For those of us living in Wisconsin, finding a campground that feels both welcoming and well-equipped can be a true delight. Bay City Campground fits this perfectly, managed by "super nice and very helpful" caretakers like Steve, Penny, and Bob, who consistently make visitors "feel right at home." This personalized touch, combined with the picturesque setting, creates an atmosphere where you can truly relax and connect with nature. Whether you're planning a short weekend escape or a longer vacation, this lakeside gem provides a fantastic base for exploring the rich recreational opportunities of the Lake Pepin area.
While the campsites might be "placed close together," the friendly community vibe and the undeniable beauty of the surroundings more than make up for it. "Our neighbors were super nice!" noted one satisfied camper, highlighting the positive atmosphere. The campground’s strategic location on a beautiful peninsula means you’re never far from the water, with immediate access to fishing, boating, and enjoying the serene environment that Lake Pepin offers. Even with the occasional sounds of distant trains or early morning fishing boats, as some reviews mention, true campers know that these are just part of the authentic outdoor experience, and they certainly don't detract from the overall appeal of this Wisconsin gem.
As one reviewer enthusiastically put it, "Had a wonderful time minus the rain showers on and off lol but if you are a true camper it wouldnt bother you at all and you make the best of it which we did!!! We would definitely come here again!!!" This sentiment captures the resilience and joy that Bay City Campground inspires in its visitors, making it a place you'll want to return to year after year.
Bay City Campground is perfectly positioned on the western edge of Wisconsin, right on the scenic banks of Lake Pepin, a natural widening of the Mississippi River. Its address, W6490 Lake Pepin Blvd, Bay City, WI 54723, USA, pinpoints its idyllic setting that offers unparalleled views and direct access to the water. This location is particularly advantageous for Wisconsin residents, providing a convenient and beautiful escape without requiring extensive travel.
The campground is remarkably accessible, located just 15 minutes from the charming city of Red Wing, Minnesota, which is easily reached via Highway 35 (the Great River Road) or Highway 63. This proximity to a larger town means visitors have easy access to additional amenities, dining, and attractions while still enjoying the tranquility of the campground. For those coming from larger Wisconsin cities, the drive is manageable. From Eau Claire, it's approximately a 1-hour and 20-minute drive, making it a viable option for a weekend trip. From Milwaukee, the journey is longer, around 4 hours and 30 minutes, suggesting a more extended stay to fully appreciate the area.
The campground's location on a peninsula provides stunning "beautiful views of the Mississippi" and ensures that nearly every campsite offers a glimpse of the lake. While this prime positioning means "the campsites are a bit tight," the unparalleled views and the overall experience of being so close to Lake Pepin often outweigh any concerns about privacy. The area around Bay City is known for its natural beauty, including opportunities for eagle watching, waterfowl viewing, and, of course, excellent fishing on Lake Pepin.
The campground is typically open from April 15th through October 15th, weather permitting, allowing Wisconsin locals to enjoy the beauty of spring, summer, and early fall camping seasons. This extended season makes Bay City Campground a versatile destination for various outdoor activities throughout much of the year.
Bay City Campground is well-equipped to provide a comfortable and convenient camping experience for its guests, offering a range of essential services and amenities. The focus here is on practicality and cleanliness, ensuring campers have what they need for an enjoyable stay.
Bay City Campground distinguishes itself with several unique features and highlights that contribute to its charm and popularity among Wisconsin locals:
Bay City Campground, being a local community-run facility, tends to offer consistent value through its regular rates rather than extensive, fluctuating promotions. However, the pricing structure and available amenities themselves present a compelling offer for Wisconsin locals seeking an affordable and well-equipped camping experience.
While specific "promotions" in the traditional sense might not be advertised frequently, the consistent positive feedback on the value for money, the quality of amenities (especially the new bathhouse), and the friendly staff serve as a continuous "special offer" for visitors. It's always a good idea to contact the campground directly or check their official village website (if available) for the most up-to-date information on rates, availability, and any seasonal notices.
