern Maryland region. From areas like Leonardtown, Lexington Park, or even Annapolis, the drive to Paradise Grove offers a journey through scenic rural and coastal landscapes. Its location near the Patuxent River also implies potential water access, which aligns with the reported excellent fishing opportunities.
However, a key aspect of its location that significantly impacts the camping experience is its proximity to the Naval Air Station Patuxent River (NAS Patuxent River). This is a major military installation, and as such, the campground is "a route of low helicopter flights," leading to considerable noise from aircraft. The "nearby flightline adds to the 'ambience'," meaning campers should expect the sounds of military aviation to be a regular feature of their stay. While this might be a deterrent for those seeking absolute tranquility, it's an important piece of factual information about the site's environment.
Despite the noise, the location provides good views, likely of the Patuxent River or surrounding natural areas, and certainly offers access to good fishing. This blend of primitive camping with unique ambient sounds and natural beauty defines the experience at Paradise Grove, making its location a crucial part of its identity. For local residents, understanding this proximity to military operations is key to managing expectations for their stay.
Paradise Grove Campground operates as a primitive camping area, meaning it offers only the most basic services and amenities. This approach is geared towards campers who are largely self-sufficient and prefer a back-to-basics outdoor experience.
-
Clean Primitive Campsites: The core service provided is a clean, designated campsite. Visitors consistently describe it as a "clean primitive campground," indicating that the individual sites are well-maintained in terms of tidiness.
-
Fire Rings: Each campsite is equipped with a fire ring. This essential amenity allows campers to safely build campfires for warmth, cooking, and ambiance, which is a cornerstone of the traditional camping experience.
-
Picnic Tables: A picnic table is provided at each site, offering a convenient surface for dining, food preparation, or simply gathering with fellow campers.
-
Fishing Access: While not a direct service in the sense of providing gear or guides, the campground's location offers "good fishing." This implies that the site provides access points or proximity to waters where fishing is a viable and rewarding activity for campers who bring their own equipment and licenses.
-
Walking Trails (Limited): There are "a few walking Trails" available. This suggests opportunities for short walks or strolls within or immediately adjacent to the campground, allowing campers to explore the surrounding natural environment on foot.
It is critical to note what services are explicitly not provided, as highlighted by reviews:
-
No On-Site Restrooms/Porta-Potties: A significant point of feedback is the complete absence of on-site restroom facilities. Visitors report "no porta potty, and the nearest bathroom is a drive." This means campers must either be prepared with their own portable sanitation solutions or plan for regular drives to off-site facilities, which is a major consideration for anyone planning a stay.
-
No Amenities Requiring Staff (e.g., showers, specific services): As a primitive campground, it does not offer amenities like showers, laundry facilities, or a camp store. Campers need to come fully prepared with all their necessities.
Understanding these limitations is crucial for prospective campers to ensure Paradise Grove meets their expectations for a primitive camping experience.
Paradise Grove Campground, while operating on a primitive model, offers several distinct features and highlights that appeal to a specific type of camper, particularly those who appreciate natural beauty and a rustic approach to the outdoors.
-
Primitive Camping Experience: The very nature of the campground is its primary highlight for those seeking a true back-to-basics adventure. It provides a stripped-down camping experience, free from the distractions of modern amenities, allowing for a deeper connection with nature. This appeals to seasoned campers who prefer simplicity.
-
Great Views: Visitors consistently mention "Great views" as a positive aspect of the campground. This suggests scenic surroundings, potentially overlooking the Patuxent River or other natural landscapes, offering a picturesque backdrop for your outdoor stay.
-
Excellent Fishing Opportunities: The presence of "good fishing" is a significant draw for anglers. The location likely provides convenient access to productive fishing spots in the Patuxent River, known for its diverse fish populations. This feature alone can make the trip worthwhile for fishing enthusiasts.
-
Secluded, Natural Setting (mostly): Despite the noise from military flights, the core of the campground offers a natural and relatively secluded environment. Without extensive facilities, the focus remains on the landscape, making it ideal for those who want to feel truly immersed in the outdoors.
-
Fire Rings and Picnic Tables: The inclusion of these fundamental camping amenities at each site ensures that campers have the basics for cooking, dining, and enjoying campfires, which are integral to the camping experience.
-
Walking Trails: The existence of "a few walking Trails" provides opportunities for light exploration and enjoying the immediate natural surroundings on foot, adding a gentle recreational option.
-
Proximity to Military Base (Unique Experience): While the noise is a drawback for some, for others, the proximity to NAS Patuxent River and the sight of "low helicopter flights" could be viewed as a unique, interesting, or even exciting aspect of the experience. It offers a distinct "ambiance" not found at typical campgrounds, providing a glimpse into active military operations.
-
Cost-Effectiveness (Implied): While pricing is not provided, primitive campgrounds often offer a more budget-friendly camping option compared to full-service campgrounds or resorts, which could be a highlight for cost-conscious campers.
It is important to reiterate that while the primitive nature is a highlight for some, the lack of restrooms and the presence of aircraft noise are significant features that define the experience and should be considered by all prospective campers.
Based on the provided information and the nature of "primitive campgrounds," it is highly unlikely that Paradise Grove Campground offers any specific "promotions or special offers" in the traditional sense. Primitive campgrounds typically operate on a straightforward, often minimal, fee structure per night or per site, without the marketing incentives seen at larger, amenity-rich campgrounds or resorts.
