Pine Glen Campground focuses on providing a fundamental, back-to-nature camping experience. While it intentionally foregoes many modern amenities, it does offer essential services that support a comfortable and authentic outdoor adventure.
- Primitive Campsites: The campground offers 21 designated campsites, designed for tents and smaller RVs (larger campers might find it challenging). These sites are spaced out, providing a good degree of privacy for campers.
- Picnic Tables: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, providing a convenient surface for meal preparation, dining, or simply gathering.
- Fire Rings/Cooking Grills: Every site includes a fire ring or cooking grill, perfect for campfires, cooking over an open flame, or enjoying s'mores under the stars.
- Pit Toilets / Vault Toilets: The campground provides pit or vault toilets for sanitary facilities. It's important for campers to be aware that these are basic, non-flush toilets and, as noted in reviews, may not always be perfectly stocked or clean, reflecting the primitive nature of the site.
- Creek Access: A significant natural amenity, a creek or small river runs along the right side of the campground, offering soothing sounds and a natural water source (though not potable).
- First-Come, First-Served Basis: Campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning reservations are not typically accepted. This ensures spontaneity for campers but also advises early arrival, especially during peak seasons.
- Affordable Camping Fees: The camping fee is remarkably low at just $3 per night, making it an extremely budget-friendly option for outdoor enthusiasts.
It is crucial for potential campers to note what is not offered to ensure their preparedness:
- No Electric Hookups: There are no electrical connections available at any of the campsites.
- No Water Hookups / Potable Water: Campers must bring their own drinking water, as there are no water spigots or potable water sources within the campground.
- No Showers: There are no shower facilities available at Pine Glen Campground.
- Limited to No Cell Service: Reviews frequently mention very limited to no cell service, which is a key aspect of "getting back to nature" but requires campers to plan for being off-grid.
Pine Glen Campground stands out for its distinct features and highlights, catering to those who truly seek a rustic and immersive outdoor experience in Alabama. These attributes define its unique appeal:
- True Back-to-Nature Experience: This is the paramount highlight. Pine Glen is designed for campers who want to disconnect from modern conveniences and fully immerse themselves in the natural environment. The lack of electricity and cell service actively encourages this digital detox.
- Exceptional Affordability: At just $3 per night, Pine Glen is one of the most budget-friendly camping options in Alabama, making a genuine outdoor adventure accessible to everyone.
- Direct Access to Pinhoti Trail: A significant draw for hikers, the renowned Pinhoti Trail runs right through the campground. This provides immediate access to miles of scenic hiking for day trips or longer backpacking adventures.
- Peaceful and Quiet Atmosphere: Reviews consistently praise the campground for its tranquility. With ample space between sites and a focus on primitive camping, it offers a serene environment for relaxation and enjoyment of nature's sounds.
- Creek/Small River Access: The presence of a flowing creek or small river alongside the campground adds to the natural beauty and provides a soothing auditory backdrop. It's perfect for casual exploration or simply enjoying the peaceful sounds of water.
- Located in Choccolocco Wildlife Management Area: This makes Pine Glen an ideal base for hunters during legal hunting seasons, offering convenient access to prime hunting grounds within the Talladega National Forest.
- Easy Forestry Road Access: Despite being off the beaten path, the forestry road leading to the campground is generally well-maintained and easily navigable by most vehicles, making it surprisingly accessible for a primitive site.
As a U.S. Forest Service campground operating on a first-come, first-served basis with a consistently low fee, Pine Glen Campground typically does not offer traditional "promotions" or "special offers" in the commercial sense. Its primary "offer" is its incredible affordability and direct access to unspoiled nature.
However, it is worth noting that:
- Flat Low Rate: The $3 per night camping fee is itself a continuous special offer, providing an extremely economical option for camping in the Talladega National Forest.
- Potential for Discounted Access: While not explicitly stated for Pine Glen on all public information, some Forest Service campgrounds offer discounted rates for holders of certain federal recreation passes, such as the America the Beautiful Annual Pass (for seniors or those with disabilities). It is always advisable to inquire if such discounts apply upon arrival or by contacting the Shoal Creek Ranger District.
Because Pine Glen operates on a simple, low-cost model, its value proposition is inherent in its standard pricing and the natural experience it provides. For the best and most current information regarding fees or any occasional changes, contacting the relevant Forest Service office is recommended.

Customer Reviews
We loved our stay here. It was a quick one nighter but exactly what we needed. There is a pit toilet but no other amenities if you are wanting a shower. There is not electric or water or very much cell service at all but absolutely perfect for getting back to nature. Plenty of space between sites. A creek/small river runs by the right side of the campground. Forestry road to get there is an easy drive. Google maps will take you right to it. We will be going back soon.
Cheap. Lots of day hikers come through. Pit toilets provided but not stocked or too clean, and doors don't really close. No real privacy. But still a decent, really cheap campsite.
Really enjoyed camping and can't wait to return! Pricing is inexpensive, very quiet and peaceful Even when campgrounds are on the full side.
We were there it's a pretty campground, nice people, lots of walking trails. We loved it! This time our car battery died, someone notified the Rangers & they helped us right away!! Nice guys Thanx guys. The "B" Hive
Struck out on a whim not know where to go. Found this on the map. It's pretty remote in the National forest gravel road access. First come first serve but had our pick. Nice flat grounds. Our site had a picnic table, tent area, fire ring with a creek about 50 yards away. $3/nt to stay. Latrine style toilets were not pleasant smelling but I expected that. No cell service, no water or showers. Nice remote area to eplore by vehicle, hike the Pinhoti trail, explore some very remote fishing lakes nearby.
