Are you a Kansas resident looking for a unique lakeside camping experience where you can enjoy the water and the open air? Hobie Beach Campground, nestled along the shores of Cheney Reservoir in Cheney, KS, offers a primitive camping opportunity that connects you directly with the beauty of one of Kansas's premier lakes. While it’s known for a more rustic approach to camping, it provides direct access to the water and a chance to truly embrace the outdoors. For many Kansans, Hobie Beach is a local spot to enjoy fishing, boating, and the simple pleasure of camping by the water.
Hobie Beach Campground is located within the expansive Cheney State Park, near Cheney, KS 67025, USA. While the specific address is given as Cheney, KS 67025, the campground is part of the larger state park system, which means it's situated directly on the picturesque Cheney Reservoir.
For Kansans, particularly those in the Wichita metropolitan area, Cheney State Park and Hobie Beach are easily accessible. Cheney is situated west of Wichita, typically a straightforward drive that makes it a convenient destination for a weekend getaway or a day trip. Major state highways provide clear routes to the park entrance, and once inside, signage will direct you to Hobie Beach. The accessibility is a significant advantage for local users, allowing for relatively quick and spontaneous trips to the lake. While the campground offers a more primitive experience, its integration within a state park ensures that you're not too far from essential services that might be available within the broader park facilities or in the nearby town of Cheney. This balance of natural escape and reasonable accessibility makes Hobie Beach a practical choice for Kansans eager to spend time on or by the water.
Hobie Beach Campground primarily offers primitive camping, meaning fewer direct amenities at each site compared to full-service RV parks. However, as part of Cheney State Park, campers at Hobie Beach benefit from access to broader park facilities.
- Primitive Campsites: Hobie Beach is known for its primitive camping, where you can pitch a tent or park an RV without hookups. This provides a more traditional, back-to-basics camping experience right by the lake.
- Restroom Facilities: Shared restroom facilities, including vault toilets, are available within the park, typically within a quarter-mile of Hobie Beach, to meet basic sanitation needs.
- Shower Houses: While not directly at every primitive site, shower houses with restrooms are available within Cheney State Park, often within a quarter-mile of areas like Hobie Beach, providing a welcome amenity for campers.
- Potable Water: Access to potable water is generally available within the broader state park for campers.
- Boat Ramps: Being on Cheney Reservoir, the park offers multiple boat ramps (22 launching lanes on 7 ramps throughout the park), providing easy access for boating, fishing, and other water sports.
- Swimming Beach: Hobie Beach itself is a designated swimming area, offering a sandy shoreline for enjoying the water (though visitors should be aware of conditions like blue-green algae, which can occur).
Hobie Beach Campground, while primitive in nature, offers several features and highlights that draw in campers and outdoor enthusiasts, particularly those who love water activities.
- Lakeside Access: The most significant highlight is its direct access to Cheney Reservoir, one of Kansas's largest and most popular lakes for recreation. This proximity is ideal for water sports, fishing, and enjoying lake views.
- Windsurfing Hotspot: Hobie Beach is famously considered a prime location for windsurfing due to the consistent winds, making it a unique draw for enthusiasts of this sport.
- Sandy Beach: The presence of a "pristine, soft sand" beach at Hobie Beach provides a pleasant area for swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking by the water.
- Part of Cheney State Park: Being within Cheney State Park provides access to a wider range of activities beyond just camping, including extensive hiking and biking trails, additional picnic areas, and opportunities for various water sports like kayaking, paddleboarding, and jet-skiing.
- Fishing Opportunities: Cheney Reservoir is renowned for excellent fishing, with species like Channel catfish, white bass, crappie, striped bass, wipers, and walleye, offering great opportunities for anglers.
- Relaxed, Primitive Setting: For those who prefer a less developed camping experience and enjoy the simplicity of primitive camping, Hobie Beach provides a suitable environment to disconnect and enjoy nature.
As a state park campground with a focus on primitive camping, Hobie Beach Campground typically operates under the fee structure of Kansas State Parks. Specific, short-term "promotions or special offers" are not commonly advertised directly by the campground itself, but rather through the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWP). However, there are standard pricing tiers and permits that act as ongoing offers for frequent users. For example, an annual Kansas State Park Vehicle Permit (which is $25 for a standard permit, or a daily permit for $5) can offer savings for those planning multiple visits to any state park in Kansas throughout the year. Camping fees for primitive sites are generally more affordable than utility sites. Prospective campers should check the official KDWP website or ReserveAmerica for the most current fee schedule, which includes camping rates (typically $10 per site per night for primitive sites), and any required vehicle permits. It is always wise to inquire about any potential seasonal discounts or package deals that might be available for longer stays, though these are less common for primitive sites.

Customer Reviews
It's a sad sight. It would be nice if the KDPW would let us bring our tractors out there with our campers and do work on the beaches while the waiter is way low.
People trashed my camp spot before I arrived, the bathrooms look like they haven't been cleaned in months. It's a cool lake. People in the area should cherish what they have and take care of their own backyard. The night before I was in Bull Shoals in Arkansas... those people understand what they have and treat it accordingly.
We just go out to sit and relax. My main complaint is the tall weeds, grass and treas blocking the view to the water. The big boulders in some areas make it hard to fish from.
Really nice area, but watch for ticks.
Love Hobie Beach. Level campsites, good shade good swimming area. Only complaint is the jet skiers that fly thru swimming area way too close to swimmers.
