For those in Central Texas seeking an immaculate and engaging camping experience, Grelle Recreation Area in Spicewood stands out as an absolute must-visit. Operated by the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA), this gem is more than just a campground; it’s a sprawling natural playground designed for diverse outdoor pursuits, appealing to everyone from avid hikers to serene anglers.
Nestled around an isolated cove on the picturesque southern shore of Lake Travis, Grelle Recreation Area offers a unique blend of rugged Hill Country terrain and tranquil lakeside access. Imagine setting up camp in a spot that is "immaculate – well-maintained, clean, and thoughtfully spaced for a comfortable stay," as one delighted camper described it. This attention to detail ensures that your time here is as comfortable as it is adventurous. The park’s commitment to providing a quality outdoor experience is evident in its fair pricing, making it an accessible option for many Texans looking to escape the everyday.
What truly sets Grelle Recreation Area apart is its emphasis on diverse outdoor activities. Whether you’re lacing up your hiking boots to conquer "rugged hills beneath the endless oaks," hitting the trails on your bike, or even exploring by horseback, this park caters to a wide range of interests. And after a day of exhilarating activity, there's nothing quite like "relaxing by the campfire" and enjoying a meal cooked on the provided BBQ grills. With plentiful fishing opportunities adding to the "peaceful and fun atmosphere," Grelle Recreation Area truly offers something for everyone, living up to its reputation as a place that has it all for both adventure seekers and those simply looking for a quiet escape in nature.
Grelle Recreation Area is strategically located at 640 Co Rd 412, Spicewood, TX 78669, USA. This address places it within the stunning Texas Hill Country, approximately 30-35 miles west of downtown Austin. For Texans, this makes it an incredibly convenient and accessible natural escape, allowing for easy day trips or extended camping adventures without a lengthy drive. Spicewood itself is a charming community, renowned for its beautiful landscapes, rolling hills, and close proximity to the Highland Lakes.
The park is wrapped around an isolated cove on the south shore of Lake Travis, ensuring direct access to one of Central Texas's most popular lakes. Its position allows for easy exploration of the lake's vast expanse for fishing, kayaking, and swimming. Directions typically involve taking Texas 71 west from Austin, turning north on Spur 191, proceeding to Spicewood, then taking a right on Burnet County Road 404, followed by a left onto Burnet County Road 412. While County Road 412 is a gravel road for a portion, the park is designed to be accessible for vehicles. This blend of seclusion and relative ease of access from major population centers makes Grelle Recreation Area an ideal spot for locals seeking a genuine outdoor experience close to home.

The park is "pet-friendly" and dogs are welcome on trails, often off-leash in some areas, but always check current regulations and use common courtesy.

This is our second time camping here and we love it. The park host is the best. would love for LCRA to add in a shower and better bathroom facility
Absolutely gorgeous, incredibly well kept camp ground. We met the Host, Ms. Kramer and knew within 30 seconds that this woman was incredibly passionate about her work. It shows in the remarkable attention to detail, and cleanliness of the campsite. She was quick to offer us a map of the hiking trails, as well as up to date advice on what to expect. The water has been gone for a couple of seasons, and your GPS map is likely to be inaccurate as to where the river is.
My husband and I took a spontaneous camping trip. We intended to go to Pace Bend Park but they were fully booked for primitive camping. We took a short stop on the side of the road to figure out our next step. Looking up places around us, we found Grelle Rec. Park. Called to check if they had any availability and a sweet Lady named Linda said “come on down, I got you guys”! She and her sweet dog met us at the entrance. We followed her down to one of the overflow sites where we ended up pitching our tent. A view with hills, water and Blue bonnets everywhere. Linda saved our weekend and this sweet lady didn’t just take the time out of her day to meet and talk with us, she keeps the whole place clean. Dogs are supposed to be on a leash but we went down to the beach and let the dogs go crazy, like many other campers did. Everyone was friendly and cautious of other people around. Thank you, Linda. We very much enjoyed our stay.
We really enjoyed our stay at Grelle! Linda and Cricket are the best. We've never felt more welcomed at a park before. We camped in a tent with 2 adults, 2 teens, and our dog. Grelle has a lot of shaded hiking and many offshoots to explore. I don't think there has been water at Grelle for a long time so we definitely were surprised by that but it didn't take away from our experience as it was a bit chilly anyway. There is 1 portopotty as well as the restroom(which we didn't end up using because it was much farther). Take wood with you or Linda has some she can sell you, cash is easiest it seemed. We stayed at campsite #4 and it was a great spot near the portopotty (not too close) and it was a large campsite with a tall fire ring drum that made making a fire in the windy conditions both easier and safer. We hope to return soon!
