This article will delve into the specifics of what makes Gateway Park Campground such a suitable and appealing option for Iowans looking for their next outdoor adventure.
Gateway Park Campground is ideally situated in Monona, Iowa, with its address listed simply as Monona, IA 52159, USA. More specifically, it’s located on 802 S Main Street, right off Highway 18, making it incredibly easy to find and access. Its strategic placement at the corner of Highway 52/18 and Main Street (Falcon Avenue) means it's often the first park visitors see when entering Monona, serving as a true "gateway" to the community.
The accessibility of this campground is a major advantage. While it offers a pleasant park setting, it doesn't suffer from the extreme seclusion that can sometimes make camping feel isolated. Instead, it strikes a balance, providing a quiet atmosphere without being far from essential services. This prime location means that campers can enjoy the tranquility of their site while being just a few hundred feet from a Subway, a deli, a full grocery store (which also sells firewood), and two convenience stores/gas stations, one of which is open 24 hours. This proximity to amenities is a huge plus, allowing campers to easily restock supplies, grab a quick bite, or fuel up without having to travel far from their campsite. The easy access from major roadways also makes it a great stopover for those traveling through Northeast Iowa, providing comfortable and reliable accommodations.
Gateway Park Campground is well-equipped to provide a comfortable and convenient camping experience, featuring a range of modern amenities and thoughtful services.
-
Full Hookup Campsites: The campground offers 7 sites with full hookups, including 30A and 50A electric, water, and sewer connections at each site. This makes it an ideal choice for RV campers seeking all the comforts of home. All sites have been hard-surfaced, improving their usability and appeal.
-
Tent Sites: In 2024, three new tent-only sites (A, B, and C) were added, providing a dedicated space for traditional tent camping at a different rate. While sites 4-7 are technically back-in RV sites, they can be used for tent camping if the campground isn't full, though the RV rate would apply.
-
Newly Constructed Restrooms and Showers: Visitors consistently praise the "nice shower house" and "new bathroom" facilities. These climate-controlled restrooms and showers are clean and well-maintained, enhancing the overall comfort of your stay. They are also ADA compliant, ensuring accessibility for all users.
-
Picnic Shelter with Grills: A picnic shelter complete with tables and charcoal grills is available for public use, providing a communal space for gatherings, outdoor meals, or simply relaxing in the shade.
-
All-Inclusive Playground: For families with children, a brand new, all-inclusive playground was installed in 2020. This modern play equipment provides a safe and engaging space for kids to burn off energy.
-
Complimentary Dump Station: Campers staying at Gateway Park Campground can utilize the sanitary dump station free of charge, offering a convenient solution for RV waste disposal. Non-campers can use the dump station for a small fee.
-

Gateway Park Campground, while not vast, makes the most of its space with several key features and highlights that enhance the camper's experience.
-
Proximity to Essential Amenities: One of the most frequently lauded features is its incredible convenience. Being just a few hundred feet from a full grocery store (Quillin's), a Subway, a deli, and 24-hour convenience/gas stations means campers have immediate access to food, supplies, and fuel, making trips easy and reducing the need to stock up extensively beforehand.
-
Veteran's Memorial: Within Gateway Park, there is a significant Veteran's Memorial that honors servicemen and women from Monona who have served in the armed forces. This memorial includes local veterans' names from the Civil War to the present, and five life-sized statues representing the five branches of the United States' armed services. It’s a poignant and respectful place for reflection.
-
Upgraded Facilities: Recent improvements, including hard-surfaced sites, new bathroom facilities, and a renovated shelter house, demonstrate the city's commitment to providing a high-quality camping experience. The campground is also open year-round, although maintenance is limited in winter.
-
Family-Friendly Environment: With the new all-inclusive playground, the park is designed with families in mind, offering a safe and fun environment for children to play.
-
Local Farmers Market: From May to October, the Monona Farmers Market is held at the park's shelter, offering campers and locals the chance to purchase fresh, locally sourced vegetables, fruits, homemade pies, and breads – perfect for campsite meals.
-
Access to Walking Trails: A hard-surfaced trail extension was completed in 2023, starting at Gateway Park, providing opportunities for leisurely walks within the park and connecting to other areas of Monona. There is also a walking trail that runs along the outer edge of the park, creating visibility to travelers on Highway 52/18.
-
Minimal Road Noise Impact: Despite its convenient location near roadways, visitors have noted that any road noise is minimal and typically "did not keep me awake," indicating a generally peaceful atmosphere.
As a municipal campground operated by the City of Monona, Gateway Park Campground typically maintains a straightforward pricing structure rather than offering complex promotional deals. The standard daily rates are set at $35 per night for RV sites (including full hookups for 30A/50A electric, water, and sewer). The newly added tent-only sites (A, B, C) are available for a lower rate of $10 per night.
While specific "promotions" in the traditional sense might not be frequent, the transparent and affordable pricing itself acts as a strong incentive for locals. The value provided by full hookups, modern restrooms, and convenient access to town amenities at these rates is quite competitive within the region. It's always a good idea to confirm current rates and any potential seasonal variations by contacting the City of Monona directly or checking their official website, as policies can occasionally be updated.

Great place to camp. Little road noise but did not keep me awake
Full hookups: 30A and 50A electric, water, and sewer at each site. Shelter, tables, grills, bathrooms, play equipment. A few hundred feet from Subway, deli, full grocery store with fire wood, and also two more convenience stores/gas stations, one open 24 hrs.
I think the flooding give us the place character. And you down by the river you got to expect water.
Too expensive for a quick trip. 10 for tents. 20 for anything else.
Very clean park with electric for rvs. Water, restrooms and dump station available. Farmers market every Wednesday.
