As a Michigan State Forest Campground, Elk Hill Equestrian State Forest Campground and Trail Camp typically operates under the standardized pricing structure set by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR). Therefore, it generally does not offer individual "promotions or special offers" in the way a private campground might.
However, the value proposition for campers, particularly Michigan residents, comes from the affordability of state forest camping and the specific permit requirements:
- Recreation Passport Requirement: All vehicles entering Michigan State Parks and Recreation Areas, and by extension, utilizing State Forest Campgrounds, are required to have a Michigan Recreation Passport. This passport, which can be purchased annually with your license plate renewal or at any state park/campground entrance, provides year-round access to all state parks, state forest campgrounds, and boat launches. For Michigan residents, this is often the most cost-effective way to access numerous outdoor recreation sites throughout the state.
- Affordable Overnight Camping Fees: State Forest Campgrounds typically have lower nightly rates compared to private campgrounds, reflecting their more rustic amenities. These rates are consistent across the MDNR system, providing predictable and budget-friendly camping options.
- Equestrian Tag Requirement: For those utilizing the equestrian trails, an annual Recreation Passport equestrian tag is also required. This ensures the ongoing maintenance of the horse trails.
To get the most accurate and current information on camping fees and Recreation Passport requirements, Michigan residents should refer to the official Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) website or contact the campground directly using the provided phone number. While there might not be "deals," the overall structure of state forest camping offers excellent value for continuous outdoor access.

Customer Reviews
This is a fantastic place to ride. The trails are well kept and it is beautiful in the woods. There are alot of well marked trails. We didn't see any Elk but plan on returning again. This is a definite must ride camp!
Nice trails and access to the river. The drive down Stuegeon Valley Road is kind of rough but the dirt road portion was well kept. Thankfully I was with friends that had experience with their trail system because I would have been lost. Overall it was a fun overnight camping experience and I would go again.
I just went to visit some family that was calling that way. Seemed to have a pretty nice setup, pretty far off the main road. Nice fire rings and tie up areas for horses. Was impressed there was a handicap ramp to ease getting on/off of the horses. Nice wide ramp leading down to the river nearby, to water and cool down.
