For us Virginians, especially those of us with military ties, finding recreational opportunities that cater to our unique community is always a welcome discovery. Our state is rich in history and natural beauty, offering countless ways to enjoy the outdoors. However, for active duty personnel, veterans, and Department of Defense (DOD) affiliates, access to specific facilities can make all the difference in planning a relaxing getaway. That's where Travel Camp, located on the esteemed Fort Belvoir, steps in as a highly sought-after camping destination right here in Northern Virginia.
Travel Camp at Fort Belvoir provides an exclusive and convenient escape for those who serve or have served our nation. Operated by MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation), this campground offers a unique opportunity to enjoy the outdoors within the secure and supportive environment of a military installation. While it comes with specific rules and requires a military or DOD affiliation for entry, its popularity speaks volumes about the value it provides. For many, it's not just a place to park an RV; it's a familiar and comfortable haven amidst the bustling Northern Virginia landscape, a place to reconnect with nature and fellow service members.
This article aims to provide a clear, engaging, and informative overview of Travel Camp at Fort Belvoir, specifically tailored for Virginia residents with military connections. We'll explore its strategic location, the services it offers, its key features, and why it remains a top choice for eligible campers looking for an outdoor adventure near the nation's capital.
Travel Camp is a dedicated campground situated on Fort Belvoir, a United States Army installation located in Fairfax County, Virginia, just south of Washington, D.C. This facility is exclusively available to individuals with a military or Department of Defense (DOD) affiliation. It is operated by MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation), an entity typically focused on providing quality-of-life programs for service members, their families, and other authorized personnel.
The campground serves as a vital recreational resource, offering a convenient and secure camping option for a community that often requires specific accommodations. It primarily caters to recreational vehicles (RVs) but provides an essential service as one of the few year-round camping choices in the Northern Virginia area. Its popularity is evident in its booking status; it is frequently "booked solid from April to October," underscoring its high demand among eligible users.
While MWR facilities are typically non-profit organizations, the user review notes that this specific MWR campground operates in a manner described as "for-profit," indicating that while it serves the military community, it maintains a structured approach to its operations and pricing. Despite some specific rules and payment requirements (such as full payment in advance for reservations made up to a year out), its consistent use highlights its value and appeal to its target demographic within the Virginia military community.
Travel Camp is strategically located at 10200 Johnston Road, Fort Belvoir, VA 22060, USA. This address places it directly on the grounds of Fort Belvoir, a sprawling military base in Fairfax County, Northern Virginia. Its location is a significant advantage for military and DOD-affiliated residents of Virginia and the wider Mid-Atlantic region.
Being on a military installation provides a secure and controlled environment, which is often a priority for military families. Access to Fort Belvoir requires proper identification (CAC card, military ID, or DOD ID) and typically involves passing through security checkpoints. Once on base, the campground is easily navigable. The extensive network of roads in Northern Virginia, including I-95, US-1, and the Fairfax County Parkway, provides excellent access to Fort Belvoir from various parts of Virginia, Maryland, and Washington D.C.
For those working at Fort Belvoir, the Pentagon, or other military installations in the National Capital Region, the campground offers an incredibly convenient "staycation" option or temporary housing solution. Its proximity to Washington D.C. also means easy access to national monuments, museums, and historical sites, allowing campers to combine outdoor relaxation with cultural exploration. While the location provides a secure and exclusive atmosphere, it's essential for visitors to be aware of and adhere to military base access protocols.
Travel Camp at Fort Belvoir offers a range of services designed to support a comfortable camping experience for its military and DOD-affiliated guests. Based on common campground amenities and the provided reviews, the following services are typically available:
While the overall services are positive, the recent feedback regarding trash accumulation at the dumpsters suggests an area where visitors should be mindful and potentially verify current conditions upon arrival.
Travel Camp at Fort Belvoir stands out with several key features and highlights that make it a desirable choice for its target demographic:
While there was a recent concern about trash, the overall sentiment indicates a well-liked campground, particularly for its exclusive access and convenient location.
