Goose Creek Campground About
For those in Maryland seeking a tranquil and well-equipped outdoor escape, look no further than Goose Creek Campground. Nestled within the Naval Air Station Patuxent River (NAS Patuxent River), this military campground offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature, enjoy the waterfront, and access a host of recreational amenities. Whether you're a seasoned RVer or prefer the simplicity of tent camping, Goose Creek provides a welcoming environment for authorized users.
Goose Creek Campground is more than just a place to park your RV or pitch a tent; it’s a community-focused destination designed to offer relaxation and recreation. Its location on the Patuxent River provides scenic views and a serene atmosphere, allowing campers to unwind from the stresses of daily life. This campground caters to military personnel, retirees, Department of Defense employees, and their families, ensuring a secure and well-maintained experience.
Imagine waking up to the sounds of nature, with the Patuxent River just a stone's throw away. Spend your days exploring the nearby base beach, enjoying a round of golf, or simply relaxing at your campsite. While there is aircraft noise during working hours due to its base location, many visitors find the peaceful evenings and proximity to various amenities make it a worthwhile trade-off for a truly convenient and accessible camping experience right here in Southern Maryland. Goose Creek Campground offers a blend of natural beauty and practical facilities, making it an ideal choice for your next local adventure.
Goose Creek Campground is strategically located within the Naval Air Station Patuxent River (NAS Patuxent River) in Patuxent River, MD 20670, USA. This placement is key to understanding its accessibility and target audience. As a military campground, access is generally restricted to active duty military personnel, reservists, retired military members, 0-100% DAV (Disabled American Veterans), Purple Heart recipients, former POWs, veteran caregivers, and Department of Defense civilians. It is not openly accessible to the general public without prior authorization or sponsorship.
The specific address within the base is important for navigation, and visitors should be aware that the primary method of reaching the campground involves entering NAS Patuxent River. It's often advised to confirm the exact check-in procedures with the Community Recreation Office, as some sources indicate reservations and check-in might occur at the Base Marina Bldg 1599.
Despite the controlled access, its location offers significant advantages. The campground is situated on the banks of the Patuxent River, providing direct waterfront access and views. It is also notably close to the base beach and the golf course, offering convenient access to these popular recreational facilities. While some reviews mention that certain campsite locations offer better views than others, the overall proximity to these key attractions enhances the camping experience. Visitors should be prepared for potential aircraft noise during standard working hours due to the active nature of the naval air station, though this typically subsides outside of these periods. The campground operates seasonally, generally from February 1 to October 31, allowing for camping throughout much of the year's pleasant weather.
Goose Creek Campground provides a range of services and facilities designed to make your camping experience comfortable and enjoyable. As a Navy Getaways location, it focuses on providing essential amenities for both RV and tent campers. Here's a breakdown of what you can expect:
- RV Sites: The campground offers dedicated RV sites, with some equipped with partial hook-ups, including water and 30-amp electric service. There are approximately 14-25 RV sites available, capable of accommodating RVs generally between 30-40 feet.
- Tent Camping Sites: For those who prefer a more traditional camping experience, primitive tent sites are available. Some of these sites are waterfront, offering scenic views. There are approximately 14-20 primitive tent/RV sites, some without water or electric hook-ups.
- Bathhouse: A main bathhouse is available on-site, providing showers and toilets, ensuring campers have access to clean and convenient restroom facilities.
- Porta-Potties: In addition to the main bathhouse, porta-potties are appropriately dispersed throughout the site for added convenience, particularly for tent campers or those on larger loops.
- Picnic Areas: Many sites include picnic tables and fire rings, perfect for outdoor meals and campfires.
- Grill Areas: Designated areas for grilling are available, allowing campers to prepare their own food.
- Pet-Friendly: The campground is pet-friendly, allowing furry companions to join your camping adventure, typically with leash and clean-up rules in place.
- Boat Launch: As it's located on the Patuxent River, a boat launch is available for those wishing to enjoy boating or fishing on the river.
