Greetings, fellow Floridians and outdoor enthusiasts! Then look no further than TCAS Camping, nestled within the magnificent Kissimmee Prairie State Park. This isn't just another campground; it's an immersive wilderness experience, offering a unique opportunity to explore one of our state's most vital and expansive ecosystems. As locals, we understand the desire to find those hidden gems that allow us to truly disconnect and appreciate the natural wonders right in our own backyard, and TCAS Camping delivers that in spades.
Imagine waking up to the sounds of nature, with 54,000 acres of sprawling prairie stretching out before you, inviting exploration. Kissimmee Prairie State Park is famous for being Florida's first International Dark Sky Park, meaning the celestial show above after sunset is simply unparalleled. It’s a place where dedicated mountain bikers can tackle challenging soft trails, and casual cruisers can enjoy the main roads winding through the vast campground. You might spot deer, turkeys, and hawks right from your campsite, reminding you that you are truly in their domain. Whether you're a seasoned equestrian looking for miles of riding trails, a tent camper seeking quiet solitude, or an RV enthusiast wanting a spacious site with a touch of the wild, TCAS Camping offers a diverse range of experiences. Let’s explore what makes this local treasure an absolute must-visit for your next Florida adventure, despite a few common challenges like mosquitos and the occasional hot bathroom – small prices to pay for such profound natural beauty.
TCAS Camping is located at 192nd Street, Kissimmee Prairie State Park, FL 34999, USA. This places it deep within the expansive 54,000-acre Kissimmee Prairie State Park, situated in the vast dry prairie region of Florida. While the address might seem straightforward, accessing the campground involves a journey that adds to its secluded and immersive feel. The park itself is located approximately 32 miles northwest of Okeechobee. Typically, visitors would travel north on U.S. 441 from Okeechobee to County Road 724, turn west, and continue to the end of County Road 724 before turning north onto NW 192nd Ave. The preserve entrance is then about five miles further, with the park office and the main campgrounds located another five miles north inside the preserve. It’s important to note that a significant portion of this final drive within the park is on gravel roads. While accessible for most vehicles, a "beautiful slow drive" is often recommended due to the road conditions and the chance to spot wildlife. This remoteness is a deliberate feature, contributing significantly to the park's status as an International Dark Sky Park, ensuring minimal light pollution for an incredible stargazing experience. The park is generally open from 8:00 a.m. until sunset daily, 365 days a year, with registered campers or those with after-hours passes permitted entry after dark, providing a secure and peaceful environment for all.
As part of the Florida State Parks system, TCAS Camping at Kissimmee Prairie State Park offers standard state park discounts and opportunities that benefit Florida residents and frequent visitors. Specific, limited-time promotional offers are rare for state park campgrounds, but the following are consistently available:
It is always recommended to check the official Florida State Parks website or contact the TCAS Camping office directly at (772) 460-5264 for the most up-to-date information on fees, availability, and any specific policies.
For us Floridians, TCAS Camping within Kissimmee Prairie State Park represents a truly invaluable resource, offering an unparalleled opportunity to connect with the authentic heart of our state's natural environment. In a region often characterized by its bustling coastal cities and world-renowned attractions, this park stands out as a sanctuary of vast, unspoiled wilderness, easily accessible yet feeling wonderfully remote. The fact that it's Florida's first International Dark Sky Park is a profound draw; for locals, it’s a unique chance to witness a night sky as it was meant to be seen, without the light pollution that obscures our urban views. This alone makes it an essential experience for anyone living in our state, offering a celestial spectacle that is both humbling and awe-inspiring.
Beyond the stargazing, TCAS Camping caters to a diverse range of outdoor pursuits that resonate deeply with local interests. Whether you're an avid equestrian with a passion for trail riding, a dedicated hiker or mountain biker seeking extensive paths through unique ecosystems, or a family simply looking to introduce children to the wonders of Florida's wildlife – from deer and turkeys to various raptors – this park has it all. The sheer size of 54,000 acres ensures plenty of room to stretch your legs and find your own quiet corner, fostering a sense of peace and privacy that is increasingly rare. While challenges like active mosquitos at dusk or warm bathroom facilities might exist, these are often seen as minor trade-offs for the profound natural beauty and tranquility on offer. The friendly and helpful staff further enhance the experience, ensuring a safe and informed visit. For Floridians, TCAS Camping isn't just a place to visit; it’s a cherished natural heritage, offering a vital escape to refresh the spirit and reconnect with the wild, beautiful essence of our home state.

Beautiful clean campground with lots of room to stretch your legs. 54,000 acres with trails going all over the place. We came for the weekend and want to come back for a week. Turkey, deer and hawks all day directly in front of our camp site, we had read in reviews that you needed dedicated mountain bikes as the trails are soft, they are soft but the main roads would be perfect for beach cruisers and much easier to roam the campgrounds
May 24, 2021 · Jason MooreMy wife and I have just returned home after spending 2 nights at the Equestrian Campsite. Probably due to the heat with temperature of over 90 degrees, we were a bit disappointed not seeing much wildlife, only two deer, some squirrels and some crows in all. It was also cloudy in both nights that we could not even find one single star in the sky. Our first night was very hot and sticky, while our second night was about 5 degrees cooler after a downpour in the late afternoon. There were only about 4 sites including us occupied at our campsite. Very quiet at night. Mosquitos were very active as soon as the sun started setting till morning and we had to take shelter in our tent early as 8pm. All the staffs were very friendly. The lady checked us in at the registration office was very nice and she briefed us carefully to make sure things we needed to know. We also felt very safe seeing the lady doing rounds in a truck checking from time to time. A big drawback was the bathrooms. The size and privacy feeling of the bathrooms was excellent. However, there was absolutely no feeling of any ventilation inside the bathrooms, though there were 2 loud machines at the exterior wall appeared to be exhaust fans. Not only it was unhealthy, but also in fact dangerous especially during these years. The skylight in the bathroom probably have made it worse because of the heat from the sunlight. I would say the temperature inside the bathroom at least over 90 degrees. It just compared to when I was in the attic of my house in summer. Adding to the unbearable heat, there was only very hot water in the shower. When I came out of the bathroom, I felt like I have just come out of a sauna room literally. Unless something have done over this, the highest ratings I could give to this campsite is 4-star.
Aug 26, 2022 · Kim LVery little known site / area but worth the trip. Lots of great trails and no restriction for mountain bikers! Keep in mind there is a lot of sand here so much of the going is tough. Nights are totally awesome, key area for stargazers. Deer, gaters, herons are concentrated in the sloughs and fun in the evenings to watch the game come in. This is total peace!

Oct 29, 2018 · KENDRA LEEPIf you want nature and the beauty of wet and dry prairies in one stay....this is the place. Just a mile away from camping 🏕 are massive gators, different species of snakes. Just around and in the camping 🏕 area squirrels, bunnies, turkeys, Crested Caracara, all kinds of rare and beautiful birds. At night, the stars and Aneta are ripe for the watch. If you don't have a scope, your eyes will be fine. 24 hr round the clock beauty. You can't go wrong.
