It's a place where the focus is on a quiet, beautiful, and well-maintained environment, making it ideal for those who value serenity over extensive amenities. This article will delve into the specifics of Roan Creek Campground, including its picturesque location, the services it provides, its unique features, and ultimately, why it is a perfectly suitable destination for Tennesseans looking for their next peaceful outdoor adventure.

Location and Accessibility

Roan Creek Campground is located at 205 Morefield Rd, Butler, TN 37640, USA. Butler is a small community nestled in Johnson County, in the far northeastern part of Tennessee. This region is a part of the Appalachian Highlands, characterized by its mountainous terrain, dense forests, and numerous creeks and rivers. The campground’s specific address places it along Roan Creek, which, as reviews confirm, is a central and beloved feature of the property, contributing significantly to its peaceful atmosphere.

While providing a secluded feel, Roan Creek Campground is accessible for residents across Tennessee. The drive to Butler often involves scenic routes through mountainous landscapes. For those traveling from various parts of the state:

  • From Knoxville: Approximately a 2.5 to 3-hour drive, generally taking I-81 N and then connecting to US-321 S or similar state routes towards Johnson City and then Butler.

  • From Chattanooga: Roughly a 3.5 to 4-hour drive, typically involving I-75 N to I-81 N, and then navigating through the Tri-Cities area before heading to Butler.

  • From Nashville: A more extended journey of about 5 to 5.5 hours, usually via I-40 E to I-81 N, making it more suitable for longer stays or dedicated nature trips for those from Middle Tennessee.

  • From Johnson City/Bristol/Kingsport (Tri-Cities Area): A very convenient drive, typically within 45 minutes to 1 hour, via US-321 S or other local routes, making it an excellent local getaway.

It’s important to note, as one review mentioned, that "It’s a little intimidating pulling into the campground off of the road." This suggests that while navigable, campers, especially those with larger RVs, should approach with caution and perhaps be prepared for a slightly narrower or steeper entry. However, the reward is a beautiful and tranquil setting once inside. The nearest amenities, including restaurants and grocery stores, are located in Mountain City, approximately 15 minutes away, which provides a balance between secluded camping and convenient access to supplies.

We stayed here for four nights in November. Very small privately owned campground. Danny the owner was great! The creek was peaceful and shower facilities were cute and clean. It’s a little intimidating pulling into the campground off of the road but we managed. Nearest restaurants and grocery stores are in Mountain City 15 minutes away. Would definitely like to go back when the temperatures are not as cold. However, the beautiful leaf colors were amazing this time of year.
