Gilles Family Dairy and Woodland About
For many Minnesota locals, the desire to escape the everyday hustle and immerse themselves in nature is a strong call. While countless campgrounds dot the Gopher State, a truly unique and personalized experience can be found at Gilles Family Dairy and Woodland in Houston, MN. This isn't just a campground; it's an opportunity to connect with nature on a working dairy farm, offering a blend of rustic charm, genuine hospitality, and peaceful seclusion.
This article aims to provide a clear, engaging, and informative overview of Gilles Family Dairy and Woodland, helping Minnesotans discover this hidden gem. Based on glowing reviews, it's a place where hosts go above and beyond to ensure a comfortable and memorable stay, providing thoughtful details and a welcoming atmosphere. We will delve into its unique location, the services and distinctive features it offers, and ultimately, why it stands out as a highly suitable choice for locals seeking a quiet, nature-filled escape with a touch of farm life charm in Southeastern Minnesota.
Gilles Family Dairy and Woodland is charmingly located at 29246 Hass Rd, Houston, MN 55943, USA. Houston is a small, welcoming city in Houston County, Minnesota, nestled in the picturesque bluff country of the Root River Valley. This region, part of Minnesota's "driftless area," is renowned for its stunning unglaciated landscapes, rolling hills, deep valleys, and abundant outdoor recreational opportunities.
The campground's specific address on Hass Road suggests a rural, secluded setting, which is precisely what many campers seek for a quiet getaway. Despite its secluded feel, Houston is accessible via State Highway 16 and County Road 2. This connectivity means that Gilles Family Dairy and Woodland is within a reasonable driving distance for many Minnesota residents. For example, it's roughly an hour's drive from Rochester, a major regional hub, and about 2.5 hours from the Twin Cities metropolitan area, making it a feasible weekend escape without an overly long journey.
The drive to the campground itself is part of the experience, winding through scenic landscapes that immediately transport visitors away from urban environments. While the location on a working farm adds to its unique character, accessibility for vehicles, even those not designed for extreme off-roading (like a Subaru Impreza 4WD mentioned in a review), appears to be well-managed, with hosts ready to assist if needed. This blend of remote charm and managed accessibility makes Gilles Family Dairy and Woodland a desirable destination for those seeking a tranquil, nature-infused escape in Southeastern Minnesota.

Customer Reviews
Lovely place with very nice hosts! We pulled in with our RV and no reservation, which was no problem because there was a brand new site with electricity available. Hay bales on one side, trees with birdsnests and a nice fireplace on the other side, in front a giant grass field with self built swings in trees for our kids to play with. Mike made us feel very welcome. Gave us a map of all the hiking trails around the farm, was very helpfull to explain everything. Within 15 min. they layed down a mat on the floor in front of our RV door to prevent dirty shoes inside and would not let us use our own stash of firewood. The kids loved to see all the animals and to do a hike in the woods. Mike and family thank you so much for having us and good luck with the farm and campground activities!
This was such an amazing camping experience, there’s no other way to put it. From the open lines of communication, private site, and extremely thoughtful details, this was by far one of my favorite getaways. Mike and Joan are the best hosts and you’re missing out if you don’t take advantage of their camping spots. My beagle and I thoroughly enjoyed the hiking trails around/through the property along with lounging by the campfire (plenty of cut wood ready to be burned). Mike was kind enough to check in on us and made sure we could get to/and out of the site. My Subaru Impreza 4WD has no problems getting down (and out) to the camp site, but Mike was ready to take us himself or help us if a tow was needed. The Wooden Tent itself was such a comfort especially during a few rain showers:) If you’re looking for a quiet escape with hiking and bird watching, this is the place! I plan on heading back as soon as I can!
Magical place. A 230 acre farm where Mike and Joan welcome up to 4 camping parties per night. Hiking trails galore. Special finds abound!
Lovely Hipcamp location. Beautiful location, unlimited firewood, clean outhouses. Really enjoyed our stay here!
To start with I am not the camping type guy but on July 12, 2019 Mike Gilles gave me, my wife and our son-in-law a tour of the Gilles farm Hip camp area. First I was struck by the beauty and size of this valley. Mike showed us the two cabin sites, one a double cabin tucked up into the hillside with a scenic view of the camp site. The other A-frame cabin site is closer to the valley floor but still plenty of beauty around you. In closing I liked all of nature around me and the way Mike & Joan Gilles creatively keep the critters at bay at the beautiful camps. Lots of trails to enjoy
