Introduction / Overview
For Massachusetts residents seeking the quintessential coastal New England camping experience without straying far from the comforts and attractions of the North Shore, look no further than Cape Ann Camp Site in historic Gloucester, Massachusetts. Established in 1949 and family-owned and operated for generations, this destination offers a truly authentic and charming retreat. Situated on a beautiful, wooded hillside overlooking salt water inlets and the Annisquam River, the campground is a cherished haven that has been thoughtfully carved from nature, not built over it, allowing for a unique and rustic feel.
The site welcomes all types of campers, from those with large RVs requiring full hookups to those pitching a simple tent under the shade of mature woodland. It provides an ideal base for exploring the rich maritime history, stunning beaches, and vibrant cultural centers of Cape Ann and beyond. Visitors consistently praise the dedicated, friendly staff, who are noted for being accommodating, kind, and willing to help guests learn about and navigate the local area. The commitment to maintaining a clean and well-kept environment, especially in the facilities, underscores the camp's focus on providing a quality, family-oriented experience, a detail frequently highlighted by local users looking for a reliable and enjoyable getaway.
Location and Accessibility
Cape Ann Camp Site boasts an enviable position at 80 Atlantic St, Gloucester, MA 01930, USA. Gloucester itself is a historic and scenic fishing village, roughly 30 miles northeast of Boston, making the campground a remarkably convenient escape for residents of the Greater Boston area and Central Massachusetts. Its prime location on Cape Ann places it squarely at the heart of one of the state's most popular vacation destinations.
Accessibility to the region's main attractions is a major selling point. The campground is nestled close to major routes, yet maintains a sense of peaceful seclusion. Significantly, it is only about one mile from the renowned Wingaersheek Beach, famous for its white sand and tidal flats—an ideal spot for families. Good Harbor Beach, another gorgeous local beach known for swimming and surfing, is also just a short four-mile drive away. For those who wish to venture into the city without the hassle of driving, the MBTA Commuter Rail station is only about 2.5 miles from the campsite, offering a convenient, hour-long ride directly into Boston.
While the campground itself is nestled in a natural setting, providing an immediate sense of getting away, it’s important for visitors to plan transportation for excursions, as the immediate vicinity and local attractions, including the beaches, often require driving and have specific (and sometimes costly) parking requirements, particularly during the peak summer season. The staff's willingness to help campers navigate these local nuances, such as finding necessary local shops or explaining beach parking, further enhances the accessibility of the overall Cape Ann experience for local users.

Staff is very friendly. We lucked out and got a great campsite away from other people but most of the sites seems very close to others especially rv sites. But pretty standard. Price per night is good. I only needed 1 night but had to pay for 2. I didn't mind since hotels in the area were over 3x as much. My campsite was great but I know I would not have liked the ones with people so close or the ones by the road. There was a raccoon family that came to our campsite all night but we were eating and there were no other sites with people near us so it makes sense. Named her Marlene. The security guy is super nice and seems like the whole site is well maintained. The bathrooms are good too for a campsite. be prepared for the parking at the beaches nearby. It's 45 dollars to park and the spots go fast.
Jul 27, 2025 · a booBring bug spray! The staff are amazing, kind and willing to help explain the area. They helped us find some shops for things we needed and were very accommodating. The prices are what you would expect, but completely worth it. Unlike the KOA nowadays, this place takes care of the bathrooms and put a lot of effort into their camp. The shop at the main office has what you would need should you find yourself in need of food, towels, wood, and typical gift shop memorabilia. Their focus seems to be the camp more than it is selling gifts and products. Another place I can't wait to come back and visit.
Aug 15, 2025 · Michael smithLove love love this campsite. The front services was perfect and helpful. People complained about the roads but they were fine and it’s a campsite so of course they are going to be rough. The showers were quarters only but really wasn’t too bad and enough time. Water pressure was good and water was good temperature. Site was clear of debris and really love the way that the fire pits were rock fire pits not metal pits.
Jul 05, 2025 · Jackie BingmanThe office staff was very helpful and kind. Everyone we encountered was friendly and enjoyed the area. The seasonal campers were very helpful and welcoming. I can't say enough about this place and we plan to make this place a future destination. So peaceful, friendly and clean! Thank you Cape Ann Campsite for a great experience!
Aug 01, 2025 · Robert WittNice camping. All the sites are in a forest on a hill, so there is a bit of a slope problem. The site we were given had an electric vehicle parked by someone camping nearby, but the camping staff took care of it quickly and moved us to another, better location. The toilets and showers inside the campsite are a bit small, there is no option to do laundry, and you can't get to the city or the beach on foot. You have to take the caravan out. We stayed for one night and moved on.
