For Michiganders seeking a genuine escape into the tranquility of the state’s natural landscapes, Shoepac Lake State Forest Campground in Onaway, MI, offers a classic, rustic camping experience. This campground embodies the timeless appeal of Michigan's state forests, providing a serene lakeside setting perfect for families and individuals looking to unwind and reconnect with the outdoors. It's a place where simplicity reigns, allowing the beauty of nature to take center stage, away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
Shoepac Lake State Forest Campground holds a special place in the hearts of many, evoking nostalgic memories of simpler times. As one heartwarming review recounts, "In the late 50’s and early 60’s my family would go here and stay for two or three weeks at a time. My dad and uncle would fish for bullheads all night then clean and cook them up. We stayed in tents... Wonderful times." This sentiment highlights the enduring charm of the campground as a spot for creating cherished family traditions centered around fishing, outdoor cooking, and the joy of shared experiences in nature. It's a testament to the campground's ability to foster deep connections to the Michigan outdoors across generations.
While providing a basic, unmodernized camping experience, Shoepac Lake offers the quintessential elements of a peaceful lakeside retreat: direct access to water for fishing and paddling, and a quiet environment where the sounds of nature prevail. Although one review noted that the "sinkhole pathway" might not reveal dramatic sinkholes, the overall experience of exploring the surrounding natural areas and enjoying the lake remains a key draw. For Michigan residents who appreciate the rugged beauty of state forest camping and the timeless joy of fishing, campfires, and lakeside living, Shoepac Lake State Forest Campground promises a truly restorative and authentic outdoor adventure.
Shoepac Lake State Forest Campground is located at 12414-12550 Shoepac Lake Rd, Onaway, MI 49765, USA. This placement in Northern Michigan puts it within the picturesque landscapes of Presque Isle County, offering a truly remote and natural setting. Onaway, a small city, serves as a gateway to this beautiful region, known for its forests, lakes, and unique geological features.
The campground's accessibility is characteristic of a state forest site. It's situated on Shoepac Lake Road, which, being a state forest road, may involve unpaved or less maintained sections, especially as you get closer to the campground. Visitors should anticipate a drive that allows them to truly "get away from it all," often encountering gravel or dirt roads that contribute to the remote feel. This type of access is common for those seeking a more rustic camping experience in Michigan's expansive public lands.
Despite its secluded nature, the campground's location in Onaway provides a convenient base for exploring other nearby natural attractions. It's close enough to larger lakes like Black Lake, offering additional opportunities for boating and fishing, and various state trails for hiking or ATV riding. While the drive in reinforces the sense of wilderness, the eventual arrival at the peaceful lakeside campsites makes the journey worthwhile. This balance of remote tranquility and regional accessibility makes Shoepac Lake State Forest Campground a suitable destination for Michiganders looking for a genuine outdoor escape without being completely cut off from broader regional exploration.
Shoepac Lake State Forest Campground, typical of a Michigan State Forest Campground, provides essential services for a rustic and authentic camping experience. The focus is on embracing nature with basic amenities, rather than offering extensive modern conveniences.
Visitors should be prepared for an "off-grid" experience, bringing all necessary supplies and being self-reliant, as there are no on-site stores or staff beyond periodic MDNR patrols. Cell service may also be limited in this remote area.
Shoepac Lake State Forest Campground, while rustic, offers several compelling features and highlights that draw Michiganders seeking a traditional and serene outdoor experience.
As a Michigan State Forest Campground managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), Shoepac Lake State Forest Campground adheres to a standardized fee structure and typically does not offer individual "promotions or special offers" in the manner of private campgrounds.
However, the inherent value for Michigan residents stems from the MDNR's system of providing affordable and accessible outdoor recreation:
For the most accurate and up-to-date information on camping fees, Recreation Passport requirements, and any specific alerts (such as road conditions or temporary closures), Michigan residents should always consult the official Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) website or contact the DNR's Northern Lower Peninsula Customer Service Center at (989) 785-4251.
For Michigan residents, Shoepac Lake State Forest Campground in Onaway offers an ideal and quintessential Michigan outdoor experience, perfectly suited for those seeking a serene, rustic, and authentic retreat. Its location in Northern Michigan makes it a manageable drive for many across the state, allowing for a true escape into the wilderness without overly extensive travel. This accessibility means more time enjoying the peaceful lakeside setting and less time on the road.
The campground’s inherent rustic nature, with basic amenities and a focus on self-reliance, appeals directly to a segment of Michigan campers who value simplicity and a deeper connection to nature. It harkens back to traditional camping experiences, as warmly recalled by long-time visitors, fostering an environment where new family memories can be made, much like generations past. The quiet, undeveloped setting offers a stark contrast to urban life, providing a much-needed respite and an opportunity to truly disconnect.
Furthermore, the direct access to Shoepac Lake and its reputation for good fishing are significant draws for locals who cherish Michigan’s abundant inland water resources. The ability to simply walk to the lake and cast a line, or launch a canoe for a peaceful paddle, embodies the recreational spirit of the state. The unique "sinkhole pathway" adds an intriguing element of exploration, showcasing Michigan’s distinctive geological features.
Finally, the affordability of state forest camping, especially when paired with the Michigan Recreation Passport, makes Shoepac Lake a highly economical choice for regular outdoor adventures. It allows Michigan residents to fully embrace the beauty of their state's natural heritage without breaking the bank. For those yearning for a quiet, back-to-basics camping trip focused on fishing, nature, and creating lasting memories in a truly tranquil Northern Michigan setting, Shoepac Lake State Forest Campground is an excellent and highly suitable destination.

In the late 50’s and early 60’s my family would go here and stay for two or three weeks at a time. My dad and uncle would fish for bullheads all night then clean and cook them up. We stayed in tents, there were at least six kids with mom and dad. Wonderful times. Need to see it all again and soon as I am now almost 73 y/o!
Apr 06, 2025 · Hamilton MorrisonThis is a review/photos of the sinkhole pathway. You really can’t see sinkholes. It just looks like a deep valley.
Oct 17, 2024 · lisa haaseBeen camping, hiking, fishing at shoepac and the surrounding tomahawk Lake & Flooding since 1986. It’s always been special place to my family and friends, a wonderful place for well trained dogs. Fishing is good for lower mi, I’ve landed some pretty decent sized pike, bass and even a couple trout, they used to stock the trout, but the fishermen in the area weren’t happy about that because it changed the fishing rules for the lake so they transplanted pike caught in the flooding to shoepac, negating the trout and eventually the DNR gave up, Northern Michigan fishing lore I’m sure… we have a lifetime of stories about our times at shoepac lake.