To inquire about reservations, current availability, or any specific questions you may have about your stay at Bay City Campground, you can reach them using the following contact details:
It's important to remember, as noted in reviews, that "You have to pay for your campsite in cash in a Dropbox - bring cash along!" for your payment upon arrival. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, direct contact via phone is recommended, especially for details on seasonal operations or any changes to services.
Bay City Campground is an excellent choice for Wisconsin locals, perfectly embodying the spirit of accessible and enjoyable outdoor recreation that our state is known for. Its prime location on Lake Pepin offers breathtaking views and direct water access, providing a tranquil escape without venturing too far from home. For residents across Wisconsin, the manageable drive and the stunning scenery make it an ideal spot for quick weekend getaways or more extended, relaxing vacations.
What truly makes Bay City Campground suitable for locals is its unique blend of practical amenities and a welcoming community atmosphere. The availability of full hookups (water, sewer, 30 Amp electric) at every RV site, coupled with a "new shower/bath house" and consistently clean bathrooms, ensures a comfortable stay for all types of campers. The dog-friendly policy means that beloved family pets can join in the adventure, enhancing the experience for many Wisconsin families.
Beyond the facilities, the friendly caretakers, Steve, Penny, and Bob, play a significant role in making visitors feel at home, creating a positive and memorable environment that encourages repeat visits. The proximity to Red Wing, MN, adds another layer of convenience, offering additional dining, shopping, and entertainment options just a short drive away. While there might be some ambient noise from trains or early morning boats, these are minor details that fade into the background when weighed against the beauty of the lake and the genuine, friendly vibe of the campground. For any Wisconsinite seeking a reliable, friendly, and beautifully located campground to create lasting outdoor memories, Bay City Campground comes highly recommended.

Cute little campground!! 15 minutes from Red Wing, MN. All camp spots have water, sewer and 30 Amp electric. They are placed close together but not a problem and our neighbors were super nice! Dog friendly just have to have them on a leash at all times. There is a new shower/ bath house over by the swim beach. The caretakers Steve and Penny are super nice and very helpful and all around great people!!! Super easy to talk too and make you feel right at home!!! Had a wonderful time minus the rain showers on and off lol but if you are a true camper it wouldnt bother you at all and you make the best of it which we did!!! We would definitely come here again!!!
Jun 23, 2024 · Selina BarnesGreat place to stay. Beautiful views of the Mississippi. The campsites are a bit tight, lacking much privacy but located on a beautiful peninsula. The picnic shelter next to the campsites has electricity (a real bonus!) and lots of tables. The bathrooms are new and clean. If you want a shower is costs 4 quarters for 5 min. You have to pay for your campsite in cash in a Dropbox - bring cash along! A bit noisy at night, the campsites are located near a parking lot. Noise also echos across the lake so you can hear the trains in red wing during the night. Also many fishing/hunting boats would leave around 3am near our tents. Bob is very friendly and helpful and will check in to make sure you have what you need! Would definitely recommend Bay City campground!
Sep 20, 2020 · Caroline WalkerNice place. Great beach. Nice bathrooms. Caretaker Bob was great! Tent area is cool. But sites are close together and it's a narrow spot so you litteraly have to walk through people's campsite to walk to bathroom. But not a huge deal.
Oct 04, 2022 · charles wayneI really liked this place. It's right on the Bay, has a boat launch and beach access. It's very low tech - cash only in a drop box. It's also pretty affordable with pricing close to State Park pricing. The camp host is super friendly and very helpful. There's definitely a feel of community, people living here seasonally or full time. There's a little swing set on site and a bigger playground down the road. It's a little loosey goosey with leash rules, which I liked, because it meant my dog could play in the water, but some people may not like that. Full hook ups was nice too. It's only 20 minutes from Red Wing if you want to do any shopping or if you forget anything.
Aug 16, 2020 · Christina OwenVery nice host, very helpful. Campsites were perfect, apparently just added over the summer. Bathhouse was kept clean and was in good order, showers use quarters to make them work, but nice and clean.
