For those of us here in Michigan, the call of the wild is a familiar tune, and there’s nothing quite like escaping to a serene campground to truly unwind. If you’re yearning for a genuine, rustic camping experience, Tomahawk Lake State Forest Campground in Onaway, MI, offers an idyllic retreat. Nestled on the tranquil shores of Tomahawk Lake, this campground is a perfect spot for Michiganders looking to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature’s simple pleasures. It’s a place where the sounds of loons on the water and the crackle of a campfire define your evenings, and the clear Northern Michigan air invigorates your days.
Tomahawk Lake State Forest Campground embodies the quintessential Michigan camping experience, offering a back-to-basics approach that many modern, amenity-rich campgrounds simply can't replicate. It’s ideal for tent campers and those with smaller trailers who appreciate the solitude and natural beauty of a state forest setting. The campground is known for its spacious sites, some of which even provide direct access to the lake – a true treat for water enthusiasts. Whether you’re an avid angler, a keen paddler, or simply someone who enjoys the peace and quiet of the outdoors, Tomahawk Lake State Forest Campground provides a fantastic base for exploring the natural wonders of Presque Isle County. Many locals return year after year, drawn by the beautiful area, the well-maintained facilities, and the friendly, inviting atmosphere.
Tomahawk Lake State Forest Campground is situated in a beautiful, somewhat secluded part of Northern Michigan, yet it remains relatively accessible for campers across the state. You’ll find it at Shoepac Lake Rd, Onaway, MI 49765, USA. Specifically, the campground is located approximately 13 miles southeast of Onaway via M-33 South and Tomahawk Lake Highway. This positioning allows for a peaceful camping experience away from the immediate bustle of towns, while still being within a reasonable driving distance for supplies or local exploration in Onaway.
The campground’s proximity to Tomahawk Lake is a major draw, offering campers direct access to the water for various activities. While it maintains a rustic feel, the access roads are generally well-maintained, allowing for easy navigation with both vehicles and trailers. The surrounding state forest land also means that the campground is often a gateway to extensive state forest roads and trails, providing opportunities for ORV riding, hiking, and other outdoor pursuits. This blend of natural isolation and convenient access makes Tomahawk Lake State Forest Campground a prime destination for Michigan outdoor enthusiasts seeking a genuine wilderness experience without being entirely cut off.
As a Michigan State Forest Campground managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Tomahawk Lake State Forest Campground operates under a standard fee structure rather than offering traditional "promotions" or special discounts often seen at private campgrounds. To camp here, visitors are required to have a Michigan Recreation Passport in addition to the nightly campsite fee. The Recreation Passport provides annual access to all Michigan state parks, recreation areas, and state forest campgrounds, making it an excellent value for those who frequently enjoy Michigan's outdoor spaces. It can be purchased when renewing your license plate or at any state park or DNR customer service center. The nightly camping fee is typically a set amount, often around $20, but it is always recommended to verify the most current rates and any specific guidelines on the Michigan DNR website or by contacting the campground directly via the provided phone number. While there aren't short-term promotions, the consistent affordability and unparalleled natural experience offered by a Michigan State Forest Campground are a continuous "special offer" for residents seeking quality outdoor recreation.

May 29, 2025 · Jesse SShhh. Don't tell everybody what a gem this place is. Secluded and a bit off the beaten path, most of the campsites face the lake. It also has a beach, which not many State campgrounds can offer. Bonus! There's also a hidden swimmin' hole with a sandy bottom and tiny beach if you wanna go skinny dipping :)!
Sep 17, 2021 · Mark WasiakSome very nice sites on the lake. Bathrooms are very clean. Never very crowded.
Sep 06, 2019 · JKU VenturesGreat campground on the shore of Tomahawk lake. Sites are decent sized and many are right on the lake. We bring our kayaks and paddle right from our site. I haven't tried fishing there yet, but we've seen numerous cases of fish rising in the evening. This campground is also ORV friendly with access to many many miles of ORV trails, routes and county (gravel) roads.
