For Texans seeking a genuine outdoor experience, a retreat into nature, and a break from the constant digital hum, Black Creek Lake Recreation Area in Decatur offers an inviting destination. This campground provides a more rustic and authentic camping adventure, perfect for those who appreciate simplicity and the natural beauty of the Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) National Grasslands. Unlike highly developed parks, Black Creek Lake Recreation Area focuses on providing access to serene landscapes and recreational activities, making it an excellent choice for anglers, kayakers, and tent campers alike.
It's a place where you can truly disconnect and immerse yourself in the environment, whether you're setting up a tent under the shade of mature trees or launching a kayak onto the calm waters of Black Creek Lake. Location and Accessibility
Black Creek Lake Recreation Area is situated at Fs 902, Decatur, TX 76234, USA, placing it within the scenic and expansive LBJ National Grasslands. This location is a significant draw, offering a sense of being truly "out in nature" while still being reasonably accessible from nearby towns. Decatur, a vibrant community, is just a short drive away, providing access to essential services and supplies before or after your camping trip.
One of the notable aspects of the location, as highlighted by visitors, is the clear signage directing you to the site from the highway, which helps ensure a smooth arrival. This is particularly helpful for those unfamiliar with the area. The drive leads you into a more secluded environment, setting the stage for a peaceful getaway.
The primary attraction of its location is its position on the north shore of the 35-acre Black Creek Lake. This small, uncrowded lake is ideal for quiet water activities. Furthermore, being part of the LBJ National Grasslands means that visitors have access to a vast network of trails and natural areas for further exploration, appealing to hikers and those who enjoy observing local wildlife. While the tranquility is a major benefit, it's worth noting that cell phone service can be limited or non-existent in this area, which for many, is precisely the point – a chance to genuinely disconnect.

Features / Highlights
Black Creek Lake Recreation Area shines in its natural attributes and the simplicity it offers. Its highlights are geared towards those who truly appreciate getting back to basics:
Promotions or Special Offers
As Black Creek Lake Recreation Area operates as a public recreation area managed by the U.S. Forest Service, promotions in the traditional sense are not typically offered. However, the inherent "special offer" is its affordability and accessibility. The camping fee is generally set at a very reasonable rate, often just $10 per night per site, and day-use fees are minimal, around $2 per vehicle. It's important to remember that these fees are often collected via an honor system at a self-pay station, so bringing exact cash is essential. The campground's location within the LBJ National Grasslands means it’s a relatively short drive for many in North Texas, making it perfect for spontaneous weekend trips or even a mid-week break. The "shady af" campsites are a major draw, providing a cool and comfortable retreat from the intense Texas sun, a feature highly valued by those accustomed to the state's climate. The simple, well-maintained facilities – picnic tables, grills, fire rings, and vault restrooms – cater to the core needs of campers without unnecessary distractions, allowing for a more genuine connection with the outdoors.
For those who love to fish or kayak, Black Creek Lake provides an ideal, often uncrowded, setting. It’s a tranquil spot where you can enjoy the water without the hustle and bustle found at larger, more popular lakes. Furthermore, the limited cell service, while potentially inconvenient for some, is a deliberate benefit for many Texans looking to genuinely unplug from their daily routines and experience a true digital detox. This allows for a deeper appreciation of the quiet solitude, the sounds of nature, and uninterrupted time with family and friends. It's a place where local families can introduce their children to the joys of simple camping, where anglers can find peace by the water, and where anyone can reconnect with the natural beauty of their home state.
Very well maintained campsite and clearly marked signs directing you to the site coming from the highway. I set up my site near the parking lot. It had a picnic table, grill and fire ring and plenty of level ground to set up tents. In the future, I will hike back into the woods to set up camp as there was traffic coming and going throughout the night. Boat ramp is maintained well as are the vault restrooms. On a side note, I had virtually zero cell phone service here. I prefer to be disconnected but some may not like it.
Dec 29, 2020 · Marc MJust okay. Shady af. Not as safe as Lake Ray Roberts. Unstaffed area where you pay on the honor system. Usually some questional, maybe even homeless people there. You may or may not be offered drugs for sale depending on the day. Take $6 cash per car. Great for kayaking once you're actually on the water.
May 05, 2019 · Branana DWe went accidentally on National Public Lands Day (Saturday September 30th 2017) and am glad. I never knew about this cool little area, until aunty&unky told me to check it out. We found a geocache or two and enjoyed walking through the beautiful grasslands with our dog (psycho-bunny-hunter). It was a beautiful day. Will return to check it out in different seasons, and maybe camp. 🖒
Nov 10, 2017 · Kenneth CollinsworthSecluded and well kept. Pretty quiet and dark, perfect for camping. $2 per night, the cheapest campsite I've ever been to. Primitive camp sites with fire rings everywhere. No water or electric hook-ups. Pack out campgrounds.
May 26, 2018 · Darel HutchisonGreat place to take the kids 👌. You can kayak, play on the play ground, fish, camp 🏕 .I've seen cows, birds, fish and a beaver too ! Only thing I absolutely hate is the toilet area which is a vault system that is disgusting and creepy. Although, it is better than having no toilets at all. 🤷♀️
