Flanners Beach Campground About
For those of us in North Carolina who yearn for an escape into nature, where the scent of pine mingles with a hint of salty air, Flanners Beach Campground offers a compelling destination. Nestled within the vast expanse of the Croatan National Forest, just a stone's throw from the historic city of New Bern, this campground provides a unique blend of forest tranquility and coastal proximity. It's a cherished spot for many local campers, whether you're pulling in with an RV, setting up a family tent, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat from the everyday hustle.
Flanners Beach Campground isn't just another place to pitch a tent; it’s an immersive experience in the diverse ecosystems of Eastern North Carolina. Here, you'll find yourself surrounded by the characteristic longleaf pines and cypress swamps of the national forest, while also being tantalizingly close to the Neuse River and, as the name suggests, a beach area. This dual natural appeal makes it a standout choice for those who appreciate both wooded serenity and opportunities for waterside recreation. It truly represents the rich variety of outdoor adventures available right here in our own state.
What truly resonates with North Carolina campers, as highlighted by those who frequent Flanners Beach Campground, is the sense of privacy and natural beauty that the sites offer. Despite being a popular spot, the design of the campground often incorporates natural buffers like trees and plants between sites, creating a more secluded and intimate camping experience. While some amenities might require a little patience or attention from state management, the inherent charm and natural setting of Flanners Beach continue to draw visitors back time and again. It’s a testament to the enduring appeal of a well-located campground that allows us to truly unplug and reconnect with the natural world around us.
Flanners Beach Campground is conveniently located on Flanners Beach Rd, New Bern, NC 28560, USA. This address places it squarely within the Croatan National Forest, an expansive and ecologically significant area in Eastern North Carolina. For many North Carolinians, this means a relatively easy drive to a true natural escape, without having to venture too far from home. New Bern, a charming and historic city, is just a short distance away, providing campers with access to a variety of amenities, including grocery stores, restaurants, and cultural attractions, should they need anything or wish to explore local history.
The accessibility of the campground is generally straightforward, with well-maintained roads leading directly to the entrance. This is a significant plus for those traveling with RVs or travel trailers, ensuring a smoother journey. The location within the national forest also means that visitors are immediately immersed in a rich natural environment upon arrival. This provides opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and simply enjoying the unique flora and fauna of the coastal plain forest.
While the name "Flanners Beach" implies direct and expansive beach access, it's important for potential visitors to note, as per recent reviews, that beach access has been affected by past storms. Currently, only a portion is deemed safe and open to the public, and reaching it may require a walk. This is a crucial piece of information for those specifically hoping for extensive direct beach activities. However, the proximity to the Neuse River and various waterways within the Croatan National Forest still offers ample opportunities for water-based recreation such as kayaking, canoeing, and fishing, ensuring that water lovers will find plenty to enjoy. The balance of forest solitude and reasonable proximity to a historic city makes Flanners Beach Campground a well-situated option for a diverse range of North Carolina campers.

As a campground managed by a governmental entity (likely the US Forest Service, given its location in Croatan National Forest), Flanners Beach Campground typically operates on a standardized fee structure rather than offering frequent, publicly advertised "promotions" in the commercial sense. The value proposition here lies in its affordability relative to private campgrounds and its unique natural setting.
However, for North Carolina residents, there are common "offers" or considerations that are perpetually available when staying at National Forest campgrounds:
- America the Beautiful – The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass: For seniors, disabled individuals, military personnel, and fourth graders, various passes are available that can offer free entrance or discounts on camping fees at federal sites, including those within National Forests. This could significantly reduce the cost of a stay for eligible individuals.
- Off-Season Rates: While not explicitly stated for Flanners Beach, many federal campgrounds offer lower rates during the off-peak seasons (e.g., fall or winter) when demand is lower. It's always worth inquiring about seasonal pricing.
- Group Rates: For larger groups, there might be specific group camping sites or rates available, which could be cost-effective for family reunions or organized outings.
The most reliable way to find out about specific rates, availability, and any potential offers would be through the reservation system often used for federal campgrounds. This system can be accessed via the contact phone numbers provided. It's recommended to call (877) 444-6777 or +1 877-444-6777 and inquire about the most current pricing and any applicable discounts for which you might be eligible. The true "special offer" of Flanners Beach Campground for locals is the accessible opportunity to experience serene coastal forest camping at a reasonable price point.

These numbers typically connect you to a centralized booking system for federal campgrounds, which can provide comprehensive information on site features, availability, and policies. For those of us living in North Carolina, Flanners Beach Campground offers a truly compelling and accessible option for a refreshing outdoor escape. Its unique location within the Croatan National Forest, combined with its proximity to the historic city of New Bern, provides a perfect blend of wilderness immersion and convenient access to modern amenities. This balance is particularly appealing for local campers who want to feel truly disconnected in nature without being entirely isolated from supplies or local attractions.
The campground’s design, emphasizing privacy between sites with natural barriers of trees and plants, is a significant draw. For North Carolinians, who often seek peaceful retreats, this feature ensures a more personal and tranquil camping experience, whether you’re in an RV or a tent. It allows for a deeper connection with the natural surroundings, fostering relaxation and a sense of solitude that can be hard to find in more open, densely packed campgrounds.
While some recent feedback notes areas for improvement in facility upkeep and limited beach access, the core appeal of Flanners Beach Campground—its beautiful natural setting, the presence of a helpful camp host, and its affordability as a federal campground—remains strong. These are often aspects that locals prioritize: a good value, a friendly environment, and, most importantly, direct access to the diverse and beautiful landscapes that define our state. It provides a fantastic opportunity for families, couples, and solo adventurers from across North Carolina to enjoy the unique coastal plain forest, engage in outdoor activities, and create lasting memories, all within a reasonable drive from their homes. It’s a true local treasure for nature lovers.
Customer Reviews
Nice campground. We stayed on a rv site with electric. The sites have privacy as there are trees and plants between them. The bathrooms were clean and there was a handicap bathroom separate from the others which also have a handicap stall. If there is a downside, it would be the limited beach access. Storms damaged the beach and only a portion is deemed safe and is open to the public. Beautiful area just be ready for a walk if going to the beach area. I hope they get rest of the beach area safe to open soon.
The beach area is open at one side now. The host is great. But the state that rents these spots has fallen short in upkeep. Day area showers don't work and there's nowhere to even fill up a water jug. Camping one bathroom doesn't work or shower. The main bathroom has only one toilet working and the showers are hot only. Really hot with no tap too turn on you have to wait awhile to get cool enough to bathe. The host isn't responsible for building overhauls! They have water in the campground area at different spots. The state has to fix this place up. People love it and extend power. No 39 spot has no power yet both sides has power.
Both showers were not working and they were filthy. There was only one toilet working for the women. The handicap stall was dirty and disgusting, the water fountain was so gross. I couldn't even look at it. Can't find the communal garbage and I can't find the water for my unit. Apparently there's only one spigot for the entire campground. I don't know how people have rated this four stars before because the camp host is never around when you need her. And her campground is dirty and disgusting as well so I know that's why nothing is being taken care of.
Location is good.. close to Atlantic Beach, Beaufort, Harkers Island and New Bern. We took ferry to Cape Lookout and shuttled to the point. Campsite rate is good. Bathroom showers only had hot water. One womens bathroom working so rather busy. The handicapped bathroom was open also. It is convenient to access. The beach is still closed ... no access. We did pay for electric hookup but it was not working. The host did loan us their personal converter and showed us how to use. It was a hot, humid, buggy weekend for camping.
Host was great helping me get my site. Quiet campground. Could be way better with beach access. If not change name. Flanners bluff.
