Elk Hill Equestrian State Forest Campground and Trail Camp is located in Vanderbilt, MI 49795, USA. This location places it squarely in the heart of Northern Michigan's extensive state forest lands, making it a prime destination for those seeking a genuine wilderness experience. Vanderbilt itself is a small, charming village, serving as a gateway to the vast natural beauty of the region.
Access to the campground is primarily via Sturgeon Valley Road. While one reviewer mentioned that the drive down Sturgeon Valley Road can be "kind of rough," they also noted that "the dirt road portion was well kept." This suggests that while the approach might require a bit of attention, the direct route to the campground is maintained to facilitate travel. It's important for visitors to be aware that the drive might involve unpaved sections, which is typical for state forest campgrounds designed to offer a more rustic and secluded experience. This characteristic contributes to the feeling of getting away from it all, truly immersing visitors in the natural environment.
Despite its secluded feel, the campground's location in Vanderbilt means it's within a reasonable driving distance for many Michigan residents. It offers a convenient escape for those looking to disconnect from urban life and reconnect with nature without venturing too far from populated areas. The accessibility via a maintained dirt road ensures that even larger vehicles and trailers, especially those transporting horses, can reach the campground, albeit with some careful navigation. This balance of remote tranquility and manageable access makes Elk Hill an excellent choice for a dedicated outdoor adventure in Northern Michigan.
Elk Hill Equestrian State Forest Campground and Trail Camp provides a more rustic and self-sufficient camping experience, aligning with its state forest designation. While amenities are simpler compared to private campgrounds, they are designed to support a comfortable outdoor stay, especially for equestrian users.
It is important for visitors to note that state forest campgrounds typically do not offer amenities like showers, flush toilets, or electrical hookups at individual sites, reflecting their rustic character. Campers should be prepared for a more traditional, self-sufficient camping experience.
Elk Hill Equestrian State Forest Campground and Trail Camp offers several distinct features that make it a highly attractive destination for specific types of outdoor enthusiasts in Michigan.
As a Michigan State Forest Campground, Elk Hill Equestrian State Forest Campground and Trail Camp typically operates under the standardized pricing structure set by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR). Therefore, it generally does not offer individual "promotions or special offers" in the way a private campground might.
However, the value proposition for campers, particularly Michigan residents, comes from the affordability of state forest camping and the specific permit requirements:
To get the most accurate and current information on camping fees and Recreation Passport requirements, Michigan residents should refer to the official Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) website or contact the campground directly using the provided phone number. While there might not be "deals," the overall structure of state forest camping offers excellent value for continuous outdoor access.

The very essence of Elk Hill—a state forest campground with an equestrian focus—resonates deeply with Michigan's strong outdoor culture. Many Michiganders cherish the opportunity to explore vast natural spaces, whether on foot, by bike, or on horseback. The "well kept" and "well marked trails" are a significant advantage, providing a safe and enjoyable environment for both seasoned riders and hikers. The presence of these extensive trail systems means that every visit can offer a new adventure, encouraging repeat trips for locals who appreciate diverse outdoor activities.
Furthermore, the rustic nature of the campground, with its emphasis on basic amenities like vault toilets and hand-pumped water, appeals to Michigan residents who seek an authentic, "unplugged" camping experience. It’s a chance to truly disconnect from digital distractions and reconnect with nature and one another around a campfire. The potential for elk viewing adds an exciting element, tapping into Michigan’s rich wildlife heritage and offering a unique local highlight.

Sep 17, 2021 · Susan EatonNice trails and access to the river. The drive down Stuegeon Valley Road is kind of rough but the dirt road portion was well kept. Thankfully I was with friends that had experience with their trail system because I would have been lost. Overall it was a fun overnight camping experience and I would go again.
Aug 04, 2019 · Hannah MayI just went to visit some family that was calling that way. Seemed to have a pretty nice setup, pretty far off the main road. Nice fire rings and tie up areas for horses. Was impressed there was a handicap ramp to ease getting on/off of the horses. Nice wide ramp leading down to the river nearby, to water and cool down.
