Hey there, Florida adventurers! Are you a local who loves getting off the beaten path, truly immersing yourself in nature, and leaving the digital world behind for a bit? If so, then the Town of KICCO Campsite is a destination you absolutely need to know about. Tucked away in River Ranch, this isn't your typical resort-style campground with all the bells and whistles. Instead, KICCO offers a refreshingly primitive and authentic "Old Florida" experience, allowing you to connect with the raw beauty of our state's heartland.
Imagine waking up to the peaceful sounds of the Kissimmee River flowing gently nearby, the rustle of leaves, and the calls of native wildlife. This is a place where you can truly unplug, leaving behind the constant notifications and the demands of modern life. It's a sanctuary for those who appreciate simplicity, wide-open spaces, and the chance to forge their own adventure. Whether you're an experienced primitive camper, an RV enthusiast seeking a quiet spot, or a family looking to introduce your kids to the joys of roughing it (in a comfortable way!), Town of KICCO Campsite delivers. Its serene atmosphere, combined with ample opportunities for hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing, makes it a unique and invaluable local resource. Let’s dive deeper into what makes this hidden gem so special and why it should be on your Florida camping bucket list.
The Town of KICCO Campsite is nestled in River Ranch, FL 33867, USA. Its charm lies in its "out of the grid" location, providing a genuine escape from urban sprawl. While it’s part of the larger KICCO Wildlife Management Area (WMA), accessing the campsite involves a deliberate journey that adds to its secluded appeal. To reach KICCO, you'll typically drive through a portion of the Westgate River Ranch Resort and Rodeo area. Don't be surprised by the initial resort surroundings; the primitive campsite is distinct and further along. Reviewers note a "beautiful slow drive in about 9 miles on a dirt road past River Ranch," indicating that patience and a vehicle suitable for unpaved roads are beneficial. The entrance to KICCO WMA usually requires a locked gate, and the combination code is provided with your online reservation and Special Use License (SUL) from the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD). This controlled access helps maintain the tranquility and natural integrity of the area, ensuring that only those with a permit can enter. The site itself is positioned right on the Kissimmee River, offering scenic views and easy access to fishing spots. While it feels wonderfully remote, it's a manageable drive for many Floridians looking for a true wilderness experience without venturing too far from home.
The Town of KICCO Campsite, as part of the KICCO Wildlife Management Area (WMA) managed by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD), operates under a specific permitting system rather than traditional commercial promotions. The primary "offer" is the free access and camping, making it an incredibly valuable resource for outdoor enthusiasts. Here’s what’s relevant:
Always ensure you obtain your Special Use License and gate combination well in advance of your trip, as cellular service can be spotty in the area, and the SFWMD office operates during business hours.
For Floridians, the Town of KICCO Campsite is more than just a place to set up camp; it’s an invaluable opportunity to reconnect with the roots of our state's natural heritage. In a state known for its vibrant cities and popular attractions, KICCO stands as a testament to Florida’s wild, untamed beauty. Its primitive nature means it’s not for everyone, but for those of us who cherish simplicity, solitude, and genuine outdoor experiences, it's an absolute treasure. As locals, we understand the increasing value of places where we can truly unplug – where cell service is spotty, and the only sounds are those of the wind, the river, and wildlife. This allows for a deeper level of relaxation and a true escape from the daily grind.
The fact that camping here is free with a readily available permit from the South Florida Water Management District makes it an accessible and budget-friendly option for weekend getaways or longer expeditions. Whether you're an avid angler keen to fish the Kissimmee River, a passionate hiker ready to explore miles of untouched trails, or an RVer looking for a unique boondocking experience away from crowded parks, KICCO delivers. It's a place where you can teach your children about self-reliance, observe Florida's diverse ecosystems firsthand, and witness stunning sunrises and sunsets over expansive prairies. This "out of the grid" location, while requiring a bit of a drive on dirt roads, contributes to its unspoiled charm and ensures a truly peaceful environment. Embracing the primitive nature of Town of KICCO Campsite allows Floridians to appreciate the raw, authentic side of our state, reminding us of the incredible natural wonders that lie just beyond our suburban edges. It’s a call back to a simpler time, offering an unforgettable and restorative experience right here in our own backyard.
Beautiful campground, out of the grid. There is a calm river next to the campground, nice spot to fish. There are many trails to hike. Plenty of space to camp. It's a primitive campground, so take water and the essentials.
Jan 02, 2024 · Adriano FlechillaGreat spot! Primitive camping, RVs ok. Free reservation made online. No amenities cell service is spotty. I will certainly come back. Beautiful slow drive in about 9 miles on a dirt road past River ranch. Great spot right on the Kissimmee river
Feb 13, 2024 · Carmen ManninoGreat campground with a few spots right on the water. The water was right outside our 40' class A. Great trails for biking. Alligators nearby so watch your small pets. A couple spots have fire rings and grills. The road has a small section of bumpy wash board dirt road but the rest is decent. It is several miles from gate to campground. No water, electric, or dump stations. 2 bars 4 G with at&t cell service, can stream video.
Feb 13, 2021 · Adrienne YoungJust what we expected. It is very remote and quite a long drive back to the camping area, but we loved the quite secluded dry camping. Saw many alligators and enjoyed riding bikes on the dirt roads.
Mar 28, 2022 · Suzie EllingsonEntrace to the WMA is via the River Ranch resort entrance. Then frist right immediately after the Tee-Pee rooms. Area is working land with cattle and honey bees. Town of Kicco campsite is nice and it is furthest from entrance. But because it allows RV and larger travel trailers you get big(er) crowds on the weekends. Due to the big crowds there is more of a mess from left behind gear and trash. Great dark nights with bright stars, and lots of wildlife.
