This detailed guide will walk you through everything you need to know about JR Campground, from its serene location to the friendly faces you'll encounter, and the special touches that make it a truly memorable spot. Customer reviews rave about the "wonderful experience" and particularly highlight the warmth and hospitality of "Grace, the owner," making it clear that a stay here is more than just camping; it's about connecting with nature and genuine human kindness. If you’re a local looking for that ideal riverfront getaway, keep reading to discover why JR Campground might just become your new favorite spot.
JR Campground is conveniently located at 258 Johnny's Rd, Rileyville, VA 22650, USA. This address places it squarely in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, a region renowned for its stunning natural landscapes, outdoor recreational opportunities, and charming small towns. Rileyville itself offers a sense of rural tranquility, providing a true escape from urban environments.
What makes JR Campground particularly special is its direct access to the Shenandoah River. This riverfront setting is a major draw for campers interested in fishing, kayaking, canoeing, or simply enjoying the peaceful sounds of flowing water. However, it’s important to note a key detail regarding accessibility mentioned by previous visitors: "be ready to drive through a little creek. Little/nice cars might struggle." This suggests that while generally accessible, vehicles with lower clearance or those not designed for light off-road conditions might face a minor challenge. It’s advisable to consider your vehicle type when planning your visit, especially during or after periods of heavy rain, though for most standard vehicles, it should be manageable. The natural setting, including this unique entry, contributes to the campground’s rustic charm and secluded feel. Its proximity to major roads within the Shenandoah Valley means that while it feels remote, it’s still within a reasonable driving distance for many Virginians.
JR Campground offers a more minimalist approach to services, focusing on providing a natural camping experience while ensuring basic necessities are met.
-
Campsites: The campground provides spacious areas where campers can "make your own area," offering a sense of freedom and flexibility in setting up camp. These are primarily primitive or semi-primitive sites, ideal for tent camping or smaller RVs that are self-contained.
-
Firewood Delivery: As highlighted by a customer review, staff or owners are known to "bring out firewood" directly to campsites, even "after it got dark to check if we were doing okay." This personalized service is a significant convenience and a testament to their hospitality.
-
Porta Potty Access: A "porta potty on site" is available for restroom needs. While functional, it is noted that cleanliness can vary, particularly by Sunday morning after a weekend of use, which is typical for such facilities in a rustic setting.
-
River Access: The most significant "service" offered is direct access to the Shenandoah River, allowing for various water-based activities like fishing, swimming, or launching small watercraft.
The emphasis here is on simplicity and embracing the outdoors, so don't expect extensive amenities like full hook-ups, showers with hot water, or a large camp store. This setup appeals to those who enjoy a more "between roughing it and a nice campground with amenities" style of camping.
JR Campground truly shines through its unique features and the intangible qualities that make a camping trip memorable.
-
Exceptional Owner Hospitality: "Grace, the owner," is consistently praised as "the most lovely lady" and "so great." Her welcoming and attentive nature, along with the friendly staff who deliver firewood and check on campers, creates a warm and inviting atmosphere that stands out. This personal touch is a major highlight.
-
Beautiful Riverfront Setting: Being "on the water was beautiful," providing picturesque views and direct access to the Shenandoah River for relaxation and recreation. The "ground was comfy and lush," contributing to the overall aesthetic appeal.
-
Freedom and Respect Among Campers: Visitors consistently note a "feeling of freedom, but also an overall respect between all the campers." This creates a harmonious environment where "people had music on and stayed up late, but no one was loud or disrespectful," allowing everyone to enjoy their experience in their own way.
-
Authentic Camping Experience: JR Campground offers a genuine outdoor experience, appealing to those who prefer less commercialized sites. It’s a place where you can truly connect with nature without excessive distractions.
-
Dog-Friendly Environment: While not explicitly stated in the provided reviews, the relaxed and open nature of the campground, combined with the focus on outdoor activities, often indicates a welcoming environment for well-behaved dogs. It's always advisable to confirm their pet policy directly.
-
Seasonal Considerations: Campers note that "in November so no real bug issues although some gnats during the day," but suspect it "might be buggier in the summer since it’s right next to the river." This provides valuable insight for planning your trip based on seasonal preferences.