As an MWR-operated facility primarily serving a specific population (military/DOD), Travel Camp at Fort Belvoir typically does not run "promotions" or "special offers" in the commercial sense. Its pricing and availability are generally standardized and regulated by MWR policies. However, the "offer" for its target audience lies in its inherent value proposition:
It is important for prospective campers to be aware of the 60-day maximum stay limit. For detailed and up-to-date information on rates, availability, reservation procedures, and specific rules, authorized users should contact the Fort Belvoir MWR directly or visit their official recreational services website.
For inquiries, reservations, or to confirm current policies and availability at Travel Camp on Fort Belvoir, eligible individuals can use the following contact details:
When contacting, be prepared to provide your military or DOD affiliation details, as this is a requirement for booking and entry. Calling ahead, especially for popular dates, is strongly recommended due to the high demand for sites.
For us Virginians with military or DOD affiliation, Travel Camp at Fort Belvoir is an exceptionally suitable and often indispensable option for camping and temporary stays. Its suitability for locals stems from several key factors that cater directly to our community's needs and preferences.
Firstly, the exclusive access for military and DOD personnel creates a secure and familiar environment. This sense of shared experience and security is highly valued, providing peace of mind that may not be found in civilian campgrounds. For active-duty families, it offers a convenient and affordable "home away from home" during transitions or visits to the area, while veterans can enjoy a comfortable retreat within a supportive community.
Secondly, its strategic location in Northern Virginia is unparalleled. As one of the very few year-round camping options in the region, it fills a critical gap for those seeking outdoor recreation close to major employment centers like Fort Belvoir, the Pentagon, and Washington D.C. This convenience significantly reduces travel time, allowing more time to enjoy the campsite or explore the nation's capital and its many historical sites, all easily accessible from the base.
Finally, despite some specific rules like the 60-day maximum stay and upfront payment, the spacious sites, clean laundry and shower facilities, and the overall MWR management contribute to a positive experience. While a recent issue with waste management was noted, the consistent return of campers year after year speaks to the overall satisfaction and the irreplaceable value this campground provides. For our military families and DOD colleagues in Virginia, Travel Camp at Fort Belvoir isn't just a campground; it's a vital amenity that enhances our quality of life and allows us to enjoy the outdoors with comfort and security.

This campground is located on Ft. Belvoir in Virginia. Military or DOD affiliation is required. It is run by MWR which is a for-profit company. There are very restrictive and sometimes confusing rules that regulate staying here. There is no weekly or monthly rates; it is $60 per day and there is a 60 day maximum stay. Reservations can be made up to a year in advance, but must be paid in full. This place is booked solid from April to October, and there are no other choices for year round camping in Northern Virginia.
Feb 23, 2025 · David KlineWe love this Campground, stayed here many times. We camped here In a Motorhome. Sites are spacious, nice laundry facility, showers are clean. This time though there was one flaw. The dumpsters were filled to capacity, trash all over the ground. After one week here they finally picked up the trash. He dumped trash on the ground due to overflowing dumpster and just left it. Hopefully someone will come and clean up that area We will stay here again.
Jun 14, 2023 · Marianne FlowersThe campground is very clean with a beautiful view. The concrete pads are nice, they’re advertised as level but they are not. Love that is it full hook ups. My only real negative is they Advertise that they have 56 spots when in fact most of those spots are reserved by full-timers, Who live in the travel camp year around. They all watch the calendar carefully and keep rebooking their spots. I was estimate there are over 30 full time families living there. I can’t blame them with the cost of housing here.
Sep 16, 2021 · Palmore FamilyNice place along the Potomac with a fishing pier just down the hill. Sites were full hookup and bathhouse had individual showers/toilets and was clean. Considering my site was a concrete pad, it should have been level but was several inches off. The view made up for it though and will definitely be back to visit DC area.
Jul 17, 2021 · Billy WilsonFantastic military family campground. Well-maintained and in a very nice location just south of DC. The campground is nestled away from everything down a hill and on the water. It’s peaceful and quiet mist of the time. The staff is friendly and helpful. Yes, it does cost a little more but you have WiFi, cable, and full hook ups. We are able to stay here 34 days without disconnecting to dump our stuff every few days. Huge bonus for us. The sites are nicely spaced with picnic tables and fire rings at each site. There are fishing piers and pavilions and a dog park. The sunsets aover the water are gorgeous. This is the nicest military campground we’ve stayed at and highly recommend it.
