Camp Wilson is located at 6501 Pohick Bay Dr, Lorton, VA 22079, USA, as part of the larger Pohick Bay Regional Park. Lorton is a census-designated place in Fairfax County, Virginia, situated in the heart of Northern Virginia. This region is a highly desirable area, characterized by its blend of suburban development, natural preserves, and immediate proximity to Washington D.C. and other major employment centers. The address places Camp Wilson within a significant regional park, suggesting a well-defined and accessible natural space.
For Virginia residents, especially those in Northern Virginia, Camp Wilson offers excellent accessibility. Lorton is well-connected by major roadways, including Interstate 95, which runs directly through the area, providing straightforward routes to various parts of Northern Virginia, Washington D.C., and points south. The proximity to these major transportation arteries means that reaching Camp Wilson is convenient, even for those traveling with camping gear or group supplies. While the reviews mention that "road access into camp is not obvious" and can be confused with a fire station, once identified, the path leads to a beautiful natural setting within a short drive from urban conveniences.
Pohick Bay Regional Park, where Camp Wilson resides, also benefits from its location along the Pohick Bay, which feeds into the Potomac River. This waterfront proximity often implies additional recreational opportunities. Its situation within Fairfax County ensures access to extensive urban amenities, including shopping centers, diverse dining options, and medical facilities, providing a balance of nature immersion and practical convenience for group campers.
Camp Wilson primarily operates as a group campground, meaning its services are tailored to accommodate larger parties rather than individual family units, though the individual sites within the group area are still distinct. Based on customer reviews and general expectations for a regional park campground, here's what visitors can anticipate:
- Group Campsites: The core service is the provision of "nice group campground" sites. These sites are designed to accommodate multiple tents and individuals, making them ideal for family reunions, scout troops, youth groups, or other organized gatherings. Reviews note that campsites are "very nice, tons of trees and ample places for tents."
-
Comfort Stations (Bathhouses): The campground features "comfort station" facilities. These typically include:
- Flush Toilets: Essential for hygiene and convenience, offering a step up from more primitive camping.
- Sinks: For washing hands and basic needs.
- Showers with Hot Water: A crucial amenity, especially after a day of hiking or outdoor activities. While reviews note the bathhouse "is okay" and "could use some maintenance," the presence of hot water and functional facilities is a key service.
-
Individual Site Amenities: Each group campsite is equipped with basic necessities for a comfortable outdoor experience:
- Fire Rings: For building campfires, a central part of the camping experience.
- Grills: For cooking, separate from the fire ring. Reviews state these are "in good shape."
- Picnic Tables: For outdoor dining and gathering at each site.
- Road Access within Camp: The campground provides road access to individual sites, allowing for convenient loading and unloading of gear.
- Hiking Trails Access: Directly from the campground, visitors can access "hiking trails around the back of the roads," providing immediate opportunities for nature exploration and exercise.
These services collectively aim to provide a functional and enjoyable environment for groups seeking a camping experience within a managed park setting.
Camp Wilson's highlights are deeply rooted in its natural setting within Pohick Bay Regional Park and its specific design as a group campground. Customer reviews offer valuable insights into what makes this place stand out:
- Beautiful and Spacious Campground: A recurring theme is the sheer beauty of the campground and the generous size of the sites. Reviewers mention "beautiful campground" and "more spacious areas without trees that you can tent in," alongside "tons of trees," indicating a diverse and aesthetically pleasing environment for various camping preferences.
- Ideal for Group Gatherings: As a "nice group campground," its primary highlight is its suitability for larger parties. The ample space at sites and the communal facilities make it perfect for family reunions, scout troops, or any organized group looking to camp together.
- Extensive Tree Coverage: The presence of "tons of trees" provides natural shade and a more immersive forest camping experience, contributing to the peaceful atmosphere and offering a sense of seclusion despite being a group campground.
- Direct Access to Hiking Trails: The convenience of having "hiking trails around the back of the roads" directly accessible from the campground is a major highlight for active campers. This encourages exploration of the park's natural beauty without needing to drive elsewhere.
- Functional Basic Amenities: Despite some comments on maintenance, the fact that the comfort station has "flush toilets, sinks, and showers (with hot water)" and that "everything worked" is a significant functional highlight. These amenities provide essential comfort that elevates the experience beyond primitive camping.
- Well-Maintained Site Features: The specific mention that "Fire rings and grills in good shape" indicates attention to detail at individual campsites, ensuring that campers have functional equipment for cooking and enjoying campfires.
- Proximity to Pohick Bay Regional Park Amenities: Being part of a larger regional park means access to additional features (though not explicitly Camp Wilson's direct offerings), which typically include boating on Pohick Bay (leading to the Potomac River), a marina, a golf course, and nature programs, offering a broader range of recreational activities for those willing to explore beyond the campground itself.
These features collectively make Camp Wilson an excellent choice for groups seeking a scenic, spacious, and functional outdoor base for their adventures in Northern Virginia.
Information regarding specific, publicly advertised promotions or special offers for Camp Wilson is not readily available through general online searches. As a facility within a regional park system (managed by the Fairfax County Park Authority or a similar entity), its pricing structure typically follows established park fees for group site rentals rather than frequent promotional discounts.
However, groups interested in booking Camp Wilson might inquire about:
- Off-Peak Season Rates: Rental fees for group sites might be lower during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall, outside of major holidays) or during weekdays when demand is typically reduced. This can provide a more cost-effective option for groups with flexible scheduling.
- Multi-Night Discounts: Some park systems offer slight reductions in daily rates for groups booking multiple consecutive nights for their campsite.
- Fairfax County Resident Discounts: Residents of Fairfax County might be eligible for discounted rates on park facilities, including camping, compared to non-county residents. It's always worth asking if a group's organizer or a certain percentage of its members are county residents.
- Youth Group/Non-Profit Rates: Organizations like scout troops, school groups, or registered non-profits might qualify for special pricing, reflecting the park's potential mission to support community and educational initiatives.
To get the most accurate and up-to-date information on group site availability, pricing, and any applicable special rates, the most effective approach is to directly contact Pohick Bay Regional Park or the administrative body responsible for its camping reservations.

Customer Reviews
Beautiful campground and the site is very clean. There are some more spacious areas without trees that you can tent in. There are hiking trails around the back of the roads. But the bath house is okay and it isn’t too clean so I didn’t want to take a shower here.
Nice group campground. Road access into camp is not obvious (I ended up turning into fire station). Campsites are very nice, tons of trees and ample places for tents. The comfort station has flush toilets, sinks, and showers (with hot water). Comfort station could use some maintenance, but everything worked. Fire rings and grills in good shape.
Great trails. Plenty of room in the camp sites. Great for Scout Troops and Packs.
Camped here for cubscouts. Their sites are spread apart that gives the campers a more secluded, in the woods feel. Bathrooms are a bit far, but clean and having 4 stalls inside. There wasn't a big field to play large group games. Parking was limited.
Great place to camp with Scouts - we loved it!
