Introduction / Overview
For Minnesota adventurers who define a perfect getaway as one that is secluded, quiet, and completely free of charge, Six Mile Campground near Bena, MN, is a hidden gem. Located within the vast, natural boundaries of the Chippewa National Forest, Six Mile is technically a designated dispersed camping area rather than a traditional developed campground. This distinction is vital for local campers, as it means an escape from reservation systems and nightly fees. The atmosphere is authentically rustic and truly "back-to-basics," perfect for self-sufficient individuals or families eager to unplug and immerse themselves in the Northwoods environment. Situated directly on Six Mile Lake, the site offers a beautiful, peaceful setting—a place where the sunset over the water is the primary evening entertainment. While services are extremely limited, the reward is an unparalleled sense of solitude and the freedom of enjoying your state’s gorgeous public lands without cost. It is a first-come, first-served site that is highly valued by locals looking for an uncrowded, serene experience, especially during the shoulder seasons.
Location and Accessibility
Six Mile Campground is nestled deep within the stunning Chippewa National Forest, just outside the small community of Bena, MN 56626, USA. The exact location is along the shore of Six Mile Lake, a couple of miles down Six Mile Lake Road (Forest Service Road 2127) which branches off U.S. Highway 2, about five miles east of Bena. While the location is relatively remote, the dirt access road (Six Mile Lake Road) is generally well-maintained, making it accessible to a wide variety of vehicles, including larger RVs and trailers. However, travelers should note the need to pay close attention to directions and avoid the more primitive Old Six Mile Lake Road. Its prime location provides immediate access to the lake and the thousands of acres of forest land surrounding it, offering opportunities for silent sports and exploration right from your campsite. This seclusion is what makes it highly attractive to local users seeking an authentic wilderness experience while remaining accessible for weekend trips from various parts of Minnesota.
Services Offered
As an official Forest Service Dispersed Camping Area, the primary "service" offered at Six Mile Campground is the free use of established sites. However, campers must arrive fully prepared for a primitive experience. Based on public data and traveler reviews, the available, albeit minimal, amenities include:

Very nice secluded FREE camping sites! I imagine it gets full in the summer, but only one other camper this weekend.
Apr 20, 2025 · Bob HaggertyNo trash cans, but next to a nice lake to watch the set over. You probably won't want to use the bathroom. Be sure to check the trees around your site. There are some dead large ones ready to fall. Stayed 4/22 Tuesday and there were only two other sites taken. There is a boat launch, but the end is heaved up. No picnic tables and only rock fire rings.
Apr 23, 2025 · SteveAmazing no fee campground! Mom and I drove through here to check it out while exploring the Chippewa National Forest! We're absolutely planning on camping here in the near future 🙂🏕️
Aug 08, 2024 · Tyler DayIt's definitely one of my favorite free camps. Just five miles to Bena MN to a country covenant store and restaurants.
Aug 24, 2024 · VanCampinWoodyI had 2 ticks on me in a matter of a few minutes and the flies were insane. Sketchy looking group camped there so I left. I didn't actually use the toilet there but I could tell from the outside I would not want to use it.
