Turkey Hollow Campground About

Introduction / Overview

For Ohio residents seeking a genuine escape into nature, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, Turkey Hollow Campground in Millersburg offers a unique and authentic primitive camping experience. Nestled amidst the serene landscapes of Ohio's countryside, this campground is designed for those who appreciate simplicity, seclusion, and the raw beauty of the outdoors. While it embraces a primitive style, recent updates have introduced thoughtful additions like power poles and additional water spigots, enhancing comfort without detracting from the rustic charm. It's a perfect destination for self-sufficient campers who are looking for a quiet, restful night under the stars, complete with the crackling of a campfire and the tranquility of a secluded setting. Whether you're an avid cyclist exploring the challenging local roads, a couple seeking a private retreat, or a small group ready for a peaceful night, Turkey Hollow provides the ideal backdrop for making cherished outdoor memories in Ohio.

Location and Accessibility

Turkey Hollow Campground is beautifully situated at 7836 Township Rd 102, Millersburg, OH 44654, USA. This address places it squarely within Ohio's renowned Amish Country, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural experiences. While the location provides wonderful views from the hollow up to the road, it's important for prospective campers to be aware of the approach. If you're coming from the direction of SR62, the road leading to the campground can be quite rough, with steep hills that might be challenging for heavily loaded vehicles or bikes. One reviewer noted that on a bike, it was "more than a little hard," requiring pushing the bike up most of the half-mile incline from SR62. However, there's a paved road leading from the opposite direction of SR62, offering a smoother, albeit still hilly, approach.

Despite some challenging sections, the secluded nature of the campground is part of its charm. It ensures a private and quiet experience, making the journey well worth the effort for those seeking genuine tranquility. Campers are advised to plan their route carefully and consider the capabilities of their vehicle, particularly if hauling a trailer or RV, as the entrance involves "dirt switchbacks" and the campground is explicitly listed as "primitive camping only" for good reason. Its location in Millersburg means it's still within reach of local amenities and attractions for resupply or exploration.

Services Offered

Turkey Hollow Campground, while primarily primitive, offers essential services designed to enhance the camping experience for self-sufficient individuals and groups. These services focus on providing necessary amenities without over-developing the natural setting:

  • Electric Hookups: A significant recent update for fall 2024 is the addition of power poles at sites, providing campers with electricity. This is a considerable enhancement for a primitive campground, allowing for the charging of devices, running small lights, or powering CPAP machines.
  • Water Access: There is a water tap with good, potable water available, ensuring campers have access to fresh drinking water. Reviews indicate an additional water spigot has also been added, improving accessibility.
  • Porta John Outhouse: For restroom facilities, a clean Porta John is available and conveniently located a short walk from the campsites.
  • Firewood for Sale: The campground offers firewood for sale, allowing campers to easily enjoy bonfires and cook s'mores without needing to transport their own supply. Fire rings are also provided at each site.
  • Fire Rings: Each campsite is equipped with a fire ring, facilitating safe and enjoyable campfires for cooking and warmth.
  • Secluded Sites: The primary service is the provision of private and secluded campsites, offering campers ample space and a sense of solitude.
  • On-Site Host (Matt): Customer reviews highlight the hospitality of the host, Matt, who is on hand to assist campers and ensure a pleasant stay.
  • Pond: While primarily for aesthetics and potentially fishing (though sometimes affected by algae), there is a pond on the property, adding to the natural scenery.

It is important to note that while electric hookups are now present, the campground largely retains its primitive nature, meaning full RV hookups (water, sewer) are not available directly at sites.

Features / Highlights

Turkey Hollow Campground stands out for several key features and highlights that appeal to specific types of campers:

  • Newly Added Electric Hookups: The significant update of power poles makes Turkey Hollow unique for a "primitive" campground, offering the convenience of electricity where it might not typically be expected. This caters to a broader range of campers who need power for medical devices, charging, or comfort.
  • True Seclusion and Privacy: Reviewers consistently praise the "private and secluded" nature of the campsites. This is a major draw for those looking to escape crowded campgrounds and enjoy genuine peace and quiet.
  • Rustic Charm with Essential Amenities: It strikes a balance between being truly primitive and offering necessary comforts like fresh water, a clean Porta John, and fire rings, making it accessible to those who appreciate simplicity.
  • Beautiful Natural Views: The location provides "wonderful set of views from the hollow up to the road," contributing to a picturesque and serene camping environment.
  • Firewood Availability: The convenience of having firewood for sale on-site means campers don't have to haul their own, simplifying the campfire experience.
  • Friendly and Helpful Host: The host, Matt, receives commendation for his hospitality, which significantly enhances the camper experience by providing assistance and a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Affordable Pricing: Despite a recent increase, the pricing is noted as "still very reasonable," making it an attractive option for budget-conscious campers.
  • Hipcamp Booking Option: The ability to book and pay via Hipcamp offers modern convenience for reservations.
  • Wildlife Presence (Raccoons): While a minor consideration, the active raccoon population is a natural feature, reminding campers to secure their food and trash, adding to the authentic outdoor experience.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a privately run, smaller primitive campground, Turkey Hollow Campground may not feature extensive, regularly advertised promotions in the same way larger commercial campgrounds or state parks might. However, based on the provided information, potential "offers" or value points include:

