As a State Forest Campground operated by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Carney Lake State Forest Campground primarily operates on a first-come, first-serve basis for its 16 rustic sites. This means there are typically no specific promotions or special offers in the traditional sense, as the pricing is standardized and designed to be affordable for public access. The current rate for a campsite is $20 per night.
However, the ongoing "promotion" is the consistent availability of an authentic, quiet, and affordable Michigan outdoor experience. The value lies in the natural beauty, the seclusion, and the access to various recreational activities at a very reasonable price point. For Michigan residents, the benefit is the ease of access to these natural resources without the need for complex booking systems or inflated seasonal rates often found in more commercial campgrounds. The low daily rate is a continuous "special offer" for those seeking an economical way to enjoy the state's wilderness.

For residents of Michigan, Carney Lake State Forest Campground represents an ideal local getaway, embodying the spirit of the Upper Peninsula’s wilderness. Its primary appeal lies in its rustic nature and commitment to providing an authentic outdoor experience, far removed from the overly commercialized campgrounds found elsewhere. As one reviewer aptly put it, "It was so peaceful and beautiful. Kind of wish I could have stayed longer." This sentiment perfectly captures the essence of what makes Carney Lake so special for Michiganders.
The first-come, first-serve policy is a huge benefit for spontaneous adventurers. Unlike many state parks that require reservations months in advance, Carney Lake allows for flexible, last-minute trips. This means on a beautiful Friday afternoon, you can simply pack up your gear and head north, knowing a tranquil spot awaits. The fact that "no one else was camping" on a Thursday night in October, as one visitor experienced, highlights the incredible opportunity for solitude that is often difficult to find in our increasingly crowded world.
The large, rustic campsites, many of which are "right on the lake," offer unparalleled access to Carney Lake itself. This direct lakefront experience is a significant draw, whether you’re looking to fish for walleye, panfish, or pike, launch a canoe or kayak, or simply enjoy the serene views. The presence of vault toilets and potable water from a hand-pump well ensures basic comfort while maintaining the rustic charm. This balance caters perfectly to locals who appreciate genuine wilderness camping but still require essential amenities.
Furthermore, the campground’s location on a designated ORV road with accessible ATV trails makes it a fantastic hub for off-road enthusiasts. For those who own ORVs, the ability to directly access the trails from the campground entrance without needing to trailer their vehicles long distances is a major convenience. Beyond motorized recreation, the surrounding state land offers ample opportunities for hiking and wildlife viewing, immersing visitors in the rich biodiversity of the Upper Peninsula.
Carney Lake State Forest Campground is more than just a place to pitch a tent; it’s an invitation to experience the quiet beauty and rugged charm of Michigan's U.P. Customer Reviews
I was heading home, downstate and needed a place to stay for the night. This was great camping right on the lake. I was there on a Thursday night in October and no one else was camping. It was so peaceful and beautiful. Kind of wish I could have stayed longer.
Very nice rustic campground. Large campsites. Half of the sites are right on the lake. There is also A nice picnic area right next to the campground.
The five miles of dirt road to get in is best suited for a higher clearance SUV or pickup truck, but we made it in and out several times in small cars without any issue over our long weekend stay. This campground is actually quite well maintained considering how remote it is. Bathrooms were clean and had toilet paper stocked, though I never saw a DNR employee during my stay. About two thirds of the sites were occupied on Labor Day weekend when we stayed. Among our group of campers, we found T-Mobile had the best cell coverage here. Calls and web browsing both worked fine. Verizon and AT&T could complete calls but data was effectively unusable.
The campground was beautiful and we had a great time, downside for our trip the woman's bathroom was absolutely awful, I would've hoped that before a bigger weekend like memorial weekend they would've been emptied. We ended up using the men's restroom until that one was also unusable... I will go back again, but I do hope they pay more attention to the restroom area's..
Nice secluded campground in the natural beauty of the U.P. no crybabies bitching about being up past 9:00
