The fees for primitive campsites are generally consistent across DNR-managed lands and are designed to cover the basic maintenance of the facilities.
However, local users in Minnesota can still benefit from certain advantages when planning a trip to Vinegar Ridge:
Affordable Camping: The nature of primitive camping often translates to very affordable overnight fees compared to more developed campgrounds, making it a cost-effective option for a getaway.
Minnesota State Park and Forest Vehicle Permits: While not a specific "promotion," visitors to any Minnesota State Forest, including the Richard J. Dorer Memorial Hardwood State Forest where Vinegar Ridge is located, often need a vehicle permit. Purchasing an annual permit can be a cost-saving measure for frequent visitors to Minnesota’s state parks and forests, offering unlimited access throughout the year. This is a practical benefit for locals who plan to explore various natural areas.
Off-Peak Season Benefits: While not a formal promotion, visiting during the shoulder seasons (spring or fall) or weekdays can often mean fewer crowds and a more solitary experience, effectively offering a "special" and more serene atmosphere without a direct discount.
It is always recommended to check the official Minnesota DNR website or contact them directly for the most current information on any fees, permits, or potential updates regarding the campground. While explicit promotions may be rare, the inherent value of a peaceful, affordable, and well-maintained natural escape remains a consistent draw for Vinegar Ridge Recreation Area.

Customer Reviews
Great Dnr Primitive Campground. We parked our RV there. Some sites are level. Pit toilet provided. No toilet paper. Bring your own. No running water.
Nice quiet place to camp while exploring the driftless area.
This is a basic, no services state forest campground. No electricity, no water, no dump station. There are some nice amenities though. Each of the 8 non reservable, first come first served sites has a nearly level pad, a picnic table, and fire ring. Approximately half of the sites are suitable for a small to mid sized RV. I had no issues finding a spot for my 18x8 travel trailer. Most people I've seen tent camp or have a pop-up. Camping is $14 per night with a paybox. There is a ranger that drives through regularly. The sign says $15 per night for horse campers, though I couldn't find where the horse sites were or even if there are any. The vault toilet is what you'd expect from a hole in the ground with a shed over the top... Try not to spend too much time in there.
Good... Will go and camp there again.
Nice camp sires. Well kept potty. A lot of hiking.