Given the nature of JR Campground as a smaller, more rustic, and personally run establishment, it is less likely to offer large-scale, publicly advertised promotions in the same way larger commercial campgrounds might. However, this does not mean there aren't opportunities for special arrangements or value.
We recommend:
-
Direct Inquiry: The best approach for potential promotions or special offers is to contact Grace, the owner, directly. Her reputation for being "lovely" suggests she may be amenable to discussing group rates for larger parties, extended stay discounts, or even off-season specials if you call and inquire.
-
Word-of-Mouth/Repeat Visitor Perks: Sometimes, loyalty or referrals can be rewarded in a more personal setting. If you’ve stayed before and had a positive experience, mentioning your past visit might lead to a pleasant surprise upon re-booking.
-
Seasonal Rates: Like many campgrounds, rates may vary slightly depending on the season, with potential for lower prices during the off-peak or cooler months, offering a peaceful retreat when the crowds are smaller.
Always remember that with a more intimate operation like JR Campground, a direct conversation is often the most effective way to learn about any special considerations for your booking.

The "feeling of freedom" and mutual respect among campers also resonates deeply, allowing you to create your own experience whether you prefer quiet solitude or a relaxed communal vibe.
While it’s not a luxury resort – with the "single porta potty" and the "little creek" crossing being part of its rustic charm – JR Campground provides an authentic camping adventure that strikes a unique balance, appealing to those who desire a true connection with nature without entirely "roughing it." If you’re a Virginian looking for a place to truly unplug, build a campfire under the stars, and experience genuine hospitality by the river, JR Campground is a must-visit destination that you’ll undoubtedly want to return to, just like its many satisfied customers.
Customer Reviews
Wonderful experience! Highly recommend this campground. The owner, Grace, is the most lovely lady and the couple that brought out firewood to us were super friendly as well. They even drove all the way down to our campsite after it got dark to check if we were doing okay. Beautiful setting and the ground was comfy and lush. We went in November so no real bug issues although some gnats during the day. I suspect it might be buggier in the summer since it’s right next to the river. Porta potty on site was fine.
Pros: grace, the owner! She's so great. Being on the water was beautiful. There was a feeling of freedom, but also an overall respect between all the campers. People had music on and stayed up late, but no one was loud or disrespectful. You just kinda make your own area. Cons: be ready to drive through a little creek. Little/nice cars might struggle. The single porta potty was really gross by Sunday morning. If you're down for something between roughing it and a nice campground with amenities, stay here! We'll be back.
Great place for what I'd call "car camping". Wood is available (for a premium but beats hauling your own) and a small rock ring fire pit. The rest is up to you. Next to the river is nice or the small creek you have to ford to get there offers a nice sound to put you to sleep. Took my 7 year old for their first camping trip and they asked if we could go back next weekend!
Pros: Beautiful spot where the Shenandoah River meets Jeremy’s Run. Dark skies and amazing stargazing when the sky is clear. Grace and her camp hosts are friendly and helpful. $25 for a large pile of firewood. Grounds are clean. Cons: camping spots are not delineated and we felt pretty crowded when it got busy. You have to drive across Jeremy’s Run to get to the camping area - be aware if you are traveling in a small car! There are only a few picnic tables throughout the property. $30/car feels a little expensive for no flush toilets, no potable water, and no guarantee of a table. Not the property’s fault, but the folks camping on the other side of the river blasted their music until 3am each night, and again at 5:30am at top volume as a “wake-up” call to their group. The excessive noise really ruined an otherwise idyllic setting.
My wife and I were taking a overnight backpacking trip up in the Shenandoah national Park. We wanted to spend one night at a car campground before starting the morning hike. We called Miss Grace a few days before taking the trip to reserve our spot. The campground was extremely clean, quiet, family friendly to include your puppy children, and very spacious. Perched right along the Shenandoah River, there were spots where you could put in your kayak, canoe, or just walk and wade in the river. Clean Porta Johns, firewood available. Fire pits for making your campfire and Smore‘s. I would definitely recommend and stay here again in the future.
