Prairie Lake Campground, as a City of Holton property, focuses on providing essential services that facilitate a comfortable and enjoyable camping experience centered around the lake. While it offers a more rustic experience than some fully-serviced private campgrounds, it provides key amenities that cater to the needs of most campers.
Campsites with Electricity: Available at a very affordable rate ($10 per night), these sites offer convenient power hookups for RVs and other camping units.
Campsites without Electricity (Primitive): For those who prefer a more traditional camping experience, non-electric sites are available at an even lower rate ($8 per night), ideal for tent camping.
Designated Swimming Area with Beach: The lake features a specific area designated for swimming, complete with a beach, providing a safe and enjoyable spot for cooling off during warmer months.
Fishing Access: Fishing is explicitly allowed on Prairie Lake, offering opportunities to catch local species (though specific types of fish are best confirmed with Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks regulations for the lake). Campers must comply with all state fishing regulations.
Boating Access (No-Wake Only): Boating is permitted on the lake, with the important stipulation that all motorized boats must operate at "idle speed only" (no wake). This ensures a calm environment for all water activities, including kayaking and canoeing, and must be legal with the state of Kansas.
Water Access at Gate: Non-drinking water is available at the gate, specifically marked "just for grey water," useful for rinsing, cleaning, or other non-potable needs.
Caretaker Assistance: Kyle Claycamp, the lake caretaker, is actively involved in ensuring a smooth experience. He is available to collect fees and answer questions, even advising campers to "go on in & get set up" if he's not immediately present.
Picnic Areas: The park offers opportunities for picnicking, with general park rules stating that picnic areas should be left in a neat and sanitary condition.
Fire Rings: Campfires are allowed in designated fire rings, allowing for classic camping evenings under the stars (fires should not be left unattended).
It is important to note that, as per reviews, showers are not available at this campground, which is a consideration for campers.
Prairie Lake Campground in Holton, KS, offers several key features that make it a compelling choice for campers seeking a tranquil and authentic outdoor experience in Kansas:
Beautiful Calm Lake Property: The campground is set on a "nice Lake property" that is consistently described as "beautiful" and "calm." This provides a serene backdrop for all activities and a peaceful environment for relaxation.
No-Wake Lake Policy: A significant highlight is the "no boat wake idle speed only" rule for boating. This ensures the lake remains quiet and safe for all users, including those swimming, kayaking, canoeing, or fishing, enhancing the overall peaceful atmosphere. It makes the lake particularly enjoyable for paddle sports and fishing without disturbance from large wakes.
Affordable Camping Rates: With electricity sites at just $10 a night and non-electric sites at $8 a night, Prairie Lake Campground offers incredibly budget-friendly camping, making it accessible to a wide range of Kansans looking for a getaway.

Excellent Fishing Opportunities: Fishing is allowed and encouraged, appealing to anglers looking to cast a line in a quiet setting. Campers must adhere to Kansas state fishing regulations.
Simple and Relaxed Check-in: The instruction to "go on in & get set up" if the caretaker isn't immediately at the gate indicates a trust-based and relaxed approach to welcoming campers, minimizing stress upon arrival.

These highlights collectively paint a picture of a welcoming, budget-friendly, and tranquil camping destination perfect for Kansans seeking a relaxing lakeside adventure.
Prairie Lake Campground, being a City of Holton property, operates with a focus on providing affordable public access to recreation rather than extensive commercial promotions. Its primary "special offer" is its consistently low and transparent pricing, which stands out in today's camping landscape.
Highly Affordable Daily Rates: The most significant "promotion" here is the campground's incredibly budget-friendly fee structure. Sites with electricity are just $10 per night, and sites without electricity are only $8 per night. These rates make it one of the most economical camping options available in Kansas, allowing for frequent and extended stays without a significant financial burden.
Simple Payment System: While not a discount, the flexible payment system, where caretaker Kyle Claycamp will "be around to collect" if he's not at the gate, simplifies the arrival process and can be seen as a convenience for campers.
Long-Term Stay Flexibility: The City of Holton park rules state that camping units may stay for a maximum of 14 days at any one campsite, and after 14 days, the unit must be removed for a minimum of 24 hours before returning. While campsites cannot be reserved, this policy allows for relatively extended stays for those looking for a longer, affordable getaway.
Given its public ownership, Prairie Lake Campground typically does not offer seasonal discounts, loyalty programs, or military/senior discounts beyond its already low base rates. The value lies in its consistent affordability and the quality of the natural experience it provides. For the most current information on fees and any potential updates, it is always best to contact the campground directly or check the City of Holton's official website.

This place is pretty nice if u wanna have a little get away!! The family sure enjoyed the time away!
Lake was great, beautiful area, great fishing area, We caught a 3 pound channel cat, the Nazi administration wasn't to keen on our existence though, a lot like 1942. When we went for a swim at about 9:43pm they forced us out against our will and headed us towards the showers. As we exited the showers they accused us of not paying to enter the park, which we clearly did at 5:10pm and to further explain this the only place to put money was in a small unlocked black box, and after arguing the case for around 5 minutes we gave in hoping money would satisfy thier hatred of us. Marching back to the camp site we thought it was all over... then BOOM Nazis pulling up to our concentration camp site and about 20 Minutes of trying to explain that there was in fact a parking space where we had our car and that Hammocks are not tents and are also not alien technology, they emptied us of our wallets and took our tags and adresses. They might as well have had tattooed numbers on our arms and put stars on our chests to identify us for further harassment. ...also there are no attractive ladies here, if it wasn't bad enough!
Camping prices are reasonable. Some ites are offered with electric. Events are held here occasionally. Has a free swimming area and you can also fish there.
Nice smaller lake. Playground, camping, toilet, fishing offered.