As a general rule, primitive campgrounds focus on providing basic access to natural areas, and their pricing reflects the limited services rather than promotional discounts. There is no public information suggesting any loyalty programs, seasonal discounts, or "buy one night, get one free" type of offers for Paradise Grove Campground.
Therefore, prospective campers should anticipate paying a standard, likely modest, fee per night for a campsite. It is always advisable to:
-
Contact Directly: Although no phone number was explicitly provided in the initial data for the campground itself, if one becomes available through other public sources (such as a managing park system or local government office), direct inquiry would be the only way to confirm any pricing or fee structures. Given its nature as a potentially public or quasi-public primitive site, information might be found through local park and recreation departments for St. Mary's County or state natural resources agencies.
-
Check Official Sources: If Paradise Grove Campground is managed by a state park system, a county parks department, or a similar public entity, their official website would be the most reliable source for current fees, reservation policies, and any rare promotions they might run (e.g., free entrance days to state parks, which may or may not apply to specific campgrounds within them).
Without specific contact information for reservations or management, the expectation should be that the "offer" is simply access to a primitive, clean campsite with a fire ring and picnic table, at a standard rate. Campers seeking value should focus on the inherent low cost of primitive camping rather than expecting promotional deals.
Based on the provided information, the direct contact information for Paradise Grove Campground is limited to its address. No specific phone number was included in the provided data that directly connects to the campground's management or a reservation line for Paradise Grove Campground.

Address: MD-235, Patuxent River, MD 20670, USA
Given that primitive campgrounds are often managed by a broader park system or local government entity, direct contact information for reservations or inquiries might be found through:
-
St. Mary's County Department of Recreation & Parks: As the campground is located in St. Mary's County, contacting their parks department would be a logical first step to inquire about booking, fees, and specific policies for Paradise Grove Campground. Their contact details would typically be available on the St. Mary's County government website.
-
Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR): If the campground is part of a state park or natural resource area, the Maryland DNR website would provide relevant contact and reservation information.
-
Local Tourism Boards: The St. Mary's County or Southern Maryland tourism boards might also have information or direct contact details for local camping sites.
It is highly recommended to seek out these broader organizational contacts to obtain accurate and up-to-date information regarding Paradise Grove Campground before planning a visit, especially given the lack of on-site facilities mentioned in reviews.
For Maryland locals, Paradise Grove Campground offers a distinct and potentially appealing option, particularly if your camping philosophy aligns with a more rugged, authentic outdoor experience. This isn't the place for resort amenities or absolute tranquility, but that's precisely why it might be perfectly suitable for a specific type of Maryland camper.
Firstly, for those residing in Southern Maryland, its location on MD-235 in Patuxent River means a convenient, relatively short drive for a weekend escape. You don't have to venture far to feel truly immersed in nature, which is a significant advantage for quick getaways. The "great views" and "good fishing" opportunities highlight its suitability for anglers and those who appreciate waterfront scenery, providing a local spot to pursue these popular outdoor activities.
The "primitive" nature of the campground is a key factor in its suitability. For experienced Maryland campers who own their gear, are comfortable with self-sufficiency, and perhaps even prefer to avoid crowded, amenity-heavy sites, Paradise Grove offers a refreshing alternative. It’s ideal for those who value a clean fire ring and a picnic table over flush toilets and paved paths. This aligns with a desire for a genuine connection to the natural environment, where the focus is on the campfire, the stars, and the sounds of the surrounding area.
The presence of "a few walking Trails" also provides a simple way to explore the immediate vicinity, catering to those who enjoy a leisurely stroll in nature. While the helicopter noise is a notable characteristic, for some locals, especially those with an interest in aviation or military operations, it could even be a unique point of interest rather than a deterrent. It certainly contributes to a distinct "ambience" that sets it apart from other campgrounds.
In conclusion, Paradise Grove Campground is highly suitable for Marylanders seeking a truly primitive, no-frills camping adventure. It's for those who prioritize excellent fishing, scenic views, and a return to basics over extensive amenities and absolute quiet. If you're an experienced camper looking for a convenient, local spot to enjoy the raw beauty of Southern Maryland's outdoors, Paradise Grove offers a unique opportunity to pitch your tent, light a fire, and immerse yourself in a different kind of natural symphony.
Customer Reviews
Clean primitive campground with a fire ring and-picnic table. Great views good fishing a few walking Trails.
The campground is a route of low helicopter flights, so it's LOUD, plus the nearby flightline adds to the "ambience". There are no porta potty, and the nearest bathroom is a drive. I can't believe they even allowed people to camp here knowing there is no peace and relative quiet.
5-star camping. Quiet, clean, and safe campsite. Right on the water. Bring your water device: kayaks, canoes, paddle boards. Sites accessible to the bay. Fishing permitted with license. No running water - bring your own. 2 porta-potties on site. Fresh water cold showers available about 3 mins away by car. The marina rents paddle boards and kayaks...will drop off at site. 100% enjoyable. I'd return in the future. Some sites are on slopes so those are not good for pitching a tent.
Please add another porta potty in Paradise Grove campground. One is not enough to use when there are plenty of people camping in the summer
