Introduction / Overview: Rustic Charm on the Winooski River
For Vermonters seeking an authentic, unvarnished outdoor experience right in the heart of the state, Onion River Campground in Plainfield offers a compelling blend of convenient accessibility and natural charm. Situated directly alongside the Winooski River, this private campground provides a classic, down-to-earth setting for both seasoned RV travelers and traditional tent campers.
The experience here is focused on the outdoors: the sound of the river, walking trails through the woods, and the simple pleasure of a quiet evening campfire. While the campground has faced the challenges of nature, including severe flooding in recent years, it continues to operate, expanding and enhancing its natural features. One loyal customer notes that "In spite of several years of unprecedented flooding they have created and expanded a lovely campground. Now with an orchard and beautiful berry bushes, flowers; a walk through the woods past the pond and up to the sacred stone circle can be done by all. We had a very peaceful respite."
It is important for local users to recognize the rustic nature of this park. As with many smaller, independent Vermont campgrounds, Onion River Campground prioritizes a natural setting, and it may not offer the polished, manicured feel of a larger resort park. While one review mentions disappointment in the park's visual presentation upon arrival, the majority of the feedback and available information highlight the reasonable rates, friendly service, and most importantly, the unmatched location for central Vermont exploration and riverside recreation.

On my list for a stop every time I come this way. Service was outstanding!
Jun 27, 2025 · Steve BowmanWe were totally shocked when we pulled up to this RV Park. We paid for two nights based on their photos on their website. We pulled up to a sand pit , it didn’t even look like an RV park. It looked like a run down trailer park. Weeds higher than us. We left to find a RV park that is as advertised.
Sep 11, 2025 · Terry KelleyDO NOT BOOK HERE. While we were not expecting a five-star location, this is much closer to a dump than anything that resembles a campground. Upon arrival, we were told that the site we had booked and paid for in advanced was taken and there were no other full hookups available. While there was an empty field with other parking, the condition of the location was poor. There was trash heaped up and a general sense the place has been let go (although, I doubt it was much to begin with). When we attempted to get our money back, they had conveniently already modified our online reservation to correct their error of giving away our reserved and paid for site. It’s definitely a shady business and a dodgy area (and that’s being kind). You also have to pass a very narrow bridge where we bottomed out our back bumper on the camper and bent it. Not to mention there is no cell service here so we had to drive elsewhere to procure lodging for the night at a more adequate and safe location for a family.
Jul 07, 2025 · Becky RoweThis place is great. It's got a great view, an orchard, and a sweet river access area. Great music, if you play an instrument, bring it with you... At Onion River CG, music is in the air.
May 14, 2025 · RG LafleurThanks Jacqueline for the excellent service. This is a simple life, small friendly camping with peace and love vibes. River access is not easy even from the beach. This looks like a work in progress project. Had to go early because of health issues and was reimbursed the night, this is rare and sets them apart for overall great service. Upon arrival, you'll see that it's a self-service entrance, it's easy, it's a one road camping, and all sites are easily accessible even if some don't have very leveled grounds.
