Pinewoods Lake Recreation Area focuses on providing a clean, quiet, and fundamental camping experience. While it doesn't offer extensive amenities like full hookups, it excels in maintaining the core necessities for a comfortable outdoor stay. Here’s what you can expect:
Paved Campsites: The campground features 15 paved sites, each designed to accommodate various camping setups, from tents to RVs. These paved pads ensure a level and clean area for your setup, regardless of weather conditions. Some sites are double-width, providing extra space.
Picnic Tables: Every campsite comes equipped with a sturdy picnic table, perfect for outdoor dining, playing board games, or simply enjoying the view.
Fire Rings: Each site includes a designated fire ring with a grate, ideal for campfires, cooking, and enjoying s'mores under the stars. Visitors often note the abundance of free firewood left from tree maintenance, making it easy to build a cozy fire.
Vault Toilets: Clean and well-maintained vault toilets (outhouse-style bathrooms) are available within the campground and at the day-use/boat launch area. While there are no showers on-site, a truck stop with clean shower facilities is conveniently located about five minutes away.
Pet-Friendly: Pinewoods Lake Recreation Area welcomes pets, provided they remain on a leash. This makes it an excellent choice for those who enjoy bringing their furry companions along on their camping trips.
Lake Access: The recreation area offers easy access to Pinewoods Lake for fishing (with a valid state fishing license) and non-motorized boating (electric motors only). There’s a primitive boat ramp and a floating fishing pier available for use.
Day-Use Area: A dedicated day-use area with picnic shelters and large grills is available, suitable for larger gatherings. The main pavilion can accommodate up to 75 people, though it's advised to check current reservation policies.
No Water or Electric Hookups: It's important to note that the campground does not offer water or electric hookups at the campsites. Campers should come prepared with their own water supply. There is also no dump station on-site.
No Trash Collection: Following the "pack it in, pack it out" principle, there are generally no dumpsters for trash within the campground. Visitors are responsible for taking all their garbage with them.
Pinewoods Lake Recreation Area distinguishes itself with several key features that enhance the rustic camping experience for local Missourians:
Scenic Pinewoods Lake: The centerpiece of the recreation area is the beautiful 31-acre Pinewoods Lake. Its calm, clear waters are perfect for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing, offering a serene backdrop for your stay. The lake provides stunning views, especially from lakeside campsites.
Paved Walking Trail: A highlight for many visitors is the 1.3-mile paved trail that circles the lake. This relatively flat trail is ideal for leisurely strolls, brisk walks, or a quick jog. Portions of the trail are even accessible, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the natural beauty. It’s perfect for taking in the lake views, spotting local wildlife, and enjoying wildflowers during the appropriate seasons. Some parts of the trail are prone to seasonal flooding, so it's good to be aware of conditions.
Quiet and Peaceful Atmosphere: Many visitors consistently praise the campground for its tranquil and quiet environment. It’s a place where you can truly escape the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy the sounds of nature. The campsites are often well-spaced, contributing to a sense of privacy.
Abundant Wildlife: The area is rich in local flora and fauna. Hikers on the lake trail often spot songbirds, deer, small mammals, and even beaver activity. For wildlife enthusiasts, it’s a rewarding experience to observe these creatures in their natural habitat.
Lantern Poles at Sites: A thoughtful addition to the campsites is the inclusion of a pole for hanging a lantern, adding convenience for evening lighting and ambiance.
Natural Firewood Supply: Campers often find an ample supply of fallen branches and cut logs from forest maintenance, which can be used for campfires, reducing the need to bring your own firewood.
As a public recreation area managed by the Mark Twain National Forest, Pinewoods Lake Recreation Area typically operates on a standardized fee structure, which has recently been implemented. Previously a free campsite, there is now a nominal fee of $15 per night for standard sites and $25 for double sites. While specific promotions or seasonal discounts directly from Pinewoods Lake Recreation Area itself are not regularly advertised, visitors should be aware of potential passes or programs that may offer reduced rates at national forest campgrounds:
America the Beautiful – The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass: This series of annual and lifetime passes covers entrance fees and standard amenity fees for federal recreation sites. While not specific to Pinewoods Lake, owning such a pass (especially the Senior Pass for those aged 62 and above) can often provide discounts on camping fees at various federal campgrounds, including those within National Forests.
Senior Pass Discounts: Holders of the America the Beautiful Senior Pass often receive a 50% discount on camping fees at federal campgrounds, including Pinewoods Lake Recreation Area. This is a significant benefit for older campers in Missouri.
Accessibility Passes: Similarly, an Access Pass for individuals with permanent disabilities may also provide discounts on camping fees.
It’s always a good idea for campers to check the official Mark Twain National Forest website or call the ranger district office (contact information below) for the most current information regarding fees and any available discounts before planning their trip. While Pinewoods Lake might not have flash sales, these federal passes can offer substantial savings for eligible individuals, making camping even more affordable for local Missouri residents.

Customer Reviews
Really nice little campground. No sewer, water, or electric but clean and quiet. I will definitely camp here again when in the area. Outhouse type bathrooms which were clean. No showers, but there is a truck stop about 5 minutes away with clean shower facilities. Pet friendly but must remain on leash.
This is a great site. There are 15 paved sites, each with a picnic table, fire ring and a pole to hang a lantern. There are two vault toilets, one in the campground and the other and the day use/boat launch site. There is a paved trail along the lake. No water, dumpsters or dump site. Pack it in and pack it out. The only negative is there are a LOT of ticks! Luckily they're easy to spot on my white dog but I have to do a tick check EVERY time he goes outside. Avoid the vegetation and you'll see a lot less. Make sure you tick-check yourself.
Great recreation area. Lake, trail, picnic tables, pavilion (reservations available), campground with ring tables. Non flush bathrooms. Great stop on my way. So pretty and trail around the lake.
Not a bad place to camp by! I went in the off season (February) and was one of two tents there. There are around 15 sites available. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring.
2nd time camping here & it’s really lovely, quiet & safe. Nice walk around the lake, standard vault toilets, dumpster, mostly shaded. Water spigots don’t work. There’s a cool pier & boat launch. Looks like they’ve had to start charging fees now: $15/night, half off with the Senior pass. It’s worth it.
