Introduction / Overview
For New York residents looking to escape the urban hustle and immerse themselves in the scenic beauty of the Finger Lakes region, Cheerful Valley Campground in Phelps, NY, presents itself as an exceptional destination. Situated in a peaceful river valley, this campground is more than just a place to pitch a tent or park an RV—it is a full-service, family-oriented resort designed to deliver a memorable upstate New York getaway.
Cheerful Valley Campground is strategically positioned to serve as a central base for exploring the best of the Finger Lakes, including the renowned Wine Trail, historic sites, and the region's vast recreational water bodies. With over 125 grass-covered campsites, the park caters to a wide spectrum of campers, from those seeking a full hook-up for a large 'Big Rig' RV to those who prefer the simplicity of a 'back to nature' tent site, and even travelers looking for a comfortable cabin or rental trailer stay.
The philosophy here is to ensure "You'll have more fun," and the comprehensive amenities package supports this promise. It is an established, well-known location in the Central New York camping circuit, operating seasonally from approximately May 1st to October 15th, weather permitting. Its longevity and diverse offerings make it a reliable choice for everything from a quick weekend trip to a full seasonal stay.
While the majority of feedback is positive—highlighting the fun activities, friendly staff, and great atmosphere—the professional and factual duty requires acknowledging all customer experiences. For instance, one camper described their two-week holiday experience as "Great," specifically praising the cleanliness of the bathrooms but noting that the showers were "outdated and very difficult to use," and that one staff member appeared "overwhelmed with workload and was kind of blow off Ish." Another camper expressed significant frustration with noise, stating, "Parents behind us allowed 4 preschool aged children to scream and have multiple temper tantrums... no effort by parents or camp authorities to curb it," leading them to state, "We won’t be back." These details are important for prospective New York users to consider, ensuring they set realistic expectations for a busy, family-friendly environment, particularly during peak holiday periods like the Fourth of July, which can sometimes be louder and more active.
Ultimately, Cheerful Valley Campground aims to provide a wholesome, action-packed, and highly accessible camping experience in one of New York's most beautiful regions. Its wealth of facilities and diverse accommodations make it a flexible option for New York families and travelers.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
Cheerful Valley Campground is a premier choice for New York locals, particularly those in the Upstate, Central, and Western regions, for several compelling reasons. First and foremost is its strategic location right off the I-90 Thruway, making weekend trips easy and minimizing stressful travel. Its positioning in the Finger Lakes region means that campers are not just booking a site; they are booking access to an entire regional playground—from world-class wine tours and gourmet dining to boating, hiking, and historical exploration.
For families, the suitability is evident in the sheer volume of scheduled activities and amenities like the pool, jump pad, and vintage fire truck rides. The diverse site options, from full 50-amp RV hook-ups to rustic tent sites and comfortable cabins, ensure that every family's preferred style of camping is accommodated, whether they are veteran RVers or first-time tent campers.
While the campground is a high-traffic destination, especially on holiday weekends, which can sometimes lead to minor maintenance issues (e.g., outdated showers) and increased noise levels (as one past review noted), it remains a professional, high-value option. Management has clearly invested in the fun factor, offering services like the camp store and laundry to ensure guests have a hassle-free vacation. The consistent availability of hot showers (even if in older facilities, as one user pointed out), and the cleanliness of the overall restroom facilities, which another reviewer praised, demonstrate a commitment to core camping necessities.
In essence, Cheerful Valley Campground is suitable for New York locals because it removes the logistical complexity of a traditional vacation and replaces it with organized, engaging fun in a stunning natural setting. It provides the ideal blend of rustic escape and modern convenience, making it the perfect family-friendly destination in the heart of the New York Wine Trail.

I’ve been here for two weeks during a busy holiday weekend Fourth of July I’m very picky and straight to the point. My overall experience Was Great my only real complaint is the bathrooms. They were extremely clean and sanitized, but the showers themselves are outdated and very difficult to use after a little figure things out we may do with what we have. I will definitely be back for another camping trip. I would give it a 4.5 out of 5 The staff for the most part, we’re good one staff you can tell was overwhelmed with workload and was kind of blow off Ish, but I understand it was a busy weekend and they have a lot to do
Jul 13, 2025 · Adam PorterNo doors on showers just shower curtains. I prefer be able to latch a door while I’m showering. Parents behind us allowed 4 preschool aged children to scream and have multiple temper tantrums while running and playing at 7 am until they left at 9 am with no effort by parents or camp authorities to curb it. Other campers two tiers higher and farther away yelling down to shut it down and no result. We won’t be back.
Jul 18, 2025 · C GancarzGood size campground. We were here on a holiday weekend, and the place was packed. Lots of planned activities for kids. We were in the back row so we had more room, backed up to the woods.
Jul 06, 2025 · Arlene O'MayReally nice basic campground. Excellent location alongside a very peaceful meandering riverbank with lots of opportunities for fishing. Nice open level Safari field with plenty of pull through. Not a ton of amenities, but that’s fine with me. This is also one of the most quiet campgrounds I’ve ever stayed at on the weekend.will definitely be back
Aug 13, 2024 · Jim McGennisOur camp site was fairly nice, on the creek and very open. There were so many rules, you can tell they want their money. I was excited for the amenities for my son but most of it was run down. I didn’t find the staff friendly at all, they are monitoring everything. When our ac stopped working they blamed us for popping the breaker and said if it happened again it wouldn’t be turned back on. Won’t be returning
