Beach Campground About
Are you a Michigan local dreaming of a camping getaway where the gentle lapping of Lake Michigan waves lulls you to sleep and breathtaking sunsets paint the sky each evening? If so, then Beach Campground at Holland State Park in Holland, Michigan, is the quintessential destination you've been searching for. This highly sought-after campground offers a unique opportunity to stay just steps from the iconic sugar-sand beaches and the famous "Big Red" lighthouse, providing an unparalleled West Michigan outdoor experience.
Beach Campground is renowned for its prime location and well-maintained facilities, making it a favorite for RV campers and those seeking cozy cabin rentals. As one satisfied camper noted, it's a "Great RV or cabin rental spot right on the beach. Kid friendly but quite compared to most RV campgrounds. Highly recommend." Visitors consistently praise the "friendly staff and well-maintained" grounds, with comments highlighting the camp host's diligence in "ensuring only campers or visitors of campers come in." While it operates with specific rules to maintain a family-friendly atmosphere, such as the prohibition of alcohol and requirements for fire pits to stay on blacktop, these measures contribute to the "quiet" and orderly environment that many campers appreciate. If you're looking for an unforgettable Michigan beach camping adventure, Beach Campground delivers on its promise of stunning views and convenient access to Lake Michigan's allure.
Beach Campground is nestled within the popular Holland State Park, with its address generally associated with Holland, MI 49424, USA. More specifically, the Beach Campground is located at 2215 Ottawa Beach Road, Holland MI, 49424. This puts it in a prime position, just over the dune from Lake Michigan, offering direct beach access and incredible views of the "Big Red" lighthouse and the channel connecting Lake Macatawa to Lake Michigan.
For Michigan residents, the park's location offers excellent accessibility. Holland is a well-known West Michigan city, easily reachable via major state highways such as US-31. Once in Holland, Ottawa Beach Road leads directly to the state park. The park itself consists of two main units: the Lake Michigan unit (where Beach Campground is located) and the Lake Macatawa unit, both on the northern side of the channel. While the registration for both campgrounds is typically located at the Lake Macatawa Campground (2175 Ottawa Beach Road), the close proximity of the two units ensures ease of navigation for visitors. This strategic placement allows campers to enjoy the serene beauty of the Michigan shoreline while still being a short drive from Holland's charming downtown, vibrant events, and local attractions, making it a highly convenient and desirable destination for locals.
Beach Campground, as part of Holland State Park, offers a range of services designed to enhance the camping experience for RVs and cabin guests:
- Paved RV Campsites: The campground features 98 paved campsites, with a majority offering 30-amp electrical service. Notably, 31 campsites provide full hook-up (50-amp electric, water, and sewer), accommodating luxury RV living. All camping equipment, including tents, must stay on the pavement.
- Camper Cabin Rentals: The park offers two fully accessible camper cabins, named Whitehall and Beacon. These cabins sleep up to 7 people with bunk beds (twins and full mattresses) in two rooms. They are outfitted with a coffee maker, microwave, refrigerator, tables, chairs, a small kitchen counter, electric heat, and electrical service. Outside, cabins include a picnic table, grill, and fire circle.
- Modern Restrooms and Showers: A centrally located, modern toilet and shower building is available, which includes restrooms, showers, and family bathrooms. These facilities are often praised for being "super clean."
- Sanitation Station: The park's sanitation station, for RV waste disposal, is conveniently located in the Lake Macatawa Campground unit, approximately one mile away.
- Concession/Store: Beachplace, located in the beach house at the Lake Michigan day-use area, offers food, ice cream, beach supplies, and more. Firewood and ice are also available for sale at the campground office.
- Camp Host On-site: A dedicated camp host ensures smooth operations, assisting campers and managing park entry to maintain a safe and exclusive environment for registered guests.
- Accessibility Features: The park provides an accessible walkway to the water and two beach wheelchairs for use on Lake Michigan, enhancing inclusivity for all visitors.
- Playground Facilities: A playground, sand volleyball court, and horseshoe pit are located near the campground office, providing recreational options for families.
- Direct Lake Michigan Beach Access: The most significant highlight is the campground's immediate proximity to Lake Michigan. A small dune separates the campground from a quarter-mile of sandy shoreline, offering unparalleled access for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the vastness of the Great Lake.
- Iconic "Big Red" Lighthouse Views: Many sites and areas within the park offer stunning, direct views of the famous "Big Red" lighthouse, providing a picturesque backdrop for sunsets and photography.