- Dump Station: A dump station is typically available for RV campers, though some reviews suggest it might be located a short distance away (e.g., almost 2 miles from some sites), so planning for this is advisable.
- Access to Base Amenities: Campers benefit from proximity to various other on-base amenities, which may include a golf course, beach access, and potentially other MWR facilities like fitness centers or recreational areas.
Goose Creek Campground offers several standout features that enhance the camping experience for its authorized patrons:
- Strategic Waterfront Location: Situated directly on the Patuxent River, the campground provides picturesque views and opportunities for waterside activities like fishing and boating. The tranquil river setting offers a peaceful escape.
- Proximity to Base Beach and Golf Course: A significant advantage for visitors is the walking distance access to the base beach and the on-base golf course. This allows for diverse recreational options without needing to drive off-base.
- Variety of Site Types: Goose Creek caters to different camping preferences with both RV sites (some with water and electric hook-ups) and primitive tent sites, including desirable waterfront options. This flexibility allows campers to choose the experience that best suits them.
- Essential Comfort Facilities: The presence of a main bathhouse with showers and toilets, along with dispersed porta-potties, ensures that even primitive campers have access to necessary facilities, contributing to a more comfortable stay.
- Pet-Friendly Policy: For many campers, the ability to bring their pets is a crucial feature. Goose Creek welcomes pets, allowing families to enjoy their outdoor adventures together.
- Secure and Maintained Environment: Being part of NAS Patuxent River, the campground benefits from the security and upkeep standards of a military installation. This often translates to a cleaner, safer, and more orderly camping environment.
- Seasonal Operation: The campground's operating season from February 1 to October 31 allows for camping during the most pleasant months in Maryland, covering spring, summer, and fall.
- Community-Oriented Atmosphere: As a military campground, it often fosters a sense of community among patrons, making it a welcoming place for those connected to the armed forces.
As a military campground managed under Navy MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation), Goose Creek Campground primarily offers rates and opportunities tailored to its authorized users rather than public promotions. While specific seasonal discounts or last-minute deals might occur, these are typically communicated directly through official MWR channels or upon inquiry.
The core "special offer" of Goose Creek Campground is its affordable pricing and exclusive access for eligible patrons, which includes active duty military, reservists, retired military, 0-100% DAV, Purple Heart recipients, former POWs, veteran caregivers, and DoD civilians. For these groups, the rates are generally more competitive than comparable public campgrounds in the region. For instance, RV sites with water and 30A electric may range from $15.75 - $21 daily, with weekly and monthly rates also available, while primitive sites are even more affordable.
To inquire about current rates, any potential short-term promotions, or specific eligibility requirements, it is essential to contact the campground directly. The most reliable method is to call the phone number provided or visit the NAS Patuxent River MWR website. Reservations can typically be made up to one year in advance for active duty personnel and six months in advance for all other authorized users, which can be seen as a benefit for planning ahead and securing desirable spots, especially during peak seasons. While there aren't widely advertised "promotions" in the commercial sense, the value and access provided to the military community serve as a consistent benefit.

Customer Reviews
Stone locations are better than others as far as view. Great location for base beach and golf course. Ended up leaving a couple days early because camp spot was boring.
Nice and cozy. I tent camped on a Thursday and Friday night. The main bathhouse has showers and toilets but there's also porta-potties appropriately dispersed throughout the site. Expect tons of aircraft noise during working hours, but not so much otherwise.
We always enjoy our time here. It's quiet and relaxing, I love watching and listening to the eagles that reside there!
Beautiful campsite with clean facilities and abundant wildlife. Very peaceful.
Nice setup, location and it is quiet. Site is mostly flat and roomy, but water and electric service are placed in a place that required us to set up on an angle otherwise our 25' water and electric would not reach. No sewer hook-ups on sites, but bath house is nearby and clean. Pump out station is almost 2 miles away.