  • Reasonable Pricing: Even with a reported price increase from 2020 to 2024, the pricing is still highlighted as "very reasonable." This inherent affordability serves as an ongoing value proposition.
  • Value-Added Amenities: The recent addition of electric hookups and an extra water spigot without a significant jump in pricing relative to the enhanced convenience could be considered a value-add for campers.
  • Seasonal Availability/Demand: While not a direct "promotion," primitive campgrounds like Turkey Hollow may have higher availability or potentially more flexible booking for off-peak seasons (early spring, late fall), offering a quieter experience and sometimes better rates if pricing fluctuates seasonally.
  • Direct Booking Benefits: While Hipcamp is an option, sometimes contacting the owner directly for multi-night stays or group bookings might yield a personalized arrangement, although this is not guaranteed and would need direct inquiry.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information on pricing, availability, and any potential special arrangements, it is always best to contact Turkey Hollow Campground directly or check their listing on booking platforms like Hipcamp.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

Turkey Hollow Campground in Millersburg, Ohio, is an ideal destination for local residents seeking an authentic and accessible outdoor experience for several compelling reasons. Firstly, its location in the heart of Ohio's Amish Country provides a uniquely serene backdrop. For Ohioans, this means a relatively short drive from many urban centers leads to a completely different pace of life, offering a genuine mental and physical reset away from the daily grind. The scenic views and the quiet of the hollow are a refreshing change for those looking to reconnect with nature without venturing too far from home.

Secondly, Turkey Hollow strikes a perfect balance between primitive camping and subtle modern conveniences. While it maintains its "primitive" classification, the recent addition of power poles is a game-changer for many local campers. This thoughtful upgrade means you can enjoy the rustic charm of tent camping or a smaller camper while still having the ability to charge phones, run lights, or power essential medical devices. This blend makes it suitable for a wider range of local campers, from seasoned minimalists to those new to primitive camping who appreciate a little added comfort. The presence of potable water and a clean Porta John further enhances the convenience, ensuring a comfortable stay without requiring extreme self-sufficiency.

Moreover, the emphasis on private and secluded campsites is a significant draw for Ohioans seeking true tranquility. In an era where many campgrounds can feel crowded, Turkey Hollow offers ample space and a sense of solitude, making it perfect for a peaceful getaway for individuals, couples, or small groups. The direct interaction with the helpful host, Matt, as highlighted in reviews, adds a personal touch that larger, more commercial campgrounds often lack. Finally, its reasonable pricing, coupled with the ability to book easily through Hipcamp, makes a spontaneous or planned escape to nature both affordable and straightforward for local residents. For those in Ohio looking for a genuine, peaceful, and conveniently updated primitive camping experience, Turkey Hollow Campground is an excellent choice to create lasting outdoor memories.

Update fall 2024... the site is just as nice with some additions. There is power poles and what appears to be an additional water spigot. The road from the opposite direction of SR62 is in fact paved, but one should be aware that there are steep hills and it was hard to get up them with a fully loaded bike. I was the only one there and there were no raccoons present. The price to stay is higher then 2020, but still very reasonable and you can use Hipcamp to pay now if you like. Original summer 2020.... Turkey Hollow is a very nice primitive campground with all you need if you are reasonably self sufficient. There is a water tap with good water and a Porta John outhouse. The location has a wonderful set of views from the hollow up to the road. The road is pretty rough getting there, if you are coming in from SR62 especially. On a bike, it was more then a little hard as you will be unable to peddle up most of the half mile from SR62 to the site and must push your bike. The pond was pretty fully of algae when I visited, and was not usable for anything except look at and perhaps fishing. The raccoon population is very much present, but was not a particularly bad problem as long as any trash or other such items are well out of their reach.

We had a great time at Turkey Hollow! The camp site was private and secluded. Matt has firewood for sale and fire rings at each site, so we were able to have a small bonfire and roast some smores, then we enjoyed a quiet and restful night. The john was clean and just a short walk from where the sites are located. Note the entrance is down some dirt switchbacks so I wouldn't recommend trying to haul a trailer or RV down there. It is listed as primitive camping only for good reason. All in all, we'd like to extend our thanks to Matt for his hospitality, and we'd stay again if we were in the area!

A great place to stay if you enjoy primitive camping. What you get is a place to pitch your tent, a fire ring, a port a pot, and more quiet nature than you can find just about anywhere. What you don't get is a paved pad to park your RV on, hookups, and another huge RV 10 feet away. It's a good place to stay if you're bicycle touring. It's only 1.5 miles from the Holmes County Trail but that last hill is a monster. Well worth the effort it takes to get there.
