Introduction / Overview
For Minnesota locals who appreciate the tranquility of the Northwoods and the unmatched fishing of the state’s largest lakes, North Star Resort of Leech Lake in Federal Dam, MN, offers a compelling retreat. Located on the far northeastern edge of the legendary Leech Lake, this destination has evolved over the years, now primarily serving as a dedicated RV camp community. It is a place where family histories are made, where the call of the loon is a daily soundtrack, and where the focus is firmly set on the timeless tradition of Minnesota fishing.
North Star Resort is known for its secluded setting, offering an escape from the busy, commercialized tourist areas common on other parts of Leech Lake. The history of the location speaks to its enduring appeal—it has been a treasured spot for Northwoods enthusiasts for generations. While the property has transitioned from a traditional resort with cabins to a location that heavily emphasizes seasonal and long-term RV camping, the spirit of being a dedicated fishing and wilderness base remains strong. This is a perfect fit for Minnesota users who own their recreational vehicle and are seeking a long-term, quiet summer home base right on the water.
The resort’s unique position near the Federal Damsite places it in a prime location for serious anglers. It is a community that understands the fishing lifestyle, making it highly suitable for those who prioritize casting lines, cleaning fish, and enjoying the calm, secluded bays of this expansive Cass County lake.
Location and Accessibility
North Star Resort of Leech Lake is situated at 584 Northstar Dr NE, Federal Dam, MN 56641, USA. Its location is a key defining feature, appealing specifically to those who seek genuine seclusion and quiet in their outdoor experience. Federal Dam is a small, historic town, and the resort is positioned on the remote, far northeastern side of Leech Lake, close to the actual damsite that controls the lake's outflow into the Leech Lake River.
Accessibility requires traveling into a truly wooded area of Cass County. While this means the drive is scenic and the environment is exceptionally peaceful, visitors should know that the resort is not adjacent to major retail or large city amenities like Walker or Cass Lake. The road leading to the resort, described by locals as a narrow, approximately 2.5-mile road, reinforces the feeling of getting 'Up North' and away from it all.
For local users, this remote location is a significant advantage. It ensures the waters and the surrounding natural spaces feel less congested. Anglers appreciate this seclusion, knowing they are in an area less trafficked by high-speed recreational boaters. However, visitors should plan to arrive fully provisioned, embracing the resort's status as a true wilderness retreat where the focus is on the lake and the local community, not commercial convenience.

It appears on the satellite view Google map that a boat harbor with many boat slips has been installed since the review posted 10 years ago. This resort is definitely in a secluded area of Leech Lake on the far NE side, near the Federal Damsite.
Dec 29, 2023 · Robert ChudekMy Great Grandparents, Ame and Skeet Miller owned Noth Star from about 1955 to 1967. Grandpa's brother Warren lived there for some time as well. Unfortunately, they were not Swedish. The Lake does not change and it is great for fishing. North Star has become more of an RV camp and homestead for the current owner's family. There is no Harbor for boats. If you a just imto fishing, its great. If you want to walk the beach, you can't go far. The owner's family put a barrier up so no one gan get very far. The only place to walk is the 2.5 mile narrow road.
Jun 12, 2013 · Stacy SimpsonI was fortunate to grow up going to this resort, camping for a weekend, family reunions that took over the entire grounds. Swimming, fishing, roasting marshmallows at the campfire and so much more. Wonderful place, fantastic owners/managers!!
