Introduction / Overview
Winter Island Park, nestled right on the shore of Salem Harbor, offers Massachusetts residents a uniquely convenient and picturesque coastal camping experience. Far from being a remote woodland site, this city-operated park is a multi-use urban destination that successfully combines rich maritime history, sweeping ocean views, and readily accessible RV and tent camping. It provides the rare opportunity to camp right on the New England coastline, just minutes away from one of the state's most famous and historic downtown areas.
This seaside gem is situated on the 54-acre Winter Island peninsula, offering a lively atmosphere that blends traditional camping with a full array of marine and recreational activities. Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking scenery, with the historic Fort Pickering Lighthouse standing guard over the entrance to Salem Harbor. While some of the facilities, such as the bathhouses, are noted to be older, the overall consensus is that the friendly staff, clean sites, and unbelievable location make Winter Island Park a premier destination on the North Shore for an easy, memorable getaway. It’s an ideal base camp for exploring the historical and cultural highlights of Salem without the hassle of daily travel.

The location of Winter Island Park is its standout feature, offering an unparalleled blend of seaside seclusion and urban access for local users in Massachusetts. Situated at the end of Salem Neck, the park is approximately one mile northeast of the famous downtown Salem tourist area.
Address: 50 Winter Island Rd, Salem, MA 01970, USA
Accessibility: The park is exceptionally accessible, offering multiple transportation options. Guests can easily drive directly to the campground via surface roads, and the location is manageable even for larger RVs, though campers should be mindful of the narrow roads typical of the New England coastline. Crucially for those looking to explore, the park is a stop on the Salem Trolley tour route during the season, providing a convenient, low-stress way to visit downtown attractions without worrying about city parking. For the physically active, the park connects to Salem's extensive city-wide bike path, making it a perfect destination for local cyclists and pedestrians.
The proximity to downtown Salem—a mere few minutes’ drive—means campers are never far from restaurants, museums, shops, and seasonal festivals, providing a unique 'city camping' experience that few other campgrounds in Massachusetts can match.

Setting up reservations for a place we've never been has never been so easy! The site was a bit small yet cozy in its own way. You're only a few minutes from the tourist area of Salem. The beach and views were over the top and beautiful. The bath house could use some upgrades, but it was clean. Staff was so very kind and friendly.
Sep 01, 2025 · Lindsey TrentI absolutely loved this place, not the fanciest but one of my favorites. The views were amazing the office staff, security and maintenance were all friendly and helpful. Walking the dogs around was enjoyable and relaxing. The beach was beautiful. Honestly the only issues were the boaters using the boat ramp fly through the parking lot. And the bathrooms need some upkeep but they were clean!
Aug 22, 2025 · Aj TihanskyWe found this place the perfect spot for exploring Salem. Has the basics and our site was flat. We were out in the field which suited us with our Starlink. One of the water sites though would have been great. The showers aren’t the best so we used our own. Gorgeous sunsets there.
Sep 11, 2025 · Marcelle AlvernazThis is a beautiful park for day visiting. There are RV overnight spots in the parking lot, but your neighbors are VERY CLOSE and most include electric and water hookups, but bring a water filter as the water had particles in it. My friends and I had a beautiful view overlooking Salem Harbor. We parked by the function hall where there was a party going on. The party guests were not respectful of our site and walked all through it during their party. Park staff apologized but I felt like they should’ve advised the party goers about walking through the sites. We were met with rude replies when we asked the party guests to walk around our site and not through it. The beach is quite small but very beautiful. There are bathrooms and a bath house which would benefit from a little upgrade but the shower was hot and that’s all I needed. If I stay here again, it won’t be next to the function hall even though the view is wonderful. The staff is mostly young people and they are quite loud. They would shout across the parking lot at each other in the early morning and they raced their golf carts through the lot frequently while collecting the trash from the cans dispersed throughout the area. At $45/night, I thought it would be better. I guess we were paying for the view and not the camp space.
Jul 03, 2025 · French BlondeIt’s a beautiful place. Both water and electric at our site in the field. We loved the location’s proximity to both Salem and Boston. We couldn’t stay a long time because our grey/black tanks are small, but it is perfect for 2 or 3 nights. The restrooms and showers are usable. Not high class, but clean. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
