Introduction / Overview
Amicalola Falls Campground is a cherished component of Amicalola Falls State Park, located in Dawsonville, Georgia. This campground offers a unique opportunity to stay "within the park," providing immediate access to one of Georgia's most iconic natural landmarks: the stunning 729-foot Amicalola Falls, the tallest cascading waterfall in the state. This proximity allows campers to "see the Falls and hike without having to go far," immersing themselves in the park's renowned beauty right from their campsite.
The campground itself is known for its serene and natural setting, allowing campers to "just to sit and be within nature." Reviewers consistently praise the "spacious and private" campsites, which offer ample room for setting up camp and enjoying personal space amidst the wooded environment. The experience of it getting "pitch black at night" further emphasizes the deep connection to nature and the opportunity for stargazing, away from urban light pollution.
Beyond the natural beauty, Amicalola Falls Campground maintains a high standard of upkeep and hospitality. Visitors have been "blown away with the beauty of the park and all the amenities it offered," noting that it was "impeccably maintained" and "everything was spotless at the campground and throughout the park." The presence of a "Camp Host" like Fallon, described as "incredibly helpful" and offering "so many great suggestions," ensures a welcoming and supportive environment for guests. While the approach to the campground is noted as "very steep to get to," the overall consensus is that the "views from the falls are worth every step," making it a highly rewarding destination for those seeking an unforgettable outdoor adventure in North Georgia.
Location and Accessibility
Amicalola Falls Campground is strategically located at 418 Amicalola Falls Lodge Rd, Dawsonville, GA 30534, USA. This address places it directly within Amicalola Falls State Park, a jewel of the Georgia State Parks system, nestled in the picturesque foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in North Georgia. The park serves as a significant gateway to the Appalachian Trail, with the famous Approach Trail starting here, leading towards Springer Mountain, the AT's southern terminus.
Accessibility to the campground involves a scenic drive through the state park. While the drive offers "beautiful views," it's important to note that the road leading to the campground is described as "very steep." Campers, especially those with larger RVs or trailers, should be prepared for this incline. Despite the elevation, the park is generally well-maintained, ensuring a relatively smooth journey once inside.
Being "within the park" is a major advantage for accessibility to attractions. Campers have immediate and convenient access to Amicalola Falls itself, various hiking trails (including the iconic Approach Trail), the Visitor Center, and the Lodge. This eliminates the need for extensive travel once you've set up camp, allowing more time for exploration and relaxation. However, it's advised to "make sure to take enough food as any restaurants are pretty far away from the campground," indicating that while park amenities are nearby, dining and extensive shopping options might require a drive outside the immediate park vicinity, typically to Dawsonville or nearby Ellijay. This location perfectly balances a sense of natural immersion with reasonable accessibility for a state park setting in the mountains.

You, your camper and the mountains…. Great place just to sit and be within nature. The campground is very steep to get to so be prepared. I love that we were within the park so we were able to see the Falls and hike without having to go far. It gets pitch black at night. There is a laundry room that’s very convenient for anyone who needs it, they are pretty clean. Make sure to take enough food as any restaurants are pretty far away from the campground. The host has firewood available for purchase. The playground by the visitors center was nice for our toddler. The views from the falls are worth every step from the bottom. Campsites are very spacious and private from the rest. I’d stay here again without a question. We didn’t see or encounter any wildlife while we were here but there were signs everywhere to be aware.
Jan 05, 2025 · Stephanie&William SansWe recently stayed Amicalola Falls Campground, it was such a wonderful experience. Our Camp Host Fallon, was incredibly helpful. She offered so many great suggestions to seeing all the park had to offer. We were blown away with the beauty of the park and all the amenities it offered. It was impeccably maintained, everything was spotless at the campground and throughout the park. We definitely will be coming back, 3 days just wasn't enough to see all the beauty the park has to offer.
Aug 23, 2024 · Michele DotyWow wow, this camp ground is so well kept. Very quite, clean and plenty of space between each site. They offer glamping tents as well. The bathrooms and showers areas were very clean. It's pricier than normal state park camping sites but, every spot has water and electric, grill, fire pit. Will definitely visit again.
Aug 30, 2024 · Jessie MThis place was amazing! We only came for a day and stayed at the campground but we'll definitely need to come back. The falls are absolutely gorgeous and there's a 400+ step staircase to get to the top. The view from the top is totally worth it though! Once you get there, you'll have access to all the trail entrances. The lodge hotel is beautiful and the food is really good. I was honestly surprised they had good prices too! The campsite was maintained so well and they have everything from glamping tents to full hookup sites to cabins. They also spend time planning activities for the people staying in the area. The night we stayed they had a campfire with the local tribes where you learn about their culture. You can really tell they put so much love in running this place. It was an absolutely amazing time, we'll definitely be back to enjoy all the activities and amenities they offer.
Sep 12, 2023 · Irene BishopWe recently stayed at the Amicalola Falls Campground. After checking in at the lodge we ventured up the mountain to the campgrounds (in low gear). It was quite a climb but once we reached the top it was great. The campgrounds are somewhat open but private enough. The sites were spacious, clean, level (gravel). We had good clean 30 Amp electric power, water, a picnic table, grill, lantern post and fire ring all in a raised fenced in area. We heard there was quite a bit of bear activity in the area but did not see any during our stay. The campground also had newer restroom facility with private showers, a shelter house and a small playground. There were plenty of bear proof trash containers as well. We had a great stay and highly recommend.