- Paved, Full Hook-up Sites: Unlike many traditional campgrounds, Beach Campground features entirely paved sites, with a significant number offering full 50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups. This ensures a more comfortable and stable experience, particularly for RV campers.
- Kid-Friendly & Quiet Atmosphere: Despite its popularity, the campground maintains a relatively "quiet" and "kid friendly" environment, partly due to controlled access and strict enforcement of rules, including the absence of alcohol.
- Year-Round Cabin Availability: The two camper cabins are open year-round, offering a unique opportunity for winter camping near Lake Michigan and the lighthouse, even when traditional water services in the campground are shut down.
- Extensive Recreational Activities within Holland State Park: Beyond beach access, the park offers:
- Hiking: Wooded dune trails and the climb to Mt. Pisgah Dune provide breathtaking views.
- Biking: Connections to the 20-mile Lakeshore Trail offer scenic paved routes.
- Paddling: Lake Macatawa (across the channel) offers opportunities for stand-up paddle boarding, canoeing, and kayaking (rentals available nearby).
- Fishing: Popular along the channel walkway on Lake Michigan and on Lake Macatawa.
- Nature Programs: Seasonal naturalists offer weekly nature-based programming from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
- Controlled Park Entry: As noted by a reviewer, the camp host manages access, preventing non-campers from needlessly driving through the site, which contributes to a more secure and private camping environment.
As a Michigan State Park, Beach Campground at Holland State Park operates under the state's standardized fee structure set by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), rather than offering traditional commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the marketing sense. However, Michigan locals can still benefit from certain programs and rates that provide value:
- Recreation Passport: This is arguably the most significant "promotion" for Michigan residents. The Recreation Passport, purchased annually with vehicle license plate renewal, provides unlimited vehicle access to all Michigan State Parks and recreation areas, including Holland State Park and its campgrounds, for a single, low annual fee. This is a must-have for frequent park visitors.
- Standardized Camping Rates: Camping fees are set by the DNR and are generally consistent across comparable state park campgrounds. Rates vary by site type (electric, full hook-up) and season (peak vs. non-peak). For the Beach Campground, rates are typically $33-45 per night depending on hookup type.
- Off-Season Camping: While the Beach Campground is a popular summer destination, visiting during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall) often means fewer crowds and potentially a different atmosphere, though rates might remain consistent. The camper cabins are open year-round, offering a unique winter experience.
- Gift Cards: Michigan State Park and Harbor gift cards can be purchased, making for an excellent gift for outdoor enthusiasts.
- Reservations: While not a promotion, making reservations well in advance through MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-44-PARKS is essential due to the campground's popularity, especially for prime summer dates.
For the most current information on specific rates, reservation policies, and any DNR-wide programs that may offer value, Michigan residents should consult the official Michigan DNR website or contact the park directly.

Customer Reviews
Friendly staff and well-maintained. The camp host does a good job and ensuing only campers or visitors of campers come in. It's nice that you don't have to worry about beac visitors driving needlessly through the campsite. It's all cement parking and no tents can be in sand. You have to bring a fire pit unless you use the ones in the common space. Fire pit has to stay on the blacktop. No alcohol allowed and they will make you dump out your drinks. They inform you of the rules at check-in.
Great rv or cabin rental spot right on the beach. Kid friendly but quite compared to most rv campgrounds. Highly recommend
Great campground if you love the beach and have no dogs. While the campground is dog friendly the beach is not. The sites are paved but that doesn't mean they were even. You get a good size pad to park and enjoy on. The bathrooms were very nice and the showers were the cleanest we've seen. The camp host came around and introduced themselves. They had a fun spot-it game for our kids. The beach is literally a 5 minute walk and just gorgeous. We enjoyed evening walks to see the sunset. There's a small general store with ice cream about a 15 minute walk from the beach. A big array of flavors to choose from. Super friendly and accommodating staff. They even let us order 5 minutes to close our last night. We will definitely be coming back to this one.
We had a wonderful weekend camping for the holland tulip festival! The campground accommodated tents however you can’t stake it in the ground. Each site does not have grills or fire pits but there are a few that anyone in the campground can use on the beach. It is in a great location and you can walk to see beautiful sunsets on the beach! The bathrooms are clean and a close walk!
Liked staying here. Bathroom was very clean and nice quiet campgrounds. Very nice fellow campers as well. Only issues was how crowded it got at night with everyone trying to watch sunset. I figured itd be easy to set up camera gear and snap photos, but crowds started flooding in, and taking over the beach. I'm sure local people know that, and its public so I cant complain too much. It just wasnt expected by any of the 6 in our party! Still cool place and obviously popular.
