MWR Navy Great Lakes RV Campground About
For those in Illinois seeking a unique RV camping experience, particularly those with military affiliation, the MWR Navy Great Lakes RV Campground in North Chicago presents an intriguing option. Nestled on the scenic shores of Lake Michigan, this campground offers a distinctive blend of natural beauty and convenient access, catering specifically to eligible Department of Defense (DoD) cardholders. While it has its unique characteristics, understanding what it offers can help you plan your next memorable RV adventure in the Land of Lincoln.
The MWR Navy Great Lakes RV Campground, located within the Naval Station Great Lakes in North Chicago, Illinois, is part of the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) program. This program is dedicated to providing quality-of-life services and facilities for service members, their families, and other authorized personnel. The RV Campground offers a year-round camping facility, providing an opportunity for eligible individuals to enjoy the beauty of Lake Michigan and the surrounding area from the comfort of their recreational vehicle. It's designed to be an affordable and convenient lodging option, particularly for those with a connection to the military community.
As a FamCamp, or Family Camp, it operates under the MWR framework, aiming to deliver recreational opportunities. While it offers a unique lakeside setting, it's important to note that its primary focus is on serving the military community. Reviews from past visitors highlight both the undeniable beauty of its waterfront location and certain operational aspects that are common in such facilities. Understanding these nuances helps set appropriate expectations for a stay at this particular RV park.
The MWR Navy Great Lakes RV Campground is strategically located at 715-799 Ziegemeier St, North Chicago, IL 60088, USA. Its most significant geographical advantage is its direct proximity to Lake Michigan, offering many sites with stunning water views. This lakeside setting provides a picturesque backdrop for an RV stay, allowing campers to enjoy the tranquil atmosphere and natural beauty of one of the Great Lakes.
Accessibility to the campground is specifically tied to its location within Naval Station Great Lakes. All guests are now required to enter through Gate 1, located at 620 Farragut Avenue, Great Lakes, IL 60088. This necessitates adherence to base access protocols, which are typically restricted to eligible Department of Defense (DoD) affiliates with valid military ID. While this might involve an extra step for entry, it ensures a secure and managed environment for authorized users.
For those looking to explore beyond the base, the campground's North Chicago location offers reasonable proximity to various local attractions and services. While the base itself provides some amenities, the surrounding Lake County area boasts a diverse range of activities, from natural parks and trails to dining and shopping options. Additionally, for visitors interested in exploring the broader Chicagoland area, access to major roadways like I-94 is relatively straightforward, allowing for day trips to Chicago's vibrant urban landscape. Public transportation options, including a nearby train station, also provide alternative ways to explore the region, making it a flexible base for those with proper access.
The MWR Navy Great Lakes RV Campground offers a set of services tailored to RV campers, with some unique considerations due to its military base location. Based on available information and common practices for such facilities, campers can expect:
- Electrical Hookups: All 20 concrete sites provide electrical hookups, with a mix of 50 amp and 30 amp service available. This is a fundamental offering for RVs, allowing for the operation of onboard appliances.
- Restrooms and Shower Facilities: The campground provides access to restrooms and nearby shower facilities. While reviews indicate that a bathhouse might be located a short distance away (approximately half a mile to a mile), these essential amenities are available for camper convenience.
- Dump Station and Water Access: A dump station and water access point are available, though they are located about a mile down the road from the main RV camping area. This requires campers to plan accordingly for fresh water and waste disposal.
- Pet-Friendly Environment: Pets are allowed in the RV campground area, with a maximum of two pets permitted per recreational vehicle. It is required that pets be leashed and their waste cleaned up at all times, with dog stations reportedly available around the grounds.
- Access to Base Amenities: As part of Naval Station Great Lakes, campers have access to a wider array of MWR facilities on base. This can include the Marina Rental Center and Ship's Store, potentially offering supplies, boat rentals, and other recreational equipment. Other base amenities like a commissary, NEX retail store, fitness center, bowling alley, movie theater, and golf course are also available for eligible patrons.
- Laundry Facilities: While not directly at the RV sites, laundry facilities are accessible at the Marina, approximately one mile away, providing a crucial service for longer stays.
Despite some limitations, MWR Navy Great Lakes RV Campground possesses several features that make it a notable destination for its target audience:
- Stunning Lake Michigan Views: Without a doubt, the most significant highlight is its prime location on the shores of Lake Michigan. Many sites offer direct water views, providing an unparalleled scenic backdrop for your RV stay. This makes for beautiful sunrises and a generally serene atmosphere.
- Level Camping Spots: Customer reviews consistently mention that the camping spots are level, which is a practical and appreciated feature for RV owners, making setup much easier.
- Affordable Lodging: As a MWR facility, it generally offers very competitive rates compared to commercial RV parks in the area, making it a cost-effective choice for eligible military personnel and DoD affiliates.
- Access to Naval Station Great Lakes Amenities: The ability to utilize facilities on the naval base, such as the commissary, NEX, fitness centers, and various recreational options (golf course, bowling, movie theater), adds significant value and convenience to a stay here.
- Reservations and Check-in Process: The reservation process is noted as simple, and check-in procedures are clearly outlined, typically taking place at the Marina & Community Recreation Center (Bldg. 13).
