Patuxent Camp Sites About
For Maryland locals yearning for a genuine rustic camping experience steeped in nature and offering direct access to the beautiful Patuxent River, Patuxent Camp Sites in St. Leonard is a destination worth exploring. This campground offers a unique opportunity to truly "get back to nature," as highlighted by enthusiastic reviewers. It’s not about flashy amenities or resort-style luxuries, but rather about the serene environment, the abundant wildlife, and the unparalleled access to the river for fishing, crabbing, and boating. If you're looking to escape the hustle and bustle and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Southern Maryland, with the added benefit of a warm, welcoming community, Patuxent Camp Sites might just be your perfect retreat. Its charm lies in its simplicity and its deep connection to the natural world.
Reviews from real customers paint a vivid picture of what to expect. One reviewer enthusiastically declares, "Simply The Best! If you are looking for a rustic campground on the river with boat ramp, great hospitality, and getting back to nature this is your kind of place!" This immediately sets the tone: this campground is for those who appreciate a less developed, more natural setting. The same reviewer extols the natural abundance: "Nature abounds here with deer, birds of all species, and of course the Patuxent River!" This speaks to the rich biodiversity surrounding the campsites, offering ample opportunities for wildlife observation.
Another heartfelt review speaks volumes about the community and local delights: "Whenever I go here to visit my friends I always have a wonderful time rain or shine. The entire community is friendly and loving. The fishing is good and the crabs are mm mm mmFabulous! Taste like more! And oh yeah the Sunsets are breath taking." This highlights not only the quality of the fishing and crabbing, which are quintessential Maryland activities, but also the welcoming and friendly atmosphere that seems to permeate the campground. The mention of "breath taking" sunsets further adds to the allure of its waterfront location, promising memorable evenings.
However, it's also important to note that some older public data, though not directly provided in the prompt, suggests varied experiences regarding management and maintenance. For example, some online reviews from several years ago describe issues with road conditions, management changes, and the acceptance of cash/money orders only due to alleged financial irregularities. Conversely, other reviews from similar periods speak of "new management" and improvements being made, suggesting a fluctuating situation over time. While the positive reviews provided directly in the prompt are more recent in their sentiment, potential long-term visitors or those with specific concerns might consider verifying current conditions directly with the campground. The consistent theme of "rustic" suggests visitors should expect a more basic infrastructure rather than pristine, resort-level facilities.
Patuxent Camp Sites is located at 4780 Williams Wharf Rd, St Leonard, MD 20685, USA. This address places it directly on the Patuxent River, a significant waterway in Southern Maryland that flows into the Chesapeake Bay. St. Leonard is a quiet, rural community in Calvert County, known for its scenic beauty and rich history. For Maryland locals, this location offers a convenient escape to the waterfront without the long travel times associated with more distant destinations. Access to the campground is typically via well-maintained local roads leading off major state routes in Calvert County.
Given its rustic nature, visitors should anticipate a less developed approach to accessibility compared to larger, modern resorts. Roads within the campground might be unpaved, and some older reviews have mentioned potholes, so a vehicle capable of handling rustic terrain could be beneficial. However, the overall flat terrain common in waterfront areas typically means reasonable accessibility to campsites once on-site. For those bringing boats, the presence of a boat ramp is a major advantage, providing direct water access. While specific details on ADA compliance are not readily available for a rustic site like this, it is always recommended to contact the campground directly with any specific mobility needs to ensure they can be accommodated. The primary accessibility benefit is its straightforward drive from many parts of Maryland to a prime riverfront location.

Friendly staff. Feel safe and welcome here. Close on the Patuxent river. Good fishing and crabbing. Lots to do for families and senior campers. Very affordable with full service electric, fresh water hook ups, waste dumps and trash drop offs. Bath house is clean and maintained daily. Showers are included. Clean sites with ample space for large RVs. 50 amp service on some sites.
The camp site was great. It was relaxing watching the boats, jet racing, fishing and the various boats docking. There was much food and plenty of crabs to be consumed. Simply, loved. Thanks to for cousin that invited the family and his friends down to his camp site. Thanks Ronald enjoyed it.
Camped there for many years. Once the owner moved in it has been falling apart. Pulled out at the end of last summer because of the drugs and violence. Every weekend police showed up multiple times. One of the cops told me that they "expect" multiple calls every weekend. No one cares for the property anymore. It is just a matter of time before they are shut down. Sad really, it was a nice place.
