For generations of Minnesotans, a trip "up north" to a quality, clean, and amenity-rich campground is a cherished annual tradition. The Leech Lake Recreation Area, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE), embodies this ideal, offering a five-star camping experience situated in the heart of the majestic Chippewa National Forest. This is not a rustic, bare-bones stop; it is a meticulously maintained facility designed to provide comfort and convenience while connecting visitors directly to one of Minnesota's most renowned lakes.
Best known for its exceptional boat access to Portage Bay on Leech Lake—a legendary fishery for walleye, musky, and perch—this campground is a prime basecamp for serious anglers and families alike. The reputation for excellence is well-deserved, as noted by local visitors: "What a great campground that earns 5 stars plus in every possible way. It is extremely well maintained by a nice friendly and helpful staff." The focus here is on a superior outdoor experience, backed by reliable, clean, and modern infrastructure. From spacious sites nestled in mature trees to top-notch facilities, the Leech Lake Recreation Area is a standout choice for local residents seeking the perfect northern Minnesota retreat.
The Leech Lake Recreation Area is conveniently located at 1217 Federal Dam Dr NE, Federal Dam, MN 56641, USA. This centralized location places it right at the outlet of Leech Lake, near the historic Federal Dam, which helps control the water levels of this significant body of water—part of the Mississippi River Headwaters system.
Accessibility by vehicle is straightforward, allowing RVs, travel trailers, and car campers easy access to their sites. From major hubs, the drive is manageable for a weekend or extended trip: it's approximately 33 miles west of Grand Rapids and 35 miles east of Bemidji. Once you arrive in the charming, small town of Federal Dam, the final approach is clear, leading you into a forested, tranquil environment.
Crucially for boaters, the campground offers immediate and convenient water access to Leech Lake via a boat launch and a dedicated mooring canal. This direct link to the lake is a major draw, allowing local boat owners to transition seamlessly from road travel to water recreation. The campground’s setting within the Chippewa National Forest also means it is surrounded by a vast network of trails, including connections to sections of the Soo Line, Heartland, and North Country National Scenic Trails, providing excellent accessibility for hikers and cyclists.
The high ratings and enthusiastic reviews this park receives are largely due to the comprehensive and well-maintained services provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This is where the Leech Lake Recreation Area elevates the typical camping experience.
Beyond the standard services, the Leech Lake Recreation Area offers a range of features and highlights that ensure a memorable, engaging stay for every member of the family.

Jun 27, 2025 · Aaron SmithWhat a great campground that earns 5 stars plus in every possible way. It is extremely well maintained by a nice friendly and helpful staff. The campsites are overly generous in size and they are level with utilities that work perfectly. Antenna TV works well considering the remote location, so did our AT&T and Verizon cell reception. What more could one wish for ?
Jul 19, 2024 · Sanbonani ProductionsGreat campground. All of the sites I surveyed were level and easy to back in. The laundry room has two washers and two dryers that are available at no charge. Wow! That was nice. Most of the sites have electric only, but a few are full hookups. You can do a fresh water fill at the dump station. Speaking of the dump station: Only one camper at a time can dump. One could double back and pull up to the station, but you only have one drainage hole. This might be useful if you only needed water. You could get water while someone else was dumping. There is a lot to do in the nearby towns. A lot of the campers here had their fishing boats with them. Be sure to check out the 600+ year old tree (pictured) during your stay.
Jul 15, 2024 · Kenneth DavisI love this place. Probably one of the most well kept and beautiful campgrounds we have ever been to. All that said, I recommend you don't stay there so I don't lose my favorite spot! 😉
Aug 04, 2025 · Travis CannonWe had never stayed at an Army Corps campground before and after this last weekend's trip, I am looking for others to stay at. It was wonderful. Large well maintained sites with lots of room between the sites. Beautiful trees throughout. While not on the main part of Leech Lake, the channel and surrounding wetlands still nice and provided lovely sunsets. The bathroom facility was large and clean. The longtime camp hosts were very nice and helpful. Read a lot of reviews about the mosquito issue. We didn't experience that but we were there later in the season and it was a little windy during our time there.
