Pine Grove Campground About
For Virginians seeking a tranquil and natural escape to the charming coastal town of Chincoteague, Pine Grove Campground offers a unique proposition. Nestled amidst beautiful trees, this campground is known for its quiet ambiance and a setting that feels safe and serene for families, particularly those with young children. While the Chincoteague area is generally known for its vibrant and celebratory beach town atmosphere, Pine Grove provides a more subdued and peaceful base from which to explore all that this beloved Virginia destination has to offer.
Pine Grove Campground aims to provide a relaxed camping experience, focusing on the natural beauty of its surroundings rather than extensive, high-energy amenities. It's a place where the sounds of nature, rather than bustling crowds, define your stay. As one visitor noted, "Quiet, under beautiful trees, and not a lot of cars going by which makes it safer for children." This highlights the campground's core appeal for those prioritizing peace and a secure environment for their family.
However, it's important to approach Pine Grove with a clear understanding of its current status, particularly regarding pet policies, as recent reviews have raised concerns about dog waste management. While the natural setting and tranquility are praised, issues with uncleaned dog waste have been noted as a significant detractor. Despite this, the inherent positives—the quiet, the shade from the trees, the safety for children due to less traffic, and the presence of a "nice pool in the summer"—still make it a potentially appealing option for many. This article will provide a factual overview of Pine Grove Campground, helping local Virginians determine if it aligns with their ideal camping experience on Chincoteague Island.
Pine Grove Campground is conveniently located at 5283 Deep Hole Rd, Chincoteague, VA 23336, USA. This address places it on Chincoteague Island, a celebrated coastal gem on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Chincoteague Island is widely known for its pristine beaches, the famous wild ponies of Assateague Island, and a charming, quaint town atmosphere.
The campground's location on Deep Hole Road offers a distinct advantage: it provides a sense of quiet seclusion while still being highly accessible to the island's main attractions. Unlike some areas that might experience heavy vehicle traffic, Pine Grove is praised for "not a lot of cars going by," contributing to its peaceful environment and making it "safer for children." This means campers can easily reach the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, home to the wild ponies and pristine beaches of Assateague Island, within a short drive or even a bike ride. The refuge entrance is typically just a few miles away.
Additionally, the quaint downtown area of Chincoteague, with its unique shops, seafood restaurants, and maritime museum, is also easily accessible from the campground. This convenient access allows campers to enjoy both the natural beauty of the island and the local charm of the town. For Virginians, reaching Chincoteague Island typically involves a scenic drive along US-13 (Coastal Highway) to Route 175, which leads directly onto the island. The accessibility, combined with the campground's quiet setting, positions Pine Grove as a practical base for exploring this beloved Virginia destination.

Customer Reviews
Management and/or owners are not hospitable nor are they professional. In a small, quaint, and generally jubilant beach town this campground falls very short in hospitality and professionalism.
Not sure what is happening. They used to be strict with dogs, but lately, a large dog has been using the middle of our campsite - 3 times in less than 2 months - and the owners have stopped cleaning up after their dogs. I see dog waste everywhere and it stinks horribly. There needs to be a section that is dogs only and not allow them near non-dog owner sites. We have a small child and this is just not safe. If it weren’t for that, it’s perfect. Quiet, under beautiful trees, and not a lot of cars going by which makes it safer for children. Pool is nice in the summer. I pray they handle the out of control dog owners.
Off season experience was perfect. Private and quiet tent site in what felt was a wildlife refuge. The tent sites face water. You can hear so many different species of birds morning to night. Burn rings available for campfires. If you arrive later just pay the next day. The owner was absolutely lovely. This is camping so be prepared for mosquitoes and ticks. There are bathhouses with showers and a play set for children. No shortage of picnic tables. $45/night plus tax for basic setup. Cannot wait to come back!
Have been coming here for years. The campground remains basically the same, however it seems to have more permanent 5th wheel campers in the front of the property, pull up campers in the middle and then plenty of open spots for tents and small campers in the back. They no longer take reservations so it’s a first come first served basis. There will never be an issue of needing spots bc there is plenty of room. It includes two bathhouses, places to wash dishes and a washer/dryer. The pool is nice and clean and is surrounded by caged specialized birds for enjoyment. It’s rarely used so it continues to be a nice option before/after or instead of the beach. It’s a 10 minute drive or 30 minute bike ride to the beach. There are plenty of super tall pine trees and Loblolly pines and crape Myrtle’s to pitch your tents between. The tent only area is nestled up along a large pond/swamp that is home to many birds, geese and a “wildish” family of alpacas. You can wake up to an alpaca starring you down. There are water and electric sites available and all are very affordable. Each come with a picnic table and fire ring. While the owners are still the same, they have new employees working the front desk & managing the grounds. All are very nice and helpful. The campsite & island do get sprayed for bug as the mosquitoes are the kings & queens of the campground. As soon as you exit your tent, camper or car- spray yourself! Still my favorite campground on the island. Always recommend.
Quiet park....sites are tight in general. We got a nice spacious site beside the pool. We stayed off season. Ponds and hobby farm to walk and explore. I enjoyed farm feeding times with lots of animals and birds. Internet at office area only. $70 per night. Friendly office staff and handy to walk or drive to main town.
