**Introduction / Overview**
For Minnesotans seeking the quintessential North Shore experience, the Grand Marais Campground & Marina stands out as the ultimate basecamp. This municipal facility, officially known as the Grand Marais Recreation Area, is strategically positioned on a scenic peninsula bordered by the Grand Marais Harbor on one side and the vast expanse of Lake Superior on the other. It offers an exceptional combination of rugged natural beauty and unparalleled access to the vibrant arts, dining, and cultural hub of downtown Grand Marais.
With approximately 300 diverse campsites, the facility caters to every style of outdoor enthusiast, from primitive tent campers seeking to fall asleep to the "steady hush of waves" to RV travelers requiring full hook-ups. The location alone is frequently cited as the campground's "real star," providing immediate access to the waterfront, the town, and a sweep of the rugged shoreline. While some customer feedback notes that the overall maintenance or leveling of certain sites "could use a bit of love," and that some sites are "tight together," the consensus remains overwhelmingly positive: the convenience, the scenery, and the experience of waking up to "pastel sunrises over the harbor" make it an unforgettable destination. The campground operates year-round, although the full-service water and bathhouse facilities are typically seasonal, opening from May through mid-October.

We camped for a long weekend here. The location is amazing, however, the camp ground could use a bit of love. Our site was the most unlevel site we have encountered (4 leveling blocks side to side and we were so much on an incline our jack didn't go low enough to make us level from to back). Our site was also tiny with no room to set up screen house. The sites are also very tight together. The shore in right there. The northern lights were beautiful. The town is a short walk. Beautiful place. Some sites had lake views. There are some seasonal sites.
Sep 15, 2025 · DanelleThe real star here is the setting — your tent pitched just steps from Lake Superior, with downtown Grand Marais, the marina, and a sweep of rugged shoreline within easy reach. The sites feel open and well-placed for wandering, and while the facilities are plain and ready for an update, the convenience and scenery more than make up for it. Expect to wake to pastel sunrises over the harbor and fall asleep to the steady hush of waves. For the best experience, aim for sites 300–315, which are ideal drive-up tent spots. Shoreline sites, while tempting, are tightly packed and separated from the water by a fringe of woods.
Aug 13, 2025 · BrianThe Grand Marais Campground is a fantastic place to stay when visiting Grand Marais. It features a beautiful beach and is conveniently located just across from the town center, putting shops, restaurants, and attractions all within easy walking distance. The location is especially ideal for families with children, thanks to the beach and nearby amenities—but that can also mean a livelier atmosphere that may not appeal to those seeking peace and solitude. One thing to keep in mind: the campsites are packed quite closely together, offering little to no privacy and plenty of foot traffic. However, we found that guests were very respectful of the quiet hours, which makes a big difference in such tight quarters.
Jul 15, 2025 · Oliver FanzAn awesome place to spend the weekend! Reasonable campground pricing and if you’re looking for somewhere near town that allows to walk to restaurants/cafes it can’t be beaten. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly which paired with a much needed shower rooms that were plenty nice.
Sep 05, 2025 · Deven AbrahamRight in Grand Marais! Beautiful scenery all around. Crowded in mid August, and a mostly RV campground. Driers are too loud in the bathroom. Our campsite had dried dog poop we had to clean up before setting up our tent. Dog pee circles were everywhere from past dog visits. I don’t want to camp in the dogs’ bathroom area again (Group site#1). But the lakeshore is beautiful and Grand Marais access makes it a good spot otherwise. Other campers were polite, friendly and kept the campground relatively quiet considering how close everyone is packed in.