- Year-Round Operation: The campground is a year-round facility, allowing for camping opportunities in various seasons, which can be a distinct advantage for those looking to travel during off-peak times.
As a government-operated facility, the MWR Navy Great Lakes RV Campground does not typically run commercial "promotions" in the same way a private business might. However, its fundamental offering is itself a "special offer" for its eligible patrons: affordable lodging rates that are significantly lower than market prices for comparable commercial RV parks. These rates are a continuous benefit for active duty military members, retirees, DoD civilians, and other authorized personnel. The pricing structure is inherently designed to be a benefit, not a temporary promotion.
Specific pricing information is usually available directly from the MWR Great Lakes website or by calling their reservation line. It's always advisable for prospective campers to check the official NavyLifeGL.com website or contact the Marina & Community Recreation Center directly to inquire about the most current rates and any policies regarding length of stay, which can vary between peak and off-peak seasons (e.g., maximum 30 consecutive nights during peak season from May 1 to September 30, and up to 210 consecutive nights during the off-season from October 1 to April 30, with required two-week vacate periods). While not a promotional deal, the inherent affordability is a consistent advantage.

For eligible locals in the Illinois region, particularly those with military ties, the MWR Navy Great Lakes RV Campground offers a truly unique and valuable recreational opportunity. Its suitability stems from a combination of its picturesque setting, affordability, and the comprehensive access it provides to base amenities.
The stunning views of Lake Michigan provide an immediate draw, offering a serene escape that feels worlds away from urban life, yet remains conveniently located in North Chicago. This allows Illinois residents who qualify to enjoy lakeside camping without traveling far. The cost-effectiveness of staying at a FamCamp is a significant advantage, making RV travel and camping more accessible and budget-friendly for military families and affiliates in the state.
Furthermore, the convenience of having various MWR facilities within reach, including a commissary, NEX, and recreational options, simplifies logistical aspects of a trip and enhances the overall experience. While some amenities like water and dump stations require a short drive within the base, the ability to access these services, along with laundry and showers, provides a functional and comfortable camping experience. Despite reviews noting areas for improvement, the consensus remains that it's a "great place to stay" for its core audience. For those in Illinois who serve or have served, and are seeking an affordable, scenic, and community-oriented RV camping destination with base access privileges, the MWR Navy Great Lakes RV Campground stands out as a prime choice for their next local adventure.
Customer Reviews
Nice location on the water. That's the only good thing I can say. It's full of fulltimers that live here permanently, one guy said he's been here 2 years. The fulltimers have the water view. Electric only, water and dump about a mile down the road. Grounds are unkept and dog feces all over even though there dog stations around. Sadly it looks like base command doesn't care about the campground.
The view of Lake Michigan is great! Making the reservation was simple. The camping spots are level. That is the good points. The spots are a bit on the small side, sadly only electric hookups, no water or dump. It still is a great place to stay, just that it could be a lot better. We have been to many FamCamps and this one is pretty much in the middle, many nicer, but many worser.
Park has a ton of potential. However, staff has no pride of ownership and no work ethic. Watched an electrician fix a 20amp outlet and he left his trash on the ground when he was done. Simple RV Campground stuck out on the beach of Lake Michigan at the Great Lakes Naval Trng Station. You would think that a base dedicated to instilling pride in it's recruits would find it easy to care for this small 20 spot FamCamp. 20 electric only sites. No water, no sewer. They are both available but 1/2 mile from the park and they aren't in the same location and the dump station is difficult for big rig access. It would be easy to solve by adding sew/wat to the sites. Access is pretty easy but the road in the park is gravel and not cared for. Potholes galore. Big rigs beware. Also, each site suffers from lake affect issues. Meaning, when it rains a lake is formed in front of your rig. All of these are easily solved with #1 asphalt or #2 a grater from time to time. All that said, this is a beautiful location with tons to do. Which is why it got a 3 rating. It just needs some TLC from the NAF staff that "should" keep it "spit and polished" like the recruiters who are trained here. Come on, show the military personnel, veterans and civilians who visit your base and enjoy your grounds some pride in ownership. Come on Great Lakes...show us how it's done!
I was not expecting much as the reviews were very bad, but I like to save my opinion to experience things for myself. Which I did, and here are my thoughts. 1. Full time campers with their sites full of junk. *see photos. One guy even had an inflatable hot tub, which I could not figure out where he got the water from as all the sites are without water and sewer. 2. Pit toilets were nasty dirty and not cleaned once during our stay. 3. Campsites so cramped you could hear water running in the next RV. 4. One full timer had his black/gray tank hose emptying into and open home depot bucket. 5. Showers are dirty and in another building a mile away. 6. Lets not forget the loop road! Pot holes as big as a crater. Third world countries have better roads than this. This Naval Station is absolutely gorgeous. Chock full of historic buildings and so well preserved. It was utterly shocking to see this gem of a base have such a poorly maintained and embarrassing campground. The view from camping was stunning and should be capitalized on. The CO should be ashamed for not overseeing better management.
It’s very disappointing to see a MWR facility in such a state of disrepair. Our military members deserve much more that what I’m looking at here. The gravel road surrounding the RV park if full of pot holes which are filled with water. The pit toilet restrooms have rusted out metal doors. The grass is overdue for a mowing. Come on Navy MWR, you’ve dropped the ball. Fix it!
