Introduction / Overview
For New York families and adventure seekers, Crystal Grove Diamond Mine & Campground offers a truly unique destination that combines serene camping with the excitement of a hands-on geological treasure hunt. Located in St. Johnsville, NY, this small, quaint campground is nestled in a peaceful, wooded setting alongside the tranquil Timmerman Creek, perfectly positioned near the Adirondack and Central Leatherstocking Regions.
The core attraction is the opportunity to mine for world-class Herkimer Diamonds—a type of stunningly clear, naturally faceted quartz crystal found only in this part of Upstate New York. The mining sites are adjacent to the campground, allowing guests to walk from their campsite to the open-pit mine to dig for their own crystals on matrix or gemmy, water-clear specimens. Customers consistently rave about the "great experience," noting the abundance of crystals found, the well-planned events, and the extremely happy and friendly atmosphere among both staff and fellow campers. Whether you arrive in an RV, pitch a tent, or stay in one of the charming rustic cabins, Crystal Grove provides a distinctive and memorable adventure for locals looking for more than a typical camping trip.

We really enjoyed camping and mining here. It's small quaint and everyone was extremely happy and friendly, both staff and fellow campers. We yielded so many crystals, the kids never got bored. The event they held had many vendors and was well planned. Great experience!
Aug 18, 2025 · Renee BerbeneciucThe cabins are so cute and I had such an amazing time with my trip here! The mines are also very nice and we found some very cute crystals on matrix and some water clear gemmy ones! The gift shop area is also very clean and cute. Amazing experience for the price! The bathrooms could use some extra love but aside from that I have zero complaints!
Aug 04, 2025 · Dante CarfizziWonderful place to camp! Our tent site was right on the creek and it was just beautiful scenery! If you stay at the campsite, they give you early access to the mine as well! The shop at the campground was very affordable. They have WiFi at the camp store for those who need it. Rest of the area had 0 connection (which is completely normal for a campground)! At the mine we found many awesome Herkimer Diamonds! Only downside was you had to pay a quarter machine for the shower, there was only 1 women’s shower (not sure if they had 1 or 2 men’s) as well. I definitely recommend this campground & mine. Such a peaceful, beautiful stay!
Jul 02, 2025 · Kaitlyn RandallVisited with Scout Troop Oreland 1. It was the perfect outing for camping and for fulfilling a requirement toward the Geology Merit Badge. This is a great trip to take with kids, but it's also a trip to take with friends. Kudos to the staff, who are friendly, knowledgeable, and accessible. Shout out to Pat whose enthusiasm for geology and nature's wonders is sincere and contagious.
Sep 02, 2025 · Alexander StankuWonderful place! Staff are very friendly and helpful! We decided to take my daughter (11) mining since she loves collecting crystals and we enjoy it ourselves , The grove dose not disappoint, we have been twice now and enjoyed our day , it’s really cool to see your kids head pop out of a dirt hole giddy at her finds. I will say though I wouldn’t advise this for littles, expect them to get bored fast if they can’t chill in one place and dig in dirt for a good amount of time, however you can walk nature trails, ride bikes and camp (very clean grounds) and close to other outdoor activities in the area.
